yeah and it's just 1 microphone, for just 1 purpose :) It's a shotgun mic, nice for isolating sound when interviewing some one, but.... for other purposes, where you need more ambient sound, it's not a very good solution :) There are cheaper, probably just as good mics out there. You can start with ROde mics, and if a job demands better quality, just rent mics like this... Most do that with camera's also... If you just start out, there is no need for 2500USD tripods and 2500 wireless transmission :)

He showing you pro equipment. Buy it if you're a pro. That is, 1) you use it daily, or 2) you rely of it to make money and it cannot fail. 3) it is required to meet industry standards.

In my opinion, the wireless system is overkill for indie and low-budget film makers. The third best investment after the tripod and boom mic is lighting; you can't do much without enough light. Bonus investment: a good PC that can edit 4K footage smoothly and complete other tasks like graphic design, VFX, animation, audio editing, music production etc.

Grip (Tripods, Stands, Steadicam, Jibs), Audio (Microphones, Pre-Amps, Mixers, Recorders), and Storage (Yes, RAID Arrays and HDD's) are my top 3 investments. Glass and cameras are easily interchangeable based on job, but quality Grip, Audio, and Storage will always be helpful. All of your projects have to be stored somewhere, so that's why storage is essential for me.

I get you man! I wanted a gimbal, so I saved up, and bought a gimbal (Crane 2). And to make it work better I got: follow focus motor remote follow focus and controller monitor cables for monitor battery for monitor clamp and magic arm cold shoes for mic and I still "need" to get an audio recorder/better mic, wireless mic, and HDMI transmitter/receiver and some NDs and a Polarizer and a dummy battery for my camera so I can power it and my monitor from the same 970 battery you get the point!

Can you do a similair video, but then with some lower budget items?
@mattpjones
@mattpjones 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with lower budget items is most of them will be dated in a few years or just won't stand the test of time. All of the items he showed could theoretically work for over 10+ years if taken care of. They also could actially be brought to a professional set and wouldn't be laughed off....most budget things would be.

For the fluid head, take a look at the Manfrotto 500 series, particularly the 504HD and the 502. Not as good as the Sachtler, which is pretty much industry standard, but manfrotto makes decent heads. You can usually find kits with matched sticks, but if you don’t go that route, make sure you’re getting a 75mm bowl set up-it will save a lot of time and aggravation leveling the camera. That’s more in the 500-700 range. Cheaper than that? There’s a lot of cheap gear coming out of China these days, but ymmv. I picked up a head and legs from Neewer (on Amazon) when it was on sale for 60 bucks. So far . . . Eh. It doesn’t have a smooth start on the pan, but what do you want for $60? I’ve had it less than 6 months and I can’t speak to its durability.

@BassPlayerAvailable 5 жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest similar. Could do different price brackets too.
@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 5 жыл бұрын
Matt Jones I agree, the whole point of the video was the basic equipment where it’s long term smart to spend more money. If you spend the bucks upfront on a good head and sticks or on a good shotgun mic, you won’t need to upgrade it as you upgrade your camera system. If you can’t afford the recommended equipment, you make do, but that isn’t the point of the video. There’s thousands of videos reviewing cheaper equipment.

Best filmmaker tool that you have to keep investing in is yourself. For what I do, i like a kinda heavy but small monopod (which is extendable). Small enough to carry around. Easy, cheap and stabilisation for your hand hold shoots (2 rotational axes and vertical movement) and carrying your camera. And extended to the ground it is a normal monopod. Oh and if the monopod also has a side stick handle (don't know the name of it, but it is also on tripods for video), the length of that stabilizes the 3rd rotational ax.

Working 50/50 as a AC and DOP i just invested in a 702 OLED. Having had it for a couple months and expensed it across jobs its almost paid down already. It obv won't last as long as a tripod, but then again i think it his that wonderful balance of safe investments and investments you actually need. I could definitely have bought a nice tripod instead, but this monitor goes me both when i OP and AC, unlike a tripod that would only see half the use. Solid video!

I would definitely second on having something to allow the client view some of the work, even though I'm more of a hybrid shooter. Photographing tethered in a controlled environment, and having it for the client to view the photos on the fly ups the professionalism because they can literally see what they are paying for. Also, will you ever go over what types of production filming that you do?

I'd say one thing I couldn't live without is LED lighting and C stands. I've got a full array of Neewer panels. They're bright, lightweight, take common Sony batteries or run right off of mains voltage. They'll adjust from hot to cool white and their CRI is super high. Kinda funny you didn't think of lighting in spite of literally winding up in the dark in the first 1/3rd of the video.

Happy New Year Potato. totally agree, the client experience is HUGE. giving them the experience of being part of the whole production process and not just in it really wins a ton of points. its funny, some clients want to have the behind the scenes footage of them at a production set then the production itself. popular for their gram posts :) also, yeah the tripod is killer but a "good" one is hard to travel on planes with. so hard to compromise on gear for long distance shoots by taking cheaper tripods. anyway. love the new studio and keep that content coming in 2019!

This is nice. And true for tripods even if you are just a photographer. I still have the same tripod from 10 years ago. Still works.

I have a remark. I always put the pan and tilt tension level at 0 before storing away the tripod. This is how high end rental companies put them away as well in my experience.

It would be really cool if you could do more business related videos of you just doing a basic run down on getting started, laying a foundation, contracts/legal, estimates and treatment. that kind of stuff

This video is so valuable. I am more of an audio expert, but I can name some tools that I’ve continually used yet were purchased 30 years ago - like my pair of Schoeps MK54 Hypercardiod microphones. Your favs of of the Sennheiser shotgun, the tripod, and the wireless video are sooo good. Thanks so much!

I think my MacBook pro and final cut pro is my most useful tool. I once edited a skateboard grand opening with just my cellphone footage. It looked professional.

I want to buy a macro lens. 100mm? Or would you recommend 24-70mm or 24-105mm? I don't have 50mm nor a 24mm yet. But feel I want to have the Canon 24-70 or105mm? What do you think.. which one should I buy for my 200d. Really love your reply thanks Potato Jet!
