I absolutely love Civ V, and I've played it quite a bit. Up until I found this video I hadn't wanted to get Civ VI just because of the price of it with all DLCs, and later because I forgot it existed. You reminded me to check on the store page, entire thing DLCs and all was on sale for 50 dollars. I'm gonna have a lot of fun once it finishes installing, and hopefully start with some good strategy knowledge to boot! I owe ya for both, thanks!

You should play a game as Victoria and rush harbours in every city (with the pantheon that gives extra production toward the first district) when you combine that with the policy card, governor and free enquiry dedication you can generate insane amounts of science and gold in every city.

I started a new game today and had a great start - Playing a standard Pangaea map size as Basil, I spawned right between Yosemite to the west and the coast to the east - this meant that settling in place got me the sailing boost (and all 6 coast tiles in range of the capital had either crabs or fish), and a really decent first tile to work. It also gave me the boost for Astrology (allowing me to rush for it, as I was in Shuffle mode) and I found the Hermetic Order, allowing me to install Pingala on Turn 1... All of this allowed me to get really early swordsmen (plus a vampire) and eliminate my neighbour Alexander before he could really get started...

I wanted to put a park on either side of it instead, but coal and aluminum spawned there. Feels bad man.

27:14 Was it really worth it, tho? Just asking. I think it's better to force grow as fast as possible in small cities (when there are good titles to work). The wait for a new tec gave you +1/+1 (+2/+2 because Magnus) but also increased the value for the district and you might have worked a 2/2 title earlier (so it evens out in this regard). Not criticizing or anything, you taught me so much, but I always try to optimize :P

Why do you say there are only three possible cities to build at 13:22? There are four decent spots, if you move your most western city one tile to the right und your city close to Ethiopia one tile to the north, so you can play one more city between them. These cities would become even better actually, cause the western city would be able to build an aquaduct to the mountain, while the northern city would reach the horses even faster. Didnt watch thoe complete video yet, if you changed it, my apologies :D love your vids btw!

@samuelhakansson6680
@samuelhakansson6680 3 жыл бұрын
I don't get your early starting dilemma at all tbh. Settling where you started gives you a 2 - 2 - 1 tile to work from the start (at the lake), as well as double luxuries. But you argue you want a harbour. But why don't just plop down the harbour in the second ring? Its at most a small gold cost, and the extra sea tiles you gain will be roughly outweighed by your inland tiles (most likely the inland tiles are better, since they are good from the start even). Now you argue you could settle near the fish for the early 1 - 3 tile to work, but you don't want a harbour on the fish tile (understandable). But why not plop down the harbour in the second ring again? Are you THAT eager to gain a meager +1 gold that you wish to forego early good tiles to work? Love your content as usual, but some of your settling dilemmas I just don't understand. Hence the title felt a little bit like clickbait, since I expected a truly awful start, and your starting location is pretty nice if we just count the tiles near your settler.
@PotatoMcWhiskey
@PotatoMcWhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Yes but its not coastal on a sea map, and you need to settle coastally on a sea map to get long term value, if I had settled in place I would have been crushed this game with even less room to expand. Plopping down a harbour next to a city center gives you +2 adjacency, I require at least +3 adjacency on my harbours to build them otherwise they are not a good return on investment. Killing a fish tile for a +2 harbour is shit, and I'd never place harbours outside the first ring of a coastal city. when I know if I shift my city I'll have room to settle later. Double luxuries are bad early game usually unless you can settle on them.
@samuelhakansson6680
@samuelhakansson6680 3 жыл бұрын
@@PotatoMcWhiskey Absolutely killing a fish tile for a harbour is shit, but why do you think having a harbour with less than +3 gold is "not a good return on investment"? Gold early on is quite a weak yield, and losing +2 gold is a rather small price to pay imo for all the other benefits a harbour gives you. Personally I love harbours, but mostly because they give a combination of a trade route and allowing you to eventually work the sea tiles. Yes you lose out on 2 production later on with the shipyard but by the time you get it, 2 production less doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Would really like to hear your reasoning here. :-) Oh and I personally don't mind double luxuries, as I'm usually postponing my builders quite a bit until I get at least 2 more settlers, so having high base yield tiles to work is always nice. But that part is due to my play style and not necessarily "wrong" on your part if you prefer to chase certain eurekas. :-)
@PotatoMcWhiskey
@PotatoMcWhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
@@samuelhakansson6680 2 gold = 1 Production. Gold is one of the strongest early game yields in the game, because its transient production and there are very limited ways to earn gold. It is production you can place exactly where you want. The difference between a +4 Harbour and a +6 Harbour is 50%, but you keep both the gold and the production, so its like going from working 2x Industrialist specialists and 1x commercial specialist to 3x and 1.5x respectively. That is a very significant difference. Considering its doubled by the card its only a +1 difference, but thats 200production and 200 gold over the course of a game And you keep the fishing tile which itself is worth a lot of gold over the game.
@samuelhakansson6680
@samuelhakansson6680 3 жыл бұрын
@@PotatoMcWhiskey I'll just conclude that we have very different views on the value of early gold. Personally I don't value gold anywhere near that conversion rate (rather 3-4 to 1 prod) so the gold yield on a harbour is rather inconsequential for me and hence my question. Personally I would never sacrifice 1 production in the early game (extra production from working 2 - 2 tiles) for some potential gold that overall equates to 1 builder of the course of a game, but I can see that you view things differently. Cheers for your reply either way! :-)

There is currently a bug at play after the last update, where the AI will sometimes accept ridiculous trade proposals. Dunno if that happened here, but it happened to several people. In my last BM Teddy game on Deity, the AI refused my initial offer of 4 iron for a great work of art, but when I clicked "what would it take?" the deal switched to green and I was able to clean Peter out for 4 great works for nearly no cost until he refused to trade further with me. The same works for city deals afaik once the bug is triggered, even though it is unclear atm what triggers it.

I'm shit at Civ and haven't played it in Yonks cause I'm at uni rn, so having you explain nuances in these specific and seemingly minute details is really useful. The game as a whole kind of links into my degree as well cause you can take analogies from the game mechanics and translate them into Real World Shit like "oh right, Venice did well in the renaissance cause its shipyards were Tight and so its trade routes were exceedingly profitable as a result of innovative shipbuilding designs enabling more cargo space", & shit like that

What AI gives 6 gold per turn for open borders? What have you done to them!
@TheJamsplat

He had a friendship with them and as the Ottoman's are an aggressive expansionist civ and Potato was blocking their access to expand they were willing to pay a lot more for open borders. A civ like Rome on the other hand would ignore the Western part of the map and just expand south

@@TheJamsplat how does the AI make the judgement that they're boxed in? I thought AI don't really think about stuff that's too complicated
@TheJamsplat
@TheJamsplat 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxkuozc I think it is less about being boxed in and more about pathing. The ottomans want to declare war on people and Potato was essentially stopping them from attacking anyone as he had a friendship and the other civs are to the west. If the Ottamans could move troops over the water tiles he likely would have got less gold for open borders

I hate water maps, got a spawn once with two tiles surrounded by two mountain ranges, a lake, and the ocean, that was the quickest restart I’ve ever done lol

Think they tweaked the AI recently, just got completely wrecked on diety last couple times, they seem to be a lot smarter now, last night started game, and had two AIs show up with massive armies and declared war almost at the same time, had just popped out a slinger, so woulda been screwed with just one of them declaring war. and next game, only one declared war shortly after getting my slinger out, but showed up with all his guys again, before they only threw like 2 or 3 at a time. Even put it down to immortal, and got wrecked yet again! Yesterday was not fun :(

I played a game today where I was a good way towards a science win then got *devastated* by a bunch of disasters. A previously friendly Kongo suddenly rolled in with modern armour armies and kicked my ass. Was really impressed with how the AI chose the perfect moment to attack.

I thought it was a perfect amount of explanation, plot harvesting was one aspect I didn't really have a full grasp on and this really helped me out in understanding how to better analyze when/if I should chop. Keep up the awesome videos!

Very nice to have such a series again. I recently wasn‘t really effective anymore. I was a Bit upset about it because I know that I‘m better than this. This series reminds me how to be more efficient and concentrate on my goals.

This spawn is why I hate Civ VI’s spawning system. Every time you try for a water map, the game seems to spawn other empires right next to you.

I think this video shows that restartitis is a thing of the past! I would've started over on this map, no doubt, but from now on I will look more carefully what the map actually offer you. I'm surprised, when I saw this start: Oh no!.. and Potato turns it over to almost OP start. :) I would get Liang and spam fisheries wherever i can. Food is win.
