Z-42 is the next steel ship I plan on getting. I love the short smokes in Daring but not the short hydro. This fixes that

Yeah. I wanna try a Lütjens Daring. Got Lütjens and Z42 is my best bet for german ships, since I dislike the BBs and CVs. CAs (=Hindi) is OK but you can't utilize all of Lütjens abilities on it. So, in general, the idea is to compensate the loss of Healings in comparison to Daring by getting Lütjens and exploit the larger Hydro and faster speed combined with Reload Boost. ^^

Z42 is an under appreciated monster. I build mine for full hydro build and make caps and enemy DD my only objective. Just have to be careful around radar because it is so fragile. That being said I LOVE getting behind an island and hydro trapping radar cruisers. I also think it is the best DD in the game right now against submarines, nkt saying it is good, but it is best.

in ranked, its a monster, you pretty much lock down island caps and anihillate anything that comes near it. I also noticed that the superstructure shatters a lot of AP from cruisers when angled.

Just looking at the stats, Z-52 is a way better DD in my opinion. Z-42 is better on smoke... BUT Z-52 has - better torps - better gun angles - higher AP+HE pen - shorter shell flight time - more HP - greater speed - better concealment

z-42 has AP arming threshold of 18mm whereas z-52 has 21mm. Most DD hulls are 19mm, so z-42 has much better AP performance against destroyers, which is mostly the entire gimmick behind hydro + smoke + crazy AP dpm on DDs. You'll get overpens mostly in a z-52 if the enemy isn't angled perfectly for you, so your dpm against destroyers is much worse. The lower arming threshold also helps with getting full-pen on cruiser and battleship superstructures. It's not always about higher pen.

It can be hard to compare ships purely by stats. That's why videos like this are interesting. I got Leone as a trashbote because the stats were so bad. It's turned out to be really capable.

@@striderpianoI didn't take a look to the threshold so far. I will do some tests in a private training room with Akizuki, Fenyang, Schultz and Z-46 and see how fast AP can kill other DDs. Without improved pen-angles like Fenyang and Schultz I absolutely ignored the AP ammo of DD. Thanks for opening my eyes

Who the hell cares about better torps, DD influence is mostly about who can outtrade who on guns, taking concealment into consideration. Z-42 hardly cares about slightly lower concealment because of the Daring playstyle it can go for.

When Z42 was announced players went crazy over her stats. So, of course since she is german, WG nerfed her instantly into the ground. Sad ship and i dont see anything that would convince me to pick her over Daring.

Absolutely love this ship. Average damage isn't that high, but I do ALOT of damage on DDs. Wish it had better anti air, but alas, its German. I find myself running Gun Feeder so I don't lose DPM swapping HE and AP after a salvo, and that feels really nice. Try it out, esp with Lutjens (+ improved Grease the gears) Also, ship request if i may. HSF Harekaze, the first one, not the second. Kagero with 3/4 Akizuki firepower, I want to see you try that out!

Z-42 is worse at farming BBs and cruisers than Z-52 and better and fighting destroyers than Z-52. If you LOVE Z-52 but wish you were better vs DDs, it's a good ship. If you don't already love Z-52 do not get this boat.

This! The Z-52 is my most played DD. I love it but it lacks so much against other DD's unless you catch them with smoke and hydro. The Z-42 can go toe to toe with most of them. Against a Sherman I would run in my Z-52 while I usually have a good chance of killing one in the 42. You will lose HP but you will in most cases kill them.

I really like the idea of Z-42, especially as ZF-6 is one of my favorite ships. I'm just a bit concerned about how well it actually contests, especially with how broadside you need to be. Curious if you have feelings about the pros/cons of the two against each other.

Z-42 is almost inarguably the best cap contester in the game. The only thing she's genuinely got to be scared of is Smaland/Gdansk, but she will absolutely ruin every other DD. Having Lutjens on her for the free heal to make her a bit tankier and the added DPM is even nicer. Being broadside isn't even a huge issue because you should be broadside when entering caps anyways so you can back up if need be if a Vampire II or Sherman is coming at you, which you then proceed to smash outside their hydro range, as you do every other non-Radar DD.

Cherry picked highlights. I own that boat myself, and usually you dont get flat broadside DDs to fight. Usually you get into a situation like against the Daring, where you are constantly juggling AP and HE, or where you stick to HE but get outtraded because of how shit this HE is. Tried it in ranked and went back to Daring eventually, its just so much more consistent which is what you need when you want to carry ranked.

My only issues with Z-42 is the lack of improved penetration angles and the lack of good anti-air. For two tiers higher, you don't get much compared to Fenyang.

Fenyang literally has stock HE that gets shattered by DD armour. You have to use 3 captain points just to make her playable to the standard of any other DD. She's dog water. Z-42 is actually competitive enough that you could use her in CBs even. Though I do think they should restore her reload to the pre-nerf test amount it used to be (about 10% higher) and stop balancing things assuming people have the Lego commanders for them.

First, Fenyang has powerful Armor Piercing with improved penetration angles so it obliterates destroyers; you're not supposed to use High Explosive, or the Inertia Fuse for High Explosive skill. Second, Z-42 is not competitive at all, and you could not use it in Clan Battles at all, specifically because the concealment-to-Hydroacoustic Search range was nerfed and tie firepower was nerfed.

@@dzello I own both Fenyang and Z-42, I am quite familiar with them, and Fenyang is dog shit lol. It's HE is literally unusable because it only pens 17mm and shatters on most DD armour, so if you angle to her she does no damage. If you take IFHE you've lost 3 captains points just to make her HE usable, but now it's fire chance sucks. She is clunky and turns like a brick, she doesn't have hydro/radar or any useful utility. She's one of the worst ships in the game. She's a worse Akizuki in every way. Z-42 is absolutely a competitive pick once busted Smalands and Klebers/Marceaus start getting inevitably banned. She's arguably the best cap contester in the game at that DD tier.

I picked this ship last Xmas (along with the Lauria on coupon) but have had mixed results. It's definitely doesn't feel as Agile as Daring or Vamp, and lacks the gunpower of Kleber (my go to). I think I just need to play it more and try the AP more on large ships.

Sort of yes, Z-35 gets the lower tier German Cruiser hydro so 5.5km ship detect, so longer range than most hydro paired with short burst smoke.

From my first few testings it seems to be quite strong in gun fights vs DDs but very very weak on long rang shootings on BBs with a surprisingly low probability of setting fire. Long story short you need to have a good cpt for it to use the concealment skills

german DDs are absolutely amazing, they are completely designed around hunting and killing subs. An amazing hydro plus smoke, just charge down any submarine.

I got the Z-42 last year and I don´t regret getting it. It´s so good contesting caps and it´s AP is so good. I do run IFHE on mime just to get that pen damage when people angle. I highly recommend it!

Well if they removed the reload nerf on it i would be really interested in getting it cause of smoke hydro gimmick in order to secure caps more easily but WG just does not like Germany for reasons that all players know and its in a weird spot currently ..if they had to nerf it then atleast give it out for coal instead of steel

One of the great parts about when you finally get Z-42 is that you can then get Lego mod for Z-52 and make her more torp specialized while your Z-42 is gun specialized and get the best of both worlds. With Z-52 you get a DD with absurdly low, sub 60 second reload 80knt torps, still with smoke and 6km hydro, but your guns aren't like Shima level anemic. And then with Z-42 you get AP with 18mm arming threshold that claps DDs and a bit better agility, plus the ability to freely use Lutjens without respecing, which gives you even more DPM and a free heal. I do think they should give back the 10% better reload time they took away before release of her tho >.>

@@MarcusKuann yes but that generally doesn't matter for the ranges you want to engage at for both of these DDs (around 6km, aka short range fights). Z-52 does long range HE farming better, but that is generally not a good role for these two particular German DDs anyway.
