My first game with her a billion years ago, I was detonated by a Shima torp salvo 5 minutes in. My second game I detonated a Yamato with a yolo torp rush. I feel like that summarized most of my IJN games in the first few months during beta.

The special thing about double rudder Atago is that it lets you make lateral dodges while kiting the same way a DD can. That is, hard to starboard followed by hard to port, so your ship has roughly the same heading as it did when the enemy fired, but now your ship is a few 100 meters to the side of where they aimed, hence "lateral" dodge. This combined with the 41mm deck, a very low freeboard compared to other cruisers, and a heal, means a kiting Atago can rack up a ton of potential damage while still farming with it's full DPM thanks to being able to angle between salvos and the good gun arcs

My favourite ship in the game. Yes the powercreep is real, but you can still do wonders with her if you know what you're doing. Plus, that 41mm deck is just *chef kiss*

Also my favorite ship, fast, accurate and heavy hitting. Too bad the range is meh and reload is horrendous. I wish they'd give Atago a choice of fighter or spotter aircraft. I once rushed two CVs when my team was in full retreat and I guess they weren't expecting me to show up from the very side of the map.

I think it was my first premium ship too, followed by Atlanta I think. Really enjoyed her. Play her rarely, but when I do, it reminds me why I lived her so much. Those guns have a real HE punch and fire starting. Good AP and torps too. Great ship.

Atago was my second premium. My first premium was the Warspite from the beta pack with it. I still love Warspite to this day, even though wargaming gives it away like candy on Halloween now.

For those more confident in your ability, I'd HIGHLY recommend double rudder. 4.0 second rudder really lets you take advantage of your side armor and helps with the slow turrets. Good pick for those that dont prefer the passive farming playstyle. Especially since there are far better farmers out there.

75.4% win rate for last 53 games for reference. Sure it won't average as much damage but focusing DDs really helps the win rate.

Atago is so nice to play, it is quite tanky for a tier 8 cruiser, moves like a DD, very stealthy and have some very accurate and hard-hitting guns. Also black Friday event is coming out and you can get it for half price.
