Tales of Davy Jones and Dutchman tend to vary, depending on what culture they're told. My culture isn't really sea farer people, so tales of sea are usually quite mystic and murky. In norway there is kraken, we got our Iku-Turso. Can't remember did we have anykind of ghost ships though.

Another tale goes that he made a Dante style deal with the devil for immortality, and the devil as usual, twisted it. Killed him, and doomed him to a ghostly existence, tied to the sea.

That would be Bernard Fokke I think. He was thought to be in league with devil, he was renowned for his uncanny speed, what other sailors thought to be sure sing of infernal powers at work. He's also one of the role models for dutchmans's captain.

I sing this song so much, it drives my family crazy! They should've put this in the movie (at least in the credits.)
@MLMusicBox14 жыл бұрын
@ArnasonFamily ... No, he doesn't die. The singer goes overboard, yes, but saves himself. He manages to pull himself back to the surface. As he says, he turns his back on Davy Jones (ie, the bottom of the ocean), and leaves him and his locker far behind, thereby escaping death. So despite the spooky mood throughout, it's a happy ending.

One legend tells that curse was took place when dutchman's captain actually tried to get another place, table bay. However, the wind headed them, and went against them more and more, and Van der Decken walked the deck, swearing at the wind. After sunset his vessel spoke to him, asking him if he did not mean to go into the bay that night. He replied: 'May I be eternally damned if I do, though I should beat about here till the day of judgment.'

Use wikipedia: Versions of the story are numerous in nautical folklore and related to medieval legends such as Captain Falkenburg, who was cursed to ply the North Sea until Judgment Day, playing dice with the Devil for his own soul. The first reference in print to the ship itself appears in Chapter VI of George Barrington's Voyage to Botany Bay (1795):
@Unit40316 жыл бұрын
According to most versions, the captain swore that he would not retreat in the face of a storm, but would continue his attempt to round the Cape of Good Hope even if it took until Judgment Day. According to other versions, some horrible crime took place on board, or the crew was infected with the plague and not allowed to sail into any port for this reason. Since then, the ship and its crew were doomed to sail forever, never putting in to shore.

The reason why Davy Jones has the Flying Dutchman in the FICTIONAL Pirates of the Carribean is due to Calypso simply giving it to him, to help ferry souls to the "other side".

It's a movie. Historical accurateness isn't one of Disney's strong points or other film-companies in general, for that matter. However back then, If I'm not mistaken, a lot of professional soldiers and officers were mercenaries, i.e. hired soldiers. I know of a faroese sailor who was a danish privateer (the Faroe Islands being a colony of Denmark) who sailed, for a time, under the Dutch crown. I'm guessing on loan or because of some alliance...
@Aquafrostsheke13 жыл бұрын
@dragorider93 Yea however we weren't talking about Brimstone head. We were talking about Kaap de goede hoop & it's translation. lol. Unless Brimstone head is the translation? I don't think so though. :)

I don't get how they got to Davy Jones sailing the Flying Dutchman. I'm dutch and that ship belonged to Willem van der Decken(of the decks), a dutch man cursed by God that whould sail Kaap de goede Hoop(srry don't know the translation) for eternity.
@MugenYomi5 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the translation be the Flying Dutchman? At least, based on the rest of your comment he sails said ship and is cursed to sail continue sailing it, unless God got him a new boat in the myth?
