If you're gonna live this life in this kind of property, you better be 10x more wealthier than needed to do so.

The schedule tops out at $183,500 for DC, but that's usually for heads of agencies. Most make far less. And no, contractors don't make much more than the government employees. Most government contracting jobs pay less than their equivalent in industry. Some management and sales jobs can pay well, so maybe a few C-level exec live here, but that's not a lot. I make 6 figures as a banker in NY and still dont see myself w/ that kind of house, given the notiriously expensive region I reside in. In might stand a chance in MD or someplace cheaper, but then the local wages are usually proportionate to the cost of living. Meanwhile, as a “follower of all the rules” growing up, I’ve encountered my own seasons of struggle, having little to do w/ poor choices on my part as suggested in an earlier comment on this thread, & I had to accept a lower ranking position during the recession, etc. I’ll never forget one day when I encountered a polite, well meaning teenager who resided in a mansion that sat on a property like this but larger than a football field, who reiterated the sane spiel (“just listen to your parents & you can have this, too…”). I didn’t fault the youth for reiterating what his (wealthy) parents told him, as it was likely a truth that applied ro him. But I was alarmed at how out of touch with reality he (and likely many others) so clearly was. While it may be common amongst the inherently wealthy, that narrative (“to just be a good person & make the right choices..”) is based on a narrow and privileged perspective that ignores the realities and challenges of many people. Not everyone who lacks wealth is ignorant or irresponsible. Many people work hard and follow the rules, but still struggle to make ends meet. They face obstacles such as poverty, discrimination, lack of opportunities, and debt that are not of their own making. Not everyone has the same advantages or access to education and resources that can help them build wealth. Wealth is not only a result of individual choices, but also of systemic factors and historical injustices that have favored some groups over others. My home for 23 years. Many successful doctors and lawyers, often married to each other. A sprinkling of billionaires. Successful large business owners, C-suite. My daughter’s friend’s family owned Ringling Brothers Circus. We certainly don’t speak in the tone of voice of the narrator. Many Ambassador’s residences. Looks like Avenel.

I always said the same thing because my friend rented a room from a mansion in Old Westbury, Long Island years ago. The owners were getting a divorce and only the mother and two daughters stayed in this huge home. Eventually until the divorce was settled the wife was gonna have to move. It was too enormous and expensive to maintain inside and out…sad but Beautiful. I question the same here in these gigantic mansions and I do mean gigantic.

Being rich doesn't make you a bad person. I know someone whose father was a miner. She grew up poor. When she was older, she started a business and worked really hard, 7 days a week for years. She became successful snd now has one of those large mansions. And you know what, good for her. She deserves to reap the rewards of all of the work she did.

That's funny, I was thinking that looked like Potomac Maryland and lo and behold it was. I grew up in Potomac when it was horse country. When I drove around it 10 years ago I thought the same thing. Looked like God would walk out the front door. I thought what do these people do for a living? Now I call it God country. We had 5 1/2 acres back in the 70s. I can't even imagine what that would cost in Potomac now. Crazy how big those houses are now! ( And besides having horses we had 2 maids and a beautiful swimming pool)
