The erstwhile beauty of Potsdam the kingly and imperial residence of Prussia is mostly irretrievable lost, since the allies did a mindless bombardment in the last days of WWII (April 1945) which of course was a war crime.

An amazing architecture. That was a blunt barbarism to destroy those masterpieces.

@Bhoeble If the Allies had bombed only military targets nobody would argue with you. Though the war against Hitler was necessary your argument fails since the Allies deliberately bombed civilians and destroyed centuries of our culture and heritage! Furthermore Potsdam (with no important military base) was bombend in the last days of the war, thus a use- and shameless warcrime!

Paul van Beurden Air Chief Marshal [General] Sir Arthur “Bomber” Harris persuaded Churchill the war could be ended quicker by so doing, and that less Bomber Command aircrew would be at risk. There was also a dishonourable (in my opinion) atmosphere of revenge. When I served in the RAF in the 1960s, including in the BRD with battlefield nuclear weapons aimed at the DDR and Poland, it was noticeable that high rank went to former fighter pilots, but WWII bomber pilots stayed at the level of Flight Lieutenant [Hauptmann], mostly in ground jobs. Harris had to go to South Africa to find work. There were also many German civilian clerks at RAF Brüggen [Elmpt, Niederrhein, Nordrhein-Westfalen] who had been Wehrmacht officers and could never quite forget it. The great tragedy of German history is, I think, the way in which Prussia exposed the rest to foreign attack and the horrors of war, time and again. Current You Tube DDR/Prussia nostalgia reminds me of the outpourings of Brexit/Islamophobes. They are but two sides of the same coin.
