The Cold War

5 жыл бұрын

Our new documentary will Cold War journey with a video on the Potsdam conference held in German Cecilienhof in the Summer of 1945. Although the World War was not really over and the war in Asia was still going on, the allies, mainly US, UK, USSR and France, ended it in Europe and were preparing to reshape the world. With the leaders of the Big Three meeting at Potsdam, the structure and fate of the post-war world were being determined. By the end of the Conference, at the beginning of August, 1945, decisions had been made.

The only thing I feel was left out of these Potsdam videos is the weakened influence Great Britain had. Prior to the war it was the World Power in Economic and Military stregth, but by 1945 was Bankrupt and was over shadowed by the other Allied members. This made Britain the third wheel in negotiations and forced in many aspects to follow the American lead rather than push its own agenda as much as it wanted.

I'd contest that statement. Prior to the war, Britain never really experienced an economic boom like the US and Germany did in the 20s, and the great depression hit them pretty hard as well. The empire was already spooling down. Ireland and Egypt were independent. The Statute of Westminster made all dominions part of the Empire in name only. India was in a decades long struggle to gain independence, the war more likely delayed Indian independence rather than accelerated it.

Another reason Stalin might have backed down on Hokkaido in the end was that the Soviet Union did not have much in the way of landing capabilities, and that Hokkaido would be even more heavily defended then many of the Islands the Americans had been fighting for with overwhelming naval dominance. correction: 500.000 germans died in Czechoslovakia (pre-38) alone. the total amount of Germans that died during the deportation after WW2 was much higher. the total amount is unknown, as the deaths were roughly reported only in Czechoslovakia and the regions controlled by the western powers. many massacres were also blamed on combat during the end of the war, so even these rough estimates are rough at best.

If in Potsdam the big 3 agreed to "resettlement", why did the Czechoslovakia Pres Benes get criticized for expelling the Germans out of Sudetenland after the war? (Those Germans were used as the excuse for the pre-war "peace in our time" Sudetenland betrayal, and the Czecks wanted them out.) (President Benes was allowed the run Czechoslovakia a year or so, before the Soviets wanted control and he had to leave, again as he did in 1939....)
@nirfz
@nirfz 5 жыл бұрын
My guess is, the reason for the criticism is the difference between to "resettle somebody" and to "drive somebody out". To resettle somebody humanely at least on paper gives them time to pack their things and maybe sell the homes, while drive out means to tell somebody to leave and take all posessions. While the allies at least on paper chose the wording "resettle humanely" Czechoslowakia didn't. In the End the soviet union didn't do that much different, but the allies gave them a free ticket to do so, while Czechoslowakia decided on their own. The big ones seldom get criticized for something smaller nations do get. Which makes the things happening not any better on whichever side.

2:58 you include Transcarpathia in the blue Polish shade when it was never Poland, being a Hungarian territory given to Czechoslovakia, returned to Hungary between 1938-45 only to be annexed to Ukraine after WW2.

I never knew 1 and a 0.7 of a soviet soldier could overwhelm about a million japanese soldiers. And soviets often get bad reputations for their soldier quality, hmph...

I personally think this would work better with a focus on animations like on your other channel, with narration. I don't really see the need for a speaker

The Cold War answered another comment that the political ones are harder to have graphics etc, personally I don’t think they have the rights to much of the period photos and the big issue is the boring delivery style of the presenter

I have to agree with others that the narrator isn't cutting it right now. Having obviously Indy in mind, this narrator is worse in every aspect and lacks any kind of personality. Don't know if anyone can live up to Indy though so it might just be something you will hear either way but I have the feeling a lot of improvements can be made here!

I really hope you can do balanced videos. These topics are not easily explained in 5 minute videos. For example the beginning of the conflict in Korea. Do you start with the provisional government of the People's Republic of Korea? Or do you start after the imposed treaty by the USSR and the USA? Also, another wish I have is that you would use the correct terminology or at least add a short definition in at least one video. If f.e. media in the west talk about communism, they mean countries like the USSR - which, had an economic system which was not communist, but an official ideology of Marxism-Leninism which is part of the communist movement. So do you use the terminology they used themselves to describe their socio-economic system (socialism), or do you use the terminology which has no idea about communist theory? I really really hope you manage to remain unbiased, but I have my doubts that it can be done at all. Please prove me wrong.

@Peter Michalski that isn't what he said at all. he said that "socialism" and "communism" are two different terms, and often people use the wrong term (communist) when describing the ECONOMIC system of the USSR. Learn to read.

@Socialist fascist movement Dude that meme is so out of date, if you aren't 14 you must know why thats not true. Also OP's name is purposefully contradictory, that's the joke. (It's "Leninist" that makes it contradictory btw, not just communism)
