Pottery- DIY Slab Mats from Roofing Felt / Tar Paper

In this video I discuss using an inexpensive construction material called roofing felt or tar paper as a slab mat or work surface for clay. This is great if you find yourself working from home and you don't have a dedicated pottery work area. You can unroll a piece on your counter or table, work with your clay, wash or wipe the roofing felt down, and roll it up for the next time you need it. Roofing felt is available at most large hardware stores, and it's very inexpensive. I hope this helps out some folks out there. I know some handbuilders that use that stuff to make templates for their pieces. They roll or rib their template onto the slab, cut out around it, and then leave the tar paper on until after they have assembled the piece and that way it give support as they are working on it. Once they have the form assembled, they peel it off. Never thought of using it as a slab mat too, thanks for sharing!

I was hoping to see you use it to roll out a slab. I'm curious as to how well it peels from the clay slab? Being waterproof what keeps the clay from sticking to the mat instead of releasing as happens with absorbent mats.

Hi Janis, I got some used felt paper from the roofers in our neighbourhood....he was unsure why I didn't want the newer material with stick on capabilities. Have cut out the forms to use when hand building a box . I watched this video this morning and thought you would enjoy this amazing human being if you have not yet seen him.
