Welcome to Pottery Shorts, brought to you by The Potter’s Round Table, the topic for this episode is Adjusting a Kiln Sitter.
A kiln sitter that is not in adjustment can fail to stop a kiln from overfiring, or can be the cause of an underfired kiln load. Phil discusses how to test if the sitter needs adjusting and the steps in adjusting a kiln sitter with the kiln sitter template, and how to adjust the kiln sitter without a template.
The Potters’ Round Table is brought to you by Washington Street Studios, a community pottery studio, gallery, and pottery school located in Harpers Ferry / Bolivar, WV. We exist to provide ceramic artists an affordable, fully equipped studio space for aspiring, emerging and established artists to share their creative energy and knowledge in an environment designed to support the ceramic artist. My Duncan 820 s kiln sitter barbends as I suspect it should but my witness cones underfire somewhat. How can I adjust the sitter to basically hold a bit longer? The elements etc have all been checked.

Diane, it's difficult to make the hold a bit longer, but you can use one cone higher in your sitter. I really wish Phil were still here, he passed in July of 21. He told me to use one cone higher in the cone sitters. If you want a cone 6 firing, you should use a cone 7 in the sitter. The weight of the rod on the small cones will cause them to bend early. Monitor your firings and set witness cones inside the peep holes. If cone 6 falls before the kiln sitter shuts off, you can turn off the kiln and your good to go. Let me know if this makes sense, or if you want to chat about it.
