I’m going to try running my thumb on the top of the lid. I’ve had problems making the pot stay centered.

In Thailand they are obsessed with putting Buddha as high up in the room as possible. I think your head is not supposed to be higher than the effigy. Maybe that doesn't apply in Japan. I have one of four 24" (61 cm) vases Schalck made twenty years ago that were thrown in three parts plus the lid, I don't know if he used the tongue-and-groove technique.
