Pottery tutorial on throwing closed forms to create beautiful, one of a kind birdhouses. I combine wheel-throwing techniques with hand-building tips, using fondant, and cake decorating forms to create functional birdhouses that are works of art.

Could I make a suggestion about birdhouses? Birds that nest in holes and crevices - they’re very particular, they need a small entrance hole that reflects the size of their bodies: bigger than that, it’s easy for predators (squirrels or other birds) to get to the eggs and chicks. The big nature/bird charities usually have recommended dimensions for bird boxes / houses, especially the entrance. An alternative is to leave the entrance rim unglazed so that anything they add to close it off can get some grip. Perches at the entrance are perfect for predators, unfortunately.

Absolutely adorable! I love how you let the piece tell you where to go with it, always in the moment. Do you tell you customers not to hang them in the sun? I always do, because stoneware gets hot really fast when it sits in the sun. I have seen cooked little birdies! 😪😪😪

Fantastic! I don't have a turntable, but you can certainly do it with a mold. Could you perhaps show how you glaze/paint your great objects? Besides the glazes, have you ever done anything with oxides? Many thanks for your great tips.

I've done a lot with oxides and pigments. A lot of people have been asking for glaze videos. I just need to find a way to make them enjoyable since glazing is boring. :)

What Cone temp are these fired? Do you typically use Low Fire Glaze? I am most familiar with Cone 6 and the glazes run on the pieces, which is the desired effect, but I am now moving toward handbuilding combined with throwing and I do not want run in my glazing. Any advice you can give is appreciated. Thank you, Beth

Your skills are amazing. Lovely birdhouses! If they're going to be homes for real birds the hole must be smaller so predators can't get in. Not sure I'd want that lovely art outside tho lol.

Ahh, thank you. In our area, the birds are bigger. We don't have little finches or birds like that. We have hummingbirds, but the houses are too big for them. I was thinking bluebirds and such. I leave them out all winter, and they've been fine.
