Hey, you won! Congratulations! I like how you used only one theme and varied it throughout the score to fit the changing contexts, making the whole score feel both dynamic and cohesive. Also the way you introduce it initially is clever, actually giving us a fully developed variation of the theme at 0:15 instead of just a truncated motif, but not actually giving us the main version of the theme until 1:37. It helps the music in the opening scenes feel complete while still leaving room for further development. Excellent scoring and congrats again!

The gentle drift and build up of the theme walks toe to toe with the animation. It is wonderfully paced and fits the storyline perfectly. Hope you get to record it using a live orch as well - will be great to compare the difference in sound and can be another continuation to the tutorial!

Fantastic! I appreciated the way you directly synchronized some of the music to the action i.e. chair leg wiggle + flute trill. Then, you restated it in a callback trill later when she's flying through the air.

It’s like using a similar color palette for a painting or a film. Two very different paintings but similar vibe. This film for example feels similar to some Pixar films because of the pallets. The vibrant blues in the shadows for example. But it’s a very different film to any of the Pixar films.
@andta7889

Or maybe it was the concept art for the Pixar films. But that blue shadow is commonly used in other places too.

Wow! Awesome work! I'm visiting your page after submitting some music for the latest IFMC competition. Your work makes me think of one of my favorite pieces of all time: Bookmarks from Japan - by Julie Giroux. Particularly the main theme makes me think of the "Evening Snow" movement. If you haven't heard it - it's worth a listen! Super pretty music Jesse, and I loved the use of trills, tremolo, etc. for certain key frames.

Solid scoring mate! I just love it. So transparant and detailed. All within a iconic idiom still I think. Love the solid brass chord setting at 3:00. Did you mix it deeply afterwards? So what's next ;-) All the best, Jeff Hijlkema

I really appreciate that! Thanks for the kind words. I didn't mix too deeply! I have stuff more or less close to what I like in my template, and then I'll tweak with things as I go. I did some light mastering after on each of the stems, but nothing crazy. Just tried to use each of the samples for the thing they do best. And if you want to see what's next, click that subscribe button! (shameless plug). When I'm not busy composing, I'm trying to make videos about some of the stuff I'm working on, when the productions let me!

Thanks, Sayer! I really appreciate the kind words. It was an endlessly inspiring little film, and so much fun to work on. I honestly didn't expect such a compelling film to score when I signed up for the contest, so that was definitely a huge plus. All in all, the contest was remarkably decluttered and straight forward. I got hardly any emails at all and just stuck to the deadline and instructions I was given in the email after I signed up. They were really "hands off" and just sort of let the composers do their thing, and then they sent the winner's emails a few days before posting the results on their website. No feedback or commentary or anything, though it looks as if they're offering that this year. Last year, it was just a straight ahead contest. Simple and fun! I'd definitely recommend it, and I wish you the best of luck!
