I’m pretty certain that is charcoal, not graphite.

Sorry, could you please answer this question The voice in the comment says: graphic powder or graphite powder?
@darrenthompson73454 жыл бұрын
It sounds like he is saying graphite. It looks and behaves like charcoal, the material that is ground up looks like vine charcoal and my guess is that charcoal would certainly be more readily available at the time period referenced in the video than graphite would have been.

@@darrenthompson7345 Your guess is certainly correct, graphite, or lead mine, in ancient times called "piombaggine", was used, mixed with glue, especially to prepare pencils (from 1795 in compound with clay and carbon black by N. J. Conté). Whereas Cennini speaks of carbon black (vine black or vine charcoal), in his treatise at the end of the 14th century: Therefore if the comment voice speaks of “graphite” I have to delete the video and have the comment redone.”. Thank you so much for reporting

ARTEnet the voice over says "Graphite Powder" for the pouncing material although when that pounce bag is used to create a pile a material on the board the subtitle (1:32) references it as "vine black" .

It's really quite an unsatisfactory method. Surely there were better ways of transfer, even many hundreds of years ago.
