This would've been four years before the Aberfan Disaster, where an oversized coal spoil tip(against regulations) collapsed and flattened a school, taking the lives of most of the children inside. The miners had to use picks and shovels to dig out their own children, for fear heavy equipment would crush the survivors. Trying to get help and compensation was like pulling teeth. Most people were furious, yet not as surprised as you'd expect. I believe the events that inspired this song likely contributed.

Also written in response to Lord Robben’s neglect and apathy towards the situation, as well as his reluctance to actually pay his workers well. Lord Robbens was chairman of the National Coal Board, so he was basically *the guy* in charge, as I’m sure you know. Which it’s weird how he was literally in the Labour Party and didn’t care about… labourers.

If they were skilled labor jobs…..but they are not. They are jobs almost anyone can do and thus do not deserve the pay people are demanding

@@unspheredwings7859 if anyone can do them then you do it for that pay and tell me how unworthy they are of better pay. Just because anyone can do job doesn't mean they shouldn't be paid well and work in safe conditions.Alot of jobs are done by so called unskilled labor like assembling your car or paving the roads. So before you speak go work in the factory where ur phone and computer are made and tell me they pay is worth all your blood and sweat

It's not about skilled labor, It's the fact they're RISKING their lives breathing in coal causing black lung, they deserve payments for their hard work so they can FEED their families.@@unspheredwings7859

Never heard this one before, but it's great! I'll be listening to this for a while. If you like workers' songs like this, you should look into doing "Rigs of the Time". I think it's right up your alley. Rarely performed as well.

Tons of respect for the workers who fought for rights- safe working conditions, 40 hour work week, ending child labor, consistent pay, etc. Back then the unions really meant something. But now it seems like unions are just a new kind of greed. They fund politicians, their "liaisons" get paid far more than what the workers do, and they use shady smear tactics to convince workers to give up dues. It isn't uncommon for union presidents to go golfing with the bosses. Most union contracts even prevent workers from striking without union permission (and sometimes forbid them outright). And now its like they push for money, not rights. 40 hours a week is fair, 40% wage increases are absurd.
@skylark6167
@skylark6167 Жыл бұрын
FWI unions have always been political and always fought for better pay, and wildcat strikes have long been illegal because the legal protection to strike is embedded in the right to unionise. People are asking for steep wage increases because they've had no wage increase for years, while the cost of living and the boss's profits keep going up.
