The most requested video in the comments: Fisherman’s Wharf, is one of the city's biggest tourist traps . Souvenir shops and stalls selling crab and clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls used to be all over as do postcard views of the bay, Golden Gate and Alcatraz .But in recent years street conditions are eroding all the boutiques and eateries and visitors are met with rows of shuttered stores and boarded-up restaurants

I used to live in the Bay Area and every spring go to fisherman's wharf with some folks and window shop and hang out downtown and see all the sites and go to the museums, plays, symphony, and sit on the wharf and eat that fabulous San Francisco sourdough bread and grab some chocolate over at Ghirardelli Square. If I was really bored I'd go drive up and down Lombard Street. In fact I would drive to San Francisco and deliberately get lost in the city so I could find my way out. There's no way I would ever do that today. It's like putting yourself in the food chain and you're not at the top!

I'll never forget my destroyer sailing under the bay bridge to dock at Fisherman's Warf for 3 days R&R back in '76. Crammed pack full of businesses & customers, busy AF! Wax museum, tons of crab & fresh fish, lots of sailboats/fishing boats at the docks. I remember a thick fog over the docks starting to burn away as the Sun rose. It was rather magical looking. After a great morning looking around & stuffing myself with crab & other fish, a bunch of us headed straight for Chinatown. Half of us split up to look for nookie & the other half for hash or herb. Both groups easily found what they were searching for... Thanks for your tour!

I mourn the loss of my once favorite city, enjoyed from the late 50's; the fog horns at night, the unique cafes and restaurants. Golden Gate Park before it became an open pit sewer, how sad as I remember the odors of the ivy, now replaced with the smell of urine and feces. Like Camelot, I almost wonder if it ever really existed. It has been over 2 decades since I returned and, having moved from California as a socioeconomic and political refugee, know I will never see the fog roll in, nor hear my beloved fog horns again.

I worked in the City for over 2 years at CPMC off of California street near Russian Hill. To see this iconic area boarded up makes me cry 😢 Those three restaurants WERE San Francisco! The wait staff were dressed with short tuxedo tops. Your meal was delivered on exquisite plates. Outside of each of them you could watch the crab 🦀 being cooked and you could buy fresh crab, clam chowder and sourdough bread. And as you showed across the street from the restaurants were souvenir shops that also sold sweatshirts. During the day the weather was stellar however when the fog creeped in the temperature would drop and many tourists would run in to get a sweatshirt

That sounded about right. I visited Fisherman Wharf first time in 1977. I went there last time in 2012 and it was declining then. The street crime was so ad I wouldn't want to park anywhere near the wharf.

So very sad. My husband was born and raised in the Marina District. His uncle used to work near the wharf and his Grandfather was a crab fisherman. He would dock his boat where you showed the yucky water. I met my husband 47 years ago and loved the city. The magic is gone. Look what Newsom and Pelosi allowed to happen. It’s beyond criminal.

The loss of Alioto's and Fisherman's Grotto is an absolute travesty. San Franscisco has lost an important part of its history and culture. These are famous restaurants that served the elite. This is almost like burning down an art museum or setting fire to a national park. It's one thing to lose Jack in the Box and Walgreens but we are now losing the best parts of San Franscisco.

He is cherry picking. A lot of restaurants opened up / moved a few blocks south to North Beach, which is more lively than it was pre-pandemic. Also some places he claimed are "closed" are not closed, they just weren't open at whatever time he chose to film, for instance at 6:50 "this one also recently closed" no, that is Surisan, and it is very much still open (hence all the tables and chairs lol).

@@HazeOfWhearyWater Yeah, a lot of these businesses in Fisherman's Wharf, which exclusively rely on tourism because it's peak tourist trap that has zero appeal to locals, closed down a couple years ago during the height of the pandemic when tourism dropped to nothing. North Beach on the other hand is next door, appeals to both locals and tourists, and has had a ton of new activity over just the past couple years with tons of new bars, restaurants, shops, etc. opening up. For tourists there's also Pier 39, again right next door, which is overall a pretty vibrant tourist trap still.

Right behind the Tech industry (which is also leaving San Francisco) much of the city's income is derived from tourism, and one of its prime tourist attractions has always been Fisherman's Wharf. I wonder how many tourists from all over the world saved their money for a trip to San Francisco, only to be greeted by homeless drug addicts, disgusting and dangerous sidewalks, and shuttered businesses and attractions. Our experience the last we were there in 2011 was when my son’s new car was scratched by the homeless guys who were sitting on his hood and playing their boombox. He called the police and they took the report thenasked him if he wanted to sue. He said yes and the police said, “unfortunately, the homeless people are king here in SF”. That was the last time we were there as a family and my grandson’s car was broken into and took his laptop. We avoid it like a plague.

Man, this is crazy. As a Bay Area native, I have been to Fisherman's Wharf many times, from childhood all the way up until my early 40's. I have never seen it look like this. Some of those restaurants I had been to many times throughout the years. I never thought I would see some of these restaurants close. Somehow it's very eerie and unsettling, like staring at the apocalypse. It makes me relive memories in a place that I know, no longer exists, and it seems like it was in a different world.

I first arrived to San Francisco in 1979, at 18 on my way to Travis AFB. I'd go down there and walk the whole city, go to the forts, hang out at the beaches, eat at all the diners, Crivelli's Oyster Bar at The Cannery. It was vibrant. Last visit was about 8 or so years ago. Still a great place. Now with the tolerance of crime and vagrancy nobody wants to be in business there. Like a lot of places run by extreme leftists. Very sad.

I'd launch in Marin or Mare Island and sail some rough water or camp out at Bodega Bay. Could do a lot on $420 a month in those days. I was in the AR shop - 60th FMS. Then to Ramstein for 2 years. We used to visit in the late 70’s until the early 2000’s and are grateful that we saw it in it’s prime. My 90 year old FIL recently told me that he wanted to visit San Francisco as he had never been there but I told him that it wasn’t worth the trip. Your video showed the current situation but I was surprised that there wasn’t as much people living on the streets and trash/debris so was cleaner than I expected. We ate at Alioto’s many times and was sad to see that it hadn’t survived. Thank you for your video.

I used to work at FW from 2006-13 and I’m telling you that place is jam packed from Friday to Sunday .. you even have to wait 30-60mins for a seat on one of those family restaurants. Those street fried food and clam chowder are delish . Now that magic and vibe is gone thanks to Covid and the politicians who ruined that once great tourist attraction.
