The crew forms and pours cement over the top of the root cellar and wood house roof.
After the concrete is cured, dirt will cover the root cellar roof but a greenhouse with be built on top of the wood house’s cement floor. The wood stove in the wood house, below the greenhouse, will heat the house and also heat the greenhouse by natural convection.

Did you weld extra steel to the sides of the shipping container to reinforce the sides?
@AmishMeadowsOfficial
@AmishMeadowsOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, now I will need to get a video of the inside of the root cellar.I didn’t use steel, I used 3 inch thick planking on the sides vertical members and under the roof ceiling and screwed it altogether so it’s very very strong with the timbers. Also I can hang shelving and hang hooks off the ceiling to hang garden produce and things from them because now it’s wood instead of the metal sides of the container.

The water run off from the mountain will saturate the ground engh to collapse the sides of the container. Need to weld 6 inch c channel to at least each 1/3 of the container sides.

Elvie, that is a great idea for your heating. My dad owned a “Gentleman’s” farm growing up. It had forced heat and air. The main duct was in the ceiling of the daylight basement. He bought a large wood stove with a heatalater on it. When the temperature of the basement hit 80 degrees F, a fan would turn on. Dad cut a hole into the main forced air duct and the fan would go on. It would suck the heat out of the basement and blow it throughout the house through the ducts, like you’re doing. It was very efficient. He also had a fireplace on the main level of the house. The main level was the living room, kitchen and dining room. The upstairs had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The basement had the den, a bathroom and the utility room. My job was to get up early, put more wood in the fireplace and the wood stove in the basement. I’d then run outside to bust the ice in the watering troughs for the animals. I’d run and jump in bed to get warm, then get up and get ready for school. It was a long bus ride into town for school. When I turned 13, I’d drive our tractor to school so that on my lunch break, I’d go home and break the ice again in the watering troughs, put more wood in the fireplace and wood stove and back to school I’d go. After school, I’d break the ice again and add wood. On Saturday mornings it was my job to clean out the ashes from the fireplace and stove. If it needed to be done more often during the week it was my responsibility to. When spring would come I had a bit of a break with keeping the house warm. The wood stove was our main source at that point, but then it was time to work the fields. The farm had 3 main areas. Every year we’d only use 2 pastures and let the other one “rest”, allowing the Alph Alpha to re-seed itself and of course we’d fertilize the pasture, then in the fall we’d get the brush hog and mow it, let it rest for 2 weeks and till it under. When you live on a farm, you always have something to do. I’m too old now to do all that work, so now I do the gardening and tend to our small orchard. We grow almost all of our fruits and veggies and whatever we don’t eat, we freeze dry.

I will be interested to see if your heating idea works. I tried something similar about 30 years ago with so so results. Lived in a house with a subterranean basement, with 2 floors on top. The wood stove was in the basement, huge stove. It was located right beside the old oil furnace. We opened the door to the blower fan and blocked the cold air return off on the furnace Turned the furnace fan to summer mode so it was always on Left the door to the basement open for cold air return. It worked but had to have the stove burning hot, the temperature would be 90-95 degrees in the basement to keep the main floor a nice temperature. The bedrooms were upstairs and they were cooler. We had an electric baseboard heater in the babies room to keep it warmer. When it got cold you had to feed that stove many times. I would set an alarm clock to 2am so that I could refill the stove otherwise I could never get it back up to a comfortable temperature. It was not a very big house either. I can't remember if you showed how the cold air return was going to work. You will need a monster of a stove, that greenhouse will be plenty warm. Did you ever entertain the thought of wood fired hydronic heating. That would be a sweet system in that house. Beautiful house by the way. That view, ohhhhhhhhh !

Hi, interesting using a shipping container and burying it. Hard to tell from your video what paint work was done on the exterior. Should look at using Sherwin Williams epoxy paint next time. I worked for a company that built these style of containers to bury radioactive waste. After painting with epoxy paint, it's almost impossible to sandblast off. The idea using epoxy paint is the container, once buried, would prevent rusting for hundreds of years. Enough time for the contents radioactivity to be harmless, or so they say. I can say the epoxy paint is bullet proof. Thanks, Benton

Put a forced air heat exchanger between wood room and house. It will draw hot air that will warm house air without mixing and exhaust the "dirty air" outside. If not you're sucking anything that comes in on the wood and blowing into your living space. At a minimum pollen and mold. Just my 2 cents.
