So it looks like you sharpened the blade - similar to sharpening a kitchen knife, but I don't understand the hammer and anvil. Why would you turn the sharpened blade?

I’m creating a bevelled edge to the blade so that the edge is thin enough to cut grass. Also has a cold forging effect which hardens the edge of the blade so that it will hold an edge for longer and be more resistant to damage. It’s called peening.

I just got my first Austrian rig and I’m waiting to treat it with some oil first. Is this peen job inverted because of the type of anvil you’re using?

Yes, using a curved anvil you have turn the blade upside down.

As you can guess, I'm not very familiar with scythes...

I’m a righty, so would I start at the toe end and go toward the heel? I’ve heard that the hammering helps draw the blade along the anvil as you move it. Or, are you right handed and hammer with your left to help move the blade along? I peened mine for the first time, and I think I have to much cup on the edge, so maybe have to hold the blade more flat, and work on keeping the edge in the centre of the anvil. It still sharpened up well, just need to get used to it.

@@leebdj1949 as far as I’m aware you should always work from the heel to the toe, doesn’t matter if you’re left or right handed. If you’re getting a cup on the edge of the blade you need to move the blade further back on the anvil to flatten the edge or it won’t enter the grass at the right angle to cut it.

I’ve always loved copper. I have arthritis in my fingers and can no longer wear my wedding ring so I wear this copper ring instead.

Thank you, I have been told i work like a machine too. Yes I'm left handed with a hammer but I can use both left and right hand scythes.

@@SomersetScytheSchool That sounds like a challenge. Never tried. Never been in contact with a left hand blade either... I can imagine situations where a lefty would be convenient, but then you would have to drag 2 scythes along...

@@dutchcuda check out my recent shorts - there’s one of me and a friend mowing a path together, one with a left and one with a right.

@@SomersetScytheSchool that works nicely. Ever wonder why your friend was 3"shorter at the end of the path...? 😁
