I do like your in camera POV much better. However if I may make a suggestion. It would be very helpful if you explained why you focus on a certain spot and recompose from a technical perspective. For example you may focus on the building in the far back but your purpose was to recompose and shoot the people in front of your camera which therefore requires to have a certain amount of closed aperture to make sure that everything from the building to the people in front of you are in focus. My tendency is always to just focus on the people passing by which most of the time works out but not always. I think it would be beneficial to learn more about your approach because it seems that you mostly focus on something static even though you are wanting to capture people in movement. So for example you would focus on the wall but your purpose was to shoot the people walking in front of the wall which at f2 would be challenging but at F7 and up is not a problem. Other times I noticed that if the person you wanted to photograph was static then you would focus on that person directly. So as you make your POV videos, if you could explain your focus reasoning that would be super helpful. For example in the scene where the two dogs are kissing you initially focused on the person on the left who appears to be moving but then in subsequent shots you focused in the background even though you captured the people and dogs in front of that background. That background was fairly far which means you needed a certain amount of aperture and shutter speed. I think you were between f7 and f9. I think that if you add these explanations which you could do after the video not necessarily during, a bit of a commentary after the fact, I think that for beginners and intermediate people that would be most helpful. I think the number one challenge in street photography other than composition and storytelling is learning how to focus in the right areas with the right apertures to be able to capture the scene properly. Also I noticed that you used auto iso so talking about what settings you allow yourself as limits in your auto ISO profiles would also be helpful. Some shots I saw where at ISO 200 others at ISO 1600. Where do you draw the line to maintain a minimum shutter speed in your auto iso profiles? Thanks

I loved this! So good. First of all, kudos to finding a new and fantastic way to actually show what you see (piping HDMI output to a recorder et cetera). If the video was only that, that would have been enough for me, but it is so much more. The pictures are great and it's incredible to see the actual process in action. Finding great backgrounds, good compositions, nice light and then having the patience to wait for a great picture to show up-well ... what can I say ... I really loved this. Thank you.

Like it isn't difficult enough to stand close to people on the street and taking pictures without disturbing the scene, I bet talking to yourself isn't helping. I think you did a great job. An editing improvement might be to show the pictures you liked a little longer with a voice-over why you think it worked (or failed) ... as a kind of b-roll for the street feed.@@streetphotographywithnickt1648

What a great video ! Learnt how a professional see and press shutter. only at middle of the video I sudden notice the ISO was set at 3200! at day light!. And with this high ISO, large DOV and high shutter speed can be set, which are important for street photograph. I own only the first generation X100 for 10 years, and time to upgrade it, Q2 or X100V...

Are you using shutter AF and half press all the time then recompose? It looks like you would really benefit from using back button focusing, did you try that?

I have always back button focussed, including in this video. Its the only way to roll :-)

Hi Alex, glad you enjoyed it. I shot film for 15 years or more and loved it. I think we all just choose a medium that suits our shooting style. As you saw I never know when my photo is made, the scenes develop as I watch them over quite a long time and I record them continuously until they pass away. The 850 frames I shot the other day produced three pictures I like but would have been 24 rolls of film. Digital very much suits my way of 'hunting down' of the moment.

Really good video, the first of its kind! (the first I am aware of anyway). It's extremely useful (I suppose, especially for a beginner like me), as reading stuff about street photography is good but watching you and understanding what you do with your camera and why is way better. I like the recap at the end, but I'd suggest showing some of the photos that you'd consider keepers from that session. You show a few during the video, it could be good even to just show those again at the end during the recap, just so we get a better idea what the final product looks like. Cheers and carry on!

Thanks for the video Nick. You mention being disciplined with composition, but how about being disciplined with the amount of shots one takes? Like most photographers, we came from a film background where if you didn't have a lot of money you had to be selective with what you shot and how many photos you took because you couldn't afford the processing costs. I find that a lot of street photographers 'spay and pray' with their digitals with the hope that there must be at least one keeper.

Jeff, I do shoot a lot but to me that is the great advantage of digital photography, images are being made on the streets that just wouldn’t have been caught on film. I’ve always believed in using the technology we have not what HCB had 50 years ago, he was using the latest equipment at the time. Digital allows you to go for shots, go for possibilities that someone with 36 frames wouldn’t. I shot film for the first 15 years of my career but for Street Photographers particularly, digital opens so many new ways of working.

Hi Judson, thanks for your comment. The Fujifilm X100F has a 23mm lens which is equivalent to a 35mm.

Thanks Louis, I find it much quicker to move the camera quickly than use the little joystick to move the AF points. I do move the AF point when shooting commercial work or fashion etc. but not on the street usually. I also find it forces me to check focus every now and then so I don't end up with 50 frames slightly soft based on my first focus point. I hope you enjoy future videos :-)

Hi Jan, well maybe I should do a video about this but, I shoot with autofocus on and triggered by the back button, so I focus with my thumb and fire the shutter with finger. I shoot manual exposure with the ISO set to auto. This allows me to set my chosen aperture and shutter speed while the ISO fluctuates to accommodate. I shoot a minimum of 500th/sec out in the streets and aim for f8 if the light allows.

Oh yes and I restrict the ISO to a maximum of 3200.

I really enjoyed this video and others on your channel. Showing us the scene through your viewfinder was very informative. Can I ask you to comment on why you don't seem to move your point of focus around much? I'm always repositioning mine, but perhaps I don't need to if stopped down?

Hi Matt, thanks for watching. The reason is that I use back button focussing, I program a button in the rear to set and lock focus, then recompose my picture. Its much quicker than using the joystick to move focus point around. Thanks
