This was shot during a Sailing Virgins course in the BVI. That was our first actual proper fun sailing day. The winds were strong, the spirits were high, and we did a long stretch that day. Filmed some more RAW footage of MOB drills. Excited to share with you.
Stay tuned ✌🏻
We encountered some clouds forming above the mountains in Tortola on the way to Cane Garden Bay. For the sake of the boat and the sake of the lesson, we decided to reef early while we were sailing.
1. Head into a close reach so you can ease out the main sail so that it's facing the wind, while still maintaining some speed and course with the headsail.
2. Ease the main (all the way or not, whatever works best for your boat and sea conditions) and enjoy less heel and a luffing mainsail that you can lower or raise.
A quick note before the next step:
On this boat, the reef line pulls both on the new clew and on the new tack.
Some boats have two lines, one for each clew and tack.
And some have a reef ring. I'll explain about the reef ring (the two lines just pull on two lines instead of one; same process).
3. Ease out the mainsail halyard while pulling on the reef line in a coordinated manner, stopping when the reef points (new clew and new tack) reach the boom.
4. If you have a reef ring, maybe sending someone (weather permitting) prior to help pull the sail down from the leech until the ring reaches the gooseneck is a good thing, but if not, now is the time to do it and secure the ring to the gooseneck.
5. Tighten the reef line (by pulling on the new reefed clew) as much as you need to control the shape of the sail. Now with adjusted foot tension, tighten the mainsail halyard if needed.
6. Tighten the mainsheet and adjust lines to make the sail look SEXY (boom vang, traveler, reef line, leech line, whatever).
7. Enjoy sailing with a smaller sail.

Excellent job! A few questions... How many reefs does your main have? And do all reefing lines run to your cockpit? Do you have some type of line to aid in dropping the main? We have a Westsail 43. The only lines we have in the cockpit in relation to the main are the mainsheet and the traveler adjustment lines. We have to go to the mast to adjust the reef lines, outhaul, main halyard. And someone has to pull down on the sail in the tracks to get it to drop.

Hey, I'm a sailing instructor teaching on different boats every week, We have boats with all type of reefing techniques, this one has 1 line that pulls both on the clew and the tack of the sail all from the cockpit, some boats have two lines one for the clew one for the tack, and some boats have a ring that you attach from the mast and a line to pull on the new clew, but i think you always need a line to pull on the new tack, do you have a line like that?

@OranTeach ours has 3 reefs, each with their own line to the clews. We just hauled out and packed everything away so I'm not able to check right now. But I believe there are rings on the tack. We rarely are in conditions needing a reef, but when we do, our process has been to adjust the sail height to the reef point, secure the clew line, then run short lines through the 4 or 5 grommets in the sail between the clew and the tack and wrap the lines around the boom. This takes around 10 minutes. So when I saw your video of it taking less than a minute and all done from the cockpit, I was mesmerized
