We all have made the mistake! Long leash strings cut the rail like butter. Leashes usually have a wide "rail guard" part, but it only saves the rail when combined with a short string to the plug.

looks like Chickens- is it? I always tie a safety strap that connects the surfboard in front of the leash itself. For faraway places, it's a good idea to carry a small bottle of epoxy and masking tape with you for an unaesthetic repair but one that could save the trip.
