I'm from Ibusuki, Kagoshima prefecture! So happy for you to visit Southern Japan, I'm currently living abroad and I miss it very much... If you ever come all the way to Kagoshima, we have a lot of volcanic activity from Sakurajima volcano nearby so there are a lot of spa (onsen), and you can take sand baths in Ibusuki (you get buried in warm sand with just your face free, if you ever wondered what it's like being a burrowing mollusk) Sakurajima volcano is one of the most active volcanos in the world with daily ash eruptions, you can hike around the island, it is very interesting. Kagoshima is know for Satsuma pottery and Kiriko cut glass - there are classes you would enjoy a lot Our best foods are sweet potato (Satsuma imo), Shirokuma (shaved ice with condensed milk), citrus, giant radish (Sakurajima daikon) and black meat. I have my mother send me sweet potatoes all the way to France, they are THAT good... As for alcoholic beverages, we have shōchū (made from sweet potato or brown sugar) There is also Lake Ikeda, we have giant eels and (supposedly) a lake monster called Issie I hope you have a nice trip, people tend to favor Tokyo and Kyoto but Japan is more diverse than one might expect. I praised my home prefecture, but Hiroshima, Kumamoto and Okinawa are also great destinations ! I'm always so happy when people express interest for Southern Japan, thank you ┌(・ω・)┘

I live in Japan and Naoshima (the art island) is absolutely one of my favorite places here! Rent an electric bike to get around the island and see all the museums/ houses converted into art. Miyajima (near Hiroshima) which as the floating tori gate is really cool too. If you're going to kyushu, yakushima is amazing and was the inspiration for Princess Mononoke. It's great if you like hiking, sea turtles, being near an active volcano, and really old trees! It is hard to get to, but if you'll be in that area I recommend it. Beppu in Oita Prefecture is known for their onsens! My good friend lived there and the videos there seem really cool. Miyazaki also looks gorgeous. Just a warning that lots of kids take their school trip to Okinawa/ the Ryukyu islands around November/ December, so maybe book some stuff in advance/ make sure that what you want to do isn't all booked up. Let me know if you'd like any more tips! :)

The Kokusai dori indoor flea market in Naha is huge (there's also a fish market somewhere in there), and the Gyokusendo cave is beautiful and the Churaumi aquarium is really really nice. 10/10 would recommend making your way there 🫶

I have found a few mother of pearl ones, and two huge wooden buttons with the statue of liberty embossed on them. There's also a big piece of tatted lace, and a sports ticket and a luggage tag from the 80's. (I washed the button grime off my hands before leaving this comment)

When I went to Japan I bought a goshuincho at a temple, which is a little accordion booklet that you can fill with goshuin. That is a page of calligraphy and stamps, that you can get from about every temple and shrine in Japan, for a couple of hundred yen. They make amazing souvenirs as some are real works of art. One of the goshuin I collected had a little green frog spirit painted in it. So, not necessarily a specific recommendation on where to visit in Japan, but what to get as souvenir! (Besides of course thrifted things 🥰)

My Mom and me loved going to The Ohio Thrift Store down on South High at the strip mall. A few years after she passed away, I went back in that same store to see the prices were way higher on used clothing and the housewares. My Mom loved finding wooden pieces and brass items. I do miss thrifting in Columbus. German Village was my old stomping grounds, I'm now 65, and while most of the village looks the same, it too, got very expensive to live there. I'm 3 hours away now, and live in the woods.

As always, love the cozy vibes of your videos! I did want to caution you about those clip frames though, if you want that artwork to be around for the long-term it would be best to move them into something with an acid free backing, and matt. A shadow box could also work. Clip frames can trap moisture, and the mdf backing will likely cause discolouration over time. the frames are cheap and cheerful, but there is a downside. Do with that info what you will, hope you are enjoying fall!🍁
