All right for all you young truckers. Number one, carry bags of cat litter for traction. Carry a shovel to remove snow and ice out of your way - also mud. Get you own inside/outside thermometer so you know the temperature in your immediate area, don't count on any weather app on your cellphone. Remember that the road freezes when it is 27 degrees out, overpasses (concrete) freeze at 32 degrees. Never be afraid to get out our chains and use them on one set of drivers to get out of parking lots. Keep your speed down in snow and even lower in ice. In fact, if the roads are frozen up with ice then sit and stay warm because it is real easy to jack-knife on ice even when you are traveling in a straight line. You trailer will come around on you if you get stupid. Once that ttrailer is off center by 17 degrees you have lost control and you can't pull it out. Take this to heart and learn it well.

thank you so much for this🙏💯 question is it smart to chain up before shutting down so incase the next day it snows hard and potentially get stuck I’ll have chains on at least?
@martaamance4545
@martaamance4545 2 жыл бұрын
@@chez8239 Pay attention to the type of surface you park on. If the lot or rest area is concrete and you drove in with chains on and the lot is packed with snow, then leave them on, it take less time to take them off than put them on. In cold weather always pay attention to the weather. Inside almost every truck stop one of the video screens is tuned to the weather channel. Spend time to watch the forecasts that include where you are headed. If you have a smart phone then make sure you can get the weather forecast for where you are and where you are going. If the temperatures are going to be below zero then be prepared to chain up, if they are below 27 and road isn't clear, then chain up and keep your speed down. Personal experience, I was driving I-80 west of Laramie when I hit a stretch of road in January with considerable ice. I was only doing 45 when the flatbed started to come around on me as I lost traction. It took me about a mile to gain control and get the truck down to a 'safe' 35 mph. If there had been a car beside me I would have knocked it off the road as I need both lanes. Shit happens and I had both skill and luck on my side that day. That is why you always pay attention to your trailer. One other thing to note are those 'Super Truckers' racing through the snow at 75mph or better, they kick up enough snow to cause a white out for as much as a mile and you can't see a damn thing until it clears enough to steer. Heaven help you if you have a long curve in the road. You get paid to deliver a load, not wreck a truck, so even if you are going to be late take the time to be safe. But it's just not snow. I-40 in New Mexico in the summer time can throw a ton of rain and hail. It gets slick and visibility becomes non existent, pull off to the side for the few minutes and let the storm pass. Beware of fog. One of the worst accidents I ever saw was on I-40 about 50 miles west of Amarillo and the fog was still heavy. Half a dozen trucks were involves along with a couple of autos. One tractor was burnt out, three trailers were destroyed and rear bogies all over the place. Three truckers died. Cause was super trucking idiots. You can't be doing 80 mph when FedEx doubles are ahead of you doing 45 mph. Watch out for those super truckers, they are death traps waiting to happen. My first real run in snow came heading east out of Salt Lake at night. By the time we came to the weigh station at Rollins, I counted 14 or 15 west bound trucks either on their sides or jack-knifed, one barely hanging on, cab was over the cliff. Traffic was backed up miles east of Rollins. If you truck long enough you will see all manner of accidents. You really have to watch out for the local drivers. Fort Worth, I-35W and I'm in the middle lane with 40,000 lbs of aluminum ingots, tanker to the right. We're doing 35-40 mph and the road is ice. Dumb ass Miata is over taking me on the left and I already know he is going to spin out in front of me and I know I am not touching the breaks. Damn if he didn't just do that, did a slow spin in front of me and the tanker and lucky for him he made it to the curb. I watched as that asshole started the car up and began to haul ass some more. I tell you these stories not to impress you but to alert you to the dangers of trucking. Again, shit happens and often you can't do much about it. If you drive long enough over the road you will have an accident and with luck it will be a minor one. Remember, you have to constantly thing two or three miles or more ahead when you drive. Keep track of everyone all the time. You cannot be texting and CBing while you drive. Even talking on your cell phone is a distraction, so pull over if you have to take a call. When shit happens it happens quick. Take a tire check every two hours, get out and walk around the truck for five minutes, it will make a difference in your driving abilities and your attention span. Create good habits and stick to them, find a good routine to follow. and stay safe.

First time seeing and driving in snow was a few months into my career. The parking lot fiasco was an eye opener in these conditions. Rather have stayed on the road than try to pull off into these places. Learned quick to have a shovel and bags of salt. An hour before leaving clear it and put salt in front of tire for some traction.

Lol! Bro that was on the CDL permit test that your supposed to drain the air tanks at the end of each work day.and in cold weather if you don’t have a methanol injector on the air system .You should carry some to pour in your air lines if your brakes freeze up it melts ice and evaporates quickly. One year is definitely still a rookie. Coming from someone that has almost 15 years experience, the day you think you know everything, is the day you better get out of the truck, because you're going to kill somebody. Also, when you drain the condensation out of your tanks you don't have to drain the tanks all the way, the condensation will sit in the bottom, you only have to let just a little spurt of air out. One more tip, never ever ever try to turn around in a residential place. Anything that looks like a house, don't do it. It's better to drive 30 miles up the road until you find a business or a warehouse it's got a lot big enough for you to get in and get turned around.

Love the videos bro! Word of advice you are not supposed to microwave Styrofoam 😂 heat a cup of water in the microwave then pour the hot water into your noodles. The noodles might taste better lol but I had a very bad experience like when your brakes popped out on you. I was hauling over-size mobile homes, going on I-10 in Beaumont, Tx heading towards lake Charles, La. The big bridge there was under construction so instead of there being 2 lanes on each side they went down to 1 lane on each side. Well I blew 5 tires under the mobile home and the house sat on the ground right at the merge point at the base of the big bridge.... So I was stuck to where no cars could go around me and it was already 3:30 in the afternoon so needless to say I created a huge traffic jam... The highway patrol was there with in like 3 mins wanting to know wtf was going on. It took me about 45 mins to be able to get the truck off the road. luckily since it was under construction there was a spot that was part of the old bridge that I was able to back the truck over into and get off the travel lanes. Bro I was on the news and everything.... lmao

"Imagine California snows..." Dude, California isn't just Coastal So Cal and the Bay Area. Ask any trucker who regularly goes over Donner Pass on I-80 about the snows... You can gets dumps of a foot or more in a single storm....and the town of Truckee (just below the pass to the East) averages 16 days a year with snowfall of 5+ inches. Even in So Cal there are mountain passes that regularly get enough snow to close them for 8-48 hours during winter including Tejon (I-5) and Cajon (i-15).passes.

Bro, ive been OTR for just over 3 years now, and sometimes I still feel like a rookie. Lol . Anyway, not trying to tell you how to run your trips, but as a fellow OTR, when I'm on a long trip, I always try to run as far as I can on my first 2 days. That way you aren't pressed for time on the whole trip, and you never know if you're going to need that extra time on the back end of the trip for unexpected issues. Such as wrecks and traffic not to mention any type of equipment issues. Just a thought.

Snow is no joke it’s looks fun but it isn’t especially if your from the south. I.e. places it doesn’t snow. Northern people are the kindest in the winter man they literally have to help each other make it thru the winter.

When I feel my tires spinning and I’m not moving I would put it in reverse and let my truck roll out of the ditch instead of just revving making it worse. Than I would turn my steering wheel away from the spot I was in And once I’m clear I gas it That usually works out for me

I wish I could have talked to you about swift while you were there I was supposed to start training in west valley city but I got stranded by Greyhound in Cheyenne due to route being canceled without notice. I called swift recurring they told me that if I didn't get to the school by that Monday I would have to come back I told them where I was and they said I would have to get a bus back home because I couldn't get there in time for class that Monday they said they couldn't get me a bus home for 3 days . They expected me to sleep on the ground in the middle of nowhere while I waited for greyhound to get running again. I will never deal with swift again.

@@mouseclicksforu9724 If you drive your car hard or if you drive long distance, it is best to let the car idle for a few minutes to cool down and it helps the oil flow through the car. This is to help prevent premature wear and failure especially for turbo cars. I pop my hood open when I do long road trips in the summer at a rest stop.

@@mouseclicksforu9724 basically it’s not good for the engine to be turned off right away after driving because it gets hot and needs to sit and cool down for a couple minutes before turning the truck off.
