He was fed regularly, had a bed, clothing, education, health care for the time, and was fairly safe. Plus he had a career. That's as good as it got. Most people didn't get so much social security and still got abused.

What? Being a squire was an apprenticeship. That's how you learnt enough to become a knight, if you were good enough. It was a system based on merit. If you weren't good enough you wouldn't have progressed beyond page.
