Nitpick: eunuchs are one of several categories of individual barred from taking imperial exams. This is why they fought so bitterly with examination selected officials, who got by merit what they got through extreme sacrifice. In general, eligibility for officialdom could be very biased. Sometimes geographical discrimination was pervasive, other times, ethnic discrimination (nomadic dynasties tended to discriminate against Han, Han against nomadic ethnics, though being the supermajority, capable Han could usually find a place). Professional butchers and sorcerers were nearly always barred from taking examinations. Merchants, other artisans, clerks, and priests sometimes were disfavored as well. In general, a prostitute, beggar, vagrant, slave, or comedian would know better than to even show up. I don't have sourcing for this, but an undertaker would probably also be considered too ritually dirty to take part. Eunuchs have the same issue, but clever politicking can make up for formal exclusion, anywhere and everywhere. Of course positive discrimination also existed. High officials' children consistently did well, for what reason is left to the imagination. Sometimes explicit favoritism was written into law (legacy preference if you will), but other times, if you had family in high places, that just was very convenient in knowing what to write. But when all was said and done, it still is the case that very meritorious scholars of low birth could slip through and make careers of themselves. For those not officially discriminated against, but unable to benefit from family connections either, the broad middle classes in other words, there was always room to dream about a career in service to the Emperor.

this reminds me of the spring from my youth. i remember walking around the west river in order to relieve my mind of the stress that came after taking the imperial examination. i remember having high hopes of the future, as i've seen some of my peers raise themselves to the top because of this examination. i remember seeing the emperor sitting there with a bored expression on his face, judging us students. I had taken the palace examination, which, looking back at it, wasn't too hard. The questions were all about the current state of affairs in china, and I tried my best to answer the questions much to the emperor's liking so i'd be one of the more higher ranking officials. I wasn't ill, but I was tired - I had taken departmental exams just recently. I still find myself to be very lucky. a few years later, I remember the emperor - zhenzong, if I remember correctly - had introduced quotas on our degrees. That spring, i looked at the willow trees swaying with the slight wind. The sky was blue, the sun was surprisingly warm. This was the first time I decided to stop and smell the flowers, telling myself that no matter what happens, I'll be okay. I thank you for this playlist.
