The nice new 'council' houses that have been built where I live are mostly inhabited by 4x4's ,problem families, drug dealers and 'new' arrivals forming mini- ghettos. The current housing shortage has little to do with Thatcher

In all likelihood, this is what prospective illegal immigrants in France are told before they pay the people-smugglers to arrange and facilitate their illegal entry to the UK... "Please don't worry. We have nearly a decade's experience in the illegal immigration business, and the British government has no interest whatsoever in putting a stop to our criminal activities. When you set off from the beach in France, nobody will stop you. You won't be in the dinghy for too long, as the French authorities will make arrangements for you to be picked-up either by the UK Border Agency or the RNLI, a British charitable institution. You will then probably enjoy a long stay in a high end hotel, before you are given your permanent rent-free home by the British government. British politicians are driven by self-interest, so don't worry about the hapless local people waiting to be housed. They will be sent to the back of the line. If you encounter any problems, we can provide you with contact information for hundreds of bogus charities who will coach you - step by step - on how to successfully exploit the system. No need to learn any English, as a free translation service will be provided. Any and all legal costs will be met by 'Legal Aid', another system wide open to abuse and exploitation. Although millions and millions of British people detest being taken for fools and treated so unfairly, the country's political elite, together with the media, ensure they have no voice. They are completely powerless. Bon voyage!"

I have lived in my flat for 22 yrs paying the mortgage. Since that 'mini budget' the mortgage has increased threefold. Some arrears built up and now Lloyds Bank, yesterday, have sent letters saying 'we are applying to the court for an Eviction Date'. Have worked since I was 15, now 57, and Lloyds are actively trying to make me homeless because of the interest rate rises, despite me paying the monthly mortgage in full, 80% of my salary. I just cannot believe that this has been allowed to happen in this current climate. Their advice was to contact Shelter or the local council. And thanks to Lloyds I cannot even sell it as now worth less than the mortgage.

@@raven-sf3di Well, you certainly know how to be utterly ridiculous don't you? You bring a whole new meaning to 'over the top'. We live today, in unprecedented luxury compares to the past - and not the Victorian era, but living memory. I suggest that you look at some social documentaries about life of the working classes in the 1940'-1970's. When I started work (inflation rate 24%, BASIC income tax 32% - no personal allowance) credit cards were incredibly hard to get - then the banks cottoned on to how much they could make in interest by letting 'riff-raff' have credit cards and letting them buy stuff they couldn't wait to save up for, and didn't need and thus was born the era of unprecedented debt and people 'just one pay cheque away from' homelessness and gargantuan, never-ending profits for the banks.

Before Tony Blair, House prices and rents were affordable. That all changed under New Labour because the government/ Bank of England deliberately supressed interest rates forcing up asset prices including housing. Post 2008 Gordon Brown introduced QE which meant event more money flowed into asset prices forcing up house prices to unaffordable levels and the Tories continued with the same policies. All parties are responsible for this mess but it started under Labour.

Additionally mass immigration has clearly had an impact on demand for housing both rented and purchased.

The transfer of wealth is more of the issue, with this aspect it's the Bosses fault for a low wage economy. Yes Immigrants sometimes drive down the wage but the Bosses are paying it. When are we going to hold them accountable for this?
