We are a 6 figure income couple and had very little saved and not much cash lying around the preverbal". '...don't have $500 for an emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards. One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke. So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

I saw other signs of poverty, deterioration of infrastructure, fall in the quality of transport services and other things. I love the UK and have been dreaming of returning there, but I wonder if it is really worth it. I do not know if London has been worse since Brexit, but the North where I stayed has taken a turn for the worse demonstrably. It makes me very sad that Brexit happened the way it did and the UK government still has the nerve to publish on its websites news bulletins regarding the "benefits" of Brexit and the "freedoms" of Brexit. Why did it have to be like that? I was really surprised by the run-down appearance of many things I remembered in much better condition in the past. Parties simply raising more money with little accountability where every pound GOES is rife for financial shenanigans. This is why the late DIANA was respected. She refused to simply do sanitized photops for charity which were designed mostly to help the Royal NOT the victims of misfortune. @@saturationstation1446no. Once Great Britain has a government in the post-Christian state. Example, and there are many more, thousands of shuttered churches all over England. Check out the media-loving and much loved recent Christmas Carol service. I watched and read the entire programme details. Kate’s statement made the evening about HER platform of children and baby welfare and caring - NOT about THE BABY born The Lord Jesus Christ Whom CHRISTMAS is all about. The Name of the Lord Jesus was never uttered by the Anglican ministers or Kate. How very disrespectful to Our Lord. They only used the generic non offensive to false religions “God” in the service and prayers. The carols sung thankfully were good and honored Jesus as the Reason for the Season. Those officiating did not honor Him as such. The Royal Christmas cards do not honor CHRISTmas at all. I say these things to indicate how firm and acceptable is the lack of respect for real Christianity in the UK. The Royals are not even questioned about this by “fervent” Christians. They need to learn to join families. Share resources. Britain being a cold country most of the year, heating will be the biggest draw from salaries. Learn to share homes folks. Things are not pretty in a lot of countries these days. There's a reason why we Indians live in with parents and some even with Grand parents. Moving to smaller homes that require less heating is another solution, but that won't be pretty in a few years. Inflation is going up everywhere.

Everyone lives in tiny houses already! Most of the houses have severe mould. And falling to bits. Did you not see the disgusting boarded up houses on the documentary? These are almost on every street. Its not a joke nor sensationalist journalism. They're representative of the general condition of scores and scores of housing. And where do you suggest these 'extra' people sleep? In the bathtub? You are talking about India, a hot place. Indians don't need heating like that!! Surely that's obvious. Did you not hear the narrator say that winter conditions last 6 months? U.K. mostly is cold and wet. You can't apply the same simplistic solutions and logic to hugely complex problems and entirely different environments.

I'm so glad we don't have those prepaid meters here in Australia we just get our electric and gas direct debited each week. Also it's illegal in Australia to cut people's power even for non payments. I lived in the UK for a year in the late 90s and things definitely weren't this bad then. The cost of living has gone up here too but thankfully it's not as bad here. Hubby and I work and have kids who are nearly all adults. We still rent though but we are thankful

Just unbelievable. I live in Germany and soon it's gonna be the same here. I mean, I'm not on social welfare and as far as I know it's still somehow working here, but as an average working person, with the rampant inflation and raising costs of living, one can barely make the ends meet as of late. Indeed, one is scared to turn the heater on... Having a roof over your head is slowly becoming luxury! Many people find themselves paying much over half of their net into the rent costs. I feel sooo sad to see the elderly and sick people - people who really need support, not receiving the help that they deserve. I litteraly cried. Yet, here, the migrants who have never payed a dime into the system, receive 550 eur per person per month + social housing paid. Most of them are young healthy men. All of this at the expense of tax payers, who in some years, when they may need the help, will end up exactly the same - because everybody knows that money is running out thanks to irresponsible governments who are living in some alternative reality. Western countries are not so great for living anymore! Theoretically, we are one of the biggest economies in the world, but the inequality has become enormous. Our states make us share all the costs there are to pay, but the profits are never shared, they're privatized and they go only to a handful of "chosen ones", financial elites who can live their luxury lives. Most of us work hard every day only to be paid a shitty salary, especially compared to the cost of living. The governments have compleyely forgotten, that a healthy middle class is the most important pillar of a healthy democracy. The middle class has been being slowly killed off in the recent years and it's so sad to see people in need end up like this. This must end in social unrest at some point...

There needs to be many more like him...never think you can't change something...you just need to have the courage & character to. It shouldn't matter what area of the UK you are from...I don't get it...if they are UK citizens, they should be able to receive help no matter where they live in the UK. "Heat or eat"...that is below poverty...what is the UK thinking? Crappy health care, even if it is free!! Make me glad I live in the US!! Thank God for that doctor too...there are some really caring, understanding people in the UK, despite all the problems they are facing. Thank God for the charities, in the UK, but sooner or later they will be burdened to a point of breaking, if the government doesn't step in to support them too, then the entire system will collapse...not a nice ending for so many people depending on charities.

It is interesting seeing how much more community and solidarity minded UK is versus the US. The United States videos on poverty had poor people saying things like " no one poor has ever given me a job" and they think that they are supposed to suffer economically because the rich deserves it. They said they didn't mind the increasing profits of the rich as their lives get worse. Americans have an identity issue.
