So my aunt, who is Chinese but speaks FLUENT English told me about her trip with her friends to NYC. She a seasoned traveler so she's accustomed to these tourist traps. She'd usually just blabber in Chinese and smile and laugh while calling for her friends and everyone in the group would do the same. They basically got free pictures of Minnie Mouse, Batman and other costumed characters and saying "thank you" in a HEAVY Chinese accent and just walk away.

I'm a native New Yorker and I actually got robbed by the monk guy. This happened when I was teenager but he made me put on a bracelet wishing me luck, but then immediately demanded money from me! So I was trying to write down just $5. But he made me change it to $20 for no reason even though I saw someone else in the list had given him $5. Oh and he was guilt-tripping/gaslighting too like saying it was for a good cause. I was so mad that day. And the worst part is my friend was right next to me the whole time when that was happening but he didn't do anything to stop it. But the monk seemed to be less aggressive towards my friend which meant he could just say no and not get robbed. So unfair. Word of advice, avoid them at all costs and don't let them put anything on you or accept anything.

The third one happened to me. It was my first time in NYC. I was walking calmly minding my own business in Times Square, and then suddenly like 6 people dressed in Disney costumes literally SURROUNDED me asking for a picture. I said “no thank you” multiple times, and two people like grabbed me to take a picture with them. At this point I was very uncomfortable and like I said “ok ok let’s take the picture”. Once it happened, they asked me for money, I refused, and indeed they started to get confrontational and rude. So to avoid problems I gave one lady $20 and walked away. My friend almost fell for the mixtape scam. We were travelling to NY and these guys were handing out their mixtapes in these CD cartridges to us and asked for donations. My friend handed them a dollar bill and they were so upset like "that's all ur giving me?!" and rejected it. And that's not the worst part, my friend opened the cover and there was NO CD INSIDE. We just walked away knowing we dodged a bullet.

(I was 7 when this happened)When I went to nyc, someone in a Mickey costume grabbed me and my sisters, and so my parents were very confused and surprised, (my little sister was 5) they forcefully took pictures of us and threatened to take us and call the cops when my parents said they wouldn’t pay, so my dad said this is illegal, and said he would call the cops, and forced them to give us back to my parents. So yah. I was in Spain a couple weeks ago and I was feeding the pigeons in Barcelona. My mom was scared of them pooping on her but she still wanted to take pictures. After taking a few some lady with a ton of make up( dressed up as a skeleton.) kept photo homing such good photos. We told her we didn’t want a picture but she kept getting in the way. At some point she started demanding 58 bucks for the picture she forced her way into. We just left and she was pissed.

For anyone curious, I’m a New Yorker and I thought y’all should know that these scams are generally only in Times Square. There are a couple others, but especially the costumes and monks are only in that area. There are lots of other wonderful places to visit, no worries. Central Park and Rockefeller are popular, and I recommend checking around the boroughs. Astoria is a beautiful place, as is Roosevelt Island. Also if you’re a first timer, I recommend traveling with a friend or two, for the experience and for general safety.
