If you cure the jig heads in an oven after painting them the paint will be a lot harder, so it won't chip as easy & you won't need to use a hardener. 350 degrees in the oven for 15 minutes will do it, plus a few minutes for the jigs come up to temperature (I usually just pre-heat the oven with the jigs inside). Jigs with weed guards need 25 minutes at 250 degrees (so the weed guard doesn't melt). I do NOT suggest curing them in the same oven you cook your food in (like I did), sometimes the paint will drip & get on the bottom of the oven, the oven will smell bad when you cook, it is probably toxic for your food, and your wife will have a fit . IMPORTANT: Always remove paint from lure eye before curing as it will will be extremely difficult to so so afterwards. As always, make sure you have adequate ventilation when doing this stuff as the lead fumes (when you make the jigs) & the paint fumes (when curing the paint) are very bad for you.

Thank you for the info. Up here in Alberta, Canada, we have 'Princess Auto' and they distribute the same products as Harbour Freight. Only the labeling is different. Lo and behold, they do carry the 16 oz powders for 12.99 CAD which as of today, converts to 9.62 US. Two ounces of Pro-Tec is about the same price, so that is pretty decent savings. Cheers.

I preheat my lures to 350 in the oven. Quickly dip them into the powder and then return them to oven for another 15 min.

Sounds good but the way we do them is fast and even though we don't bake afterwards they still hold up great. But the rocky/wood rivers and lakes we fish they don't last long lol. We just fire up lead pot pour another 100+

thanks for the tips, harbor freight only comes with B/W colors, I was wondering what kind of powder would be simillar to it or pro-tec for that matter, is it thermoplastic powder? can it be applied to acrilic, wood, stainless?

I have seen other videos heating them up with a heat gun or lighter . then dipped them after the jigs cooled down then reheated to add another color to them . Then for the final hardness they either reheated with a heat gun or put them in an oven or toaster oven for the final hardness of the paint
@HillsandGills
@HillsandGills 5 жыл бұрын
Well we like to heat, dip then color most time with fingernail Polish colors after drying we add a clear coat of fingernail harder and works great. We also heat, dip then use the software plastic color dip to dye the white dip like green orange and so on in the dyes. Then add the clear coat fingernail hardener. We do this with Bass jigs we add skirts or just the 1/8oz jig heads we use on swim baits. We been doing this many years and does the job. But everybody has their style of dipping there's really no wrong way Thanks stopping by

@@HillsandGills True no wrong way .I like the idea of using a heat gun to heat them up but wondering how the heat gun would do on reheating them for doing the final touch . your video give me some ideas as to do mine when I get started doing them I was thinking to heat dip and add a different color by paint brush after a reheat for the other color
@HillsandGills
@HillsandGills 5 жыл бұрын
The reheat with the heat gun may cause bubbling of the dip. Try dipping then fingernail Polish of color of choice ( many colors on the market and .99cent bottles works great then clear hardener) we don't reheat after them steps plus Polish with glitter in it makes for some nice heads for swim baits, chartreuse Polish dirty water and orange and red great for smallies. We found clear hardener let's the jigs take a beating on rocks and bottom fishing... Just a tip

You lose alot of paint not using a fluid bed. Kinda why your board is covered in drip marks. Baking also makes them last alot longer. Few special methods I use after I cure them so I can throw them on the ground and they still dont chip. Some secrets stay secret. But I recommend the fluid beds

@3:25 it doesn't come in anything but matt black and white now. I got the red years ago and just got the matt black. The matt black is great, but the red doesn't seem to come out so bright, it's darker than what you'd think by looking at the powder. Maybe if enough people ask, HF will carry more colors.

I asked at my local store I would love to have more in colors. But the guy said black/white. So you got red thats awesome will go and see if they have it or can order it for me

@@HillsandGills When I got the red it was years ago. I bought the HF kit and bought red with it, but it sat on my shelf for years. I finally got around to playing with it. It's too dark, so I'm thinking about using white, then red over that, but IDK if that'll work or not.

I've got a question for you, is the harbor freight paint epoxy? The reason I ask is because I was thinking you can get automotive powder paint for anywhere between 9 and $16 a pound and that would be a lot cheaper than buying protech but I'm not sure what automotive powder paints are made out of? Polyurethane? Thanks.

@@fishyhobby3697 Its called OS coatings. You can find it at Cabelas, Bass pro and some of your smaller shops. I get mine from a local shop in Milwaukee called Reinke Brothers. He also sells the clear finish and the special thinner. It can be difficult to work with but when get a little practice it's all down hill from there. I've painted over 100 jigs using vinyl. One trick I learned is to let them hang for a couple days because if you try to box them up to soon they fuse together.

Yes we use powder coating on our jigs have been pouring, skirting and coating painting jigs for years. On the outer clear coat used clear fingernail Polish and Testors enamel model paint also. I've bought jigs in the past from handmade to retail and they chip from rocks/dragging and bottom bouncing just taking beating from the bottom. No jig is foolproof from chipping unless your just going to swim it . All in all been jigging many many years one of my favorite lures our lakes are deep clear rocky lakes and that means jigs. We've poured jigs and not even painted the heads and took quality Bass the key is in the skirts and the right trailers that's what catches the Bass eyes. A main reason in painting the heads for sale from my experience. When I see key for a painted jig head is when swimming a swim bait on it off bottom

Why not use chartreuse powder paint and not fingernail polish...
@HillsandGills
@HillsandGills 4 жыл бұрын
Because we can just use the white powder coat and color in many different colors with the nail polish with no need of buying powder paint for each color we need. The waters we fish are very rocky and lots of wood deep lakes and rivers. And we go through a lot of jigs. But can pour high amount of jigs fast dip- paint and back fishing and the fingernail polish we use holds up great and takes a beating. Been pouring and doing this for many years

When you dip have a fine sifter something you may use while cooking like for flour. And keep the powder fine. Dip fast in out and once dipped while holding curb of the hook tap the shaft of the hook on yor index finger to smooth knock off excess. We have that ball to sometimes but fish can care less lol. To people its more of pretty thing haha

What we do and it works. We beat rocks with our color dip jigs for walleye to smallmouth. We dip let dry then spike-it (coloring) then after drying again we then put a coat of clear finger nail polish on the heads for the glossy hard coat. Works great been doing this for years and catching fish. Also when we clear coat with the polish we will sprinkle glitter on some jigs and let it dry that's a nice looking jig to. So does this has to be cured like the powder paint geared towards fisherman?
@HillsandGills
@HillsandGills 7 жыл бұрын
With any powder paint the option to be cured is there but we dont when applied and it holds up awesome against rocks wood and so on And we fish them in rivers and lakes a lot. We do apply a coat of finger nail polish for color but lately we have been using spike it and they look great so good Ive bought several colors in it and the powder coat in the vid is as good or better than the ones marked for fishermen and the price no contest it just isn't sold in the fishing department and thats why its a third of the price and triple the amount . When it comes down to it I myself see no need to cure the paint we have been pouring our jig heads for yrs and I have some thats 2 to 3 yrs old and still looks great Thanks for Stopping by
