I've always been really interested in powder coating and decided to get set up to be able to powder coat small parts here in my barn. I bought a powder coating gun and a sample pack of different powder colors. The biggest hurdle to get into powder coating is the parts have to be baked after the powder is applied. I had a used kitchen oven I was ready to dedicate to this. I cut a heavy duty rack on the cnc plasma cutting table that I could hang parts on. I also set up a sand blasting cabinet, which is important for fully cleaning parts before the powder is applied. With everything set up, I cut some test pieces and applied all the different colors. I think powder coating is going to be very handy with small metal parts I make in the barn, since clean up is so easy and powder coating has a really high durability as soon as it comes out of the oven.

after powdercoating for years, ive found that you should start your timer when the powder hits full liquid state on the entire part. otherwise you may have under processed powder that isn't as durable.

PC, Painting, chemical coating, anodizing, etc. Are all tools in the tool box. All about the material you are working on, and what its intended purpose is. Can’t PC plastic, as parts will melt. PC is easy and fun, and worth getting into if you ask me. Painting has its place!

One really good baking setup is using an electric smoker cabinet. A lot of the "repair/restore" channels in the community use them for baking paint. For the blasting cabinet, buy 3M self healing film, and put it on the inside. When it can't heal anymore, just replace it, and the glass remains clear. Cheaper than replacing glass or plastic.

If you want to apply a heavier weight of coating you can preheat the component, apply the coating and then bake as normal.

Good day one. I’m using an old refrigerator body. You know just the shell. I picked up four old stoves on side of road. Using the insulation and the flat metal. Made a larger oven using the heating element and two of the larger electric heating pads. Works really good. FYI: I had an appliance repair guy check out before use. Had to get a separate heat register to not over or under heat. Good luck you always make interesting projects. Give Jake a pad on the head from me.

Something that isn't common but you can regulate the air pressure to change the amount of etch you get. Also different media can provide different finish. The valve or door at the bottom allows you to change media quickly. On the regulator for your gun you can if you want use two regulators. One to bring the pressure down to about 25 psi then the second stage to about the 5 psi you need. This works best with a large diaphragm regulator on the second stage. These are a lot more expensive but if you do this a lot it's worth it. Maybe not needed for what your doing though. To make an oven, I used galvanized steel, valley tin for roofing, over a steel tube frame. Two layers of 1 inch Iso board from a big box store, a PID controller using Two SSRs controlled by the PID controller. I used two oven heating elements on the bottom because my oven is almost 4 feet long. I haven't put steel on the outside yet but it's up and running great. The door is just two layers of that one inch iso board taped together using the aluminum tape in the heating and cooling department. With this idea you can make as big an oven as you need. Most powder coat oven have fans to circulate air and get an even temp. I'm not sure I going to do that but may. Maybe.

Just a piece of advice, eventually you will end up sandblasting the inside of your glass viewing window. You can buy clear sheets to adhere to the inside and change them out periodically when you start having a harder time seeing through. Cool video though man. I found that when you are not happy with the PC results or you want a super finish the thing to do is give the part a good hand sanding with some 320 grit paper to knock off the gloss and more importantly, use the first coat as a guide coat and try to sand off everything. What stays fills in low spots like a surfacing primer but it will take the heat of the oven. All you need is a bare spot to ground to and it will coat just fine and the finish will be even better. If you are removing a mistake just sand out the blemish and knock off all the gloss and dust it again.

Always use silicone plugs or tape to cover any threads before coating. It's better to not coat the threads rather than recut them afterward. Also think about hanging before you cut the parts, by adding small cut-away clips with holes here and there. Happy Easter and cheers from Chicago!

I've been working on my powder coating setup as well. I'd love to see a follow-up to this, especially around anything you come up with around the marks your hooks left. Personally I have tried to minimize by using solid Ethernet wires (very thin). I've also seen many builds of ovens online and would love to see your take on it if you decide to make a larger oven.

Be really careful with the gun lol. If you touch the tip to the work pice by accident it will give you a hell of a zap. In addition for really consistent coloring. Use nitral gloves after sand blastinf and wash them down with alcohol. Oils of any kind will end up screwing with the finish.

I would be seriously worried about spraying in your workshop. You will get Powder everywhere, and that is not just a problem of dirt but also a serious danger to health as you will accumulate a lot of very fine particles over time. For the oven: a friend of mine build a system with moving stove plates that heat up only an area. With this he was able to coat 6 meter beams in his garage. Basically four stobe plates on a rail that are slowly moved over the part. Worked great. Maybe that is an option for you as well.

Awesome video, but I'm still not sold on powder-coating. This looks like more of a hassle than purchasing a $50 pop-up spray tent and busting out the rattle-can. Visually: It doesn't appear to be much of an improvement over spray. Longevity: Cheap Rustoleum black is an excellent rust prevention spray, and it's been tested (and I've confirmed) that it out-performs even cold-galvanized. I wouldn't be surprised if it gives powder-coating a run for the money. If i recall, powder-coated items need a base-coat, then top-coat if they are to stand up to weather. Durability: This is likely a win for powder-coating, but I'd love to see someone confirm this. Any time I need durability with spray, I simply hit the part with a top-coat of flat-clear. That way you would have to break through the clear, and the base with in order to see any imperfections.

I've been powdercoating for a few year at home some observations you will very quickly move away from a domestic oven. That hanging wire is way way too thick and one is best, The new rack was nice but over kill. A sand blasting gun that you can make your own tips for is best. Buy the best coating gun you can afford. The Faraday effect is a thing and a real pain in powdercoating. Yellow and white are the worst colors for not coating thick enough.
