"“Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.” Seneca Lucius, 2000 years ago These days you can add all the grifters like Matt Powell, Ken Ham, Kent Hovind etc. Useful to keep the money rolling in.

I'm not claiming to be a mind reader here, but in his case I strongly suspect that he's simply lying about most of what he touts, as opposed to some of his sort who are just plain wrong but genuinely believe what they say. It can be tough to sus this out though.

The US government subsidizes religion in the form of tax breaks. IMO this is a violation of the establishment clause of the first amendment.
@Phylaetra
@Phylaetra 3 ай бұрын
Religious groups are not the only ones that get tax breaks, and to keep the break, they do have to adhere to some rules. So - religion is not being subsidized over non-religion, so not a 1st amendment violation. Now - we can discuss whether or not any group should get a tax exempt status - but if we do have any, I don't see how religious groups can be excluded from them in general.
@Dr.JustIsWrong

Nah, it's so taxes cannot be structured to 'accidently' inhibit religion. But pastors, and anyone - by whatever title - receiving 'value' ARE taxed. Ask Hovind.

@Phylaetra When some of these churches don't adhere to the rules , such as blatantly promoting a particular political candidate, no one seems to go after them. If the rule isn't enforced then it's worthless.

@@Zero-ei8jn that is a different problem. And I agree that it is a problem, but it is not a problem for religious groups in general, nor is it limited to religious groups.

Did anyone ever try to bring that case to the legal system? I can’t imagine that “other things are tax-exempt too, so that makes it ok to break the establishment clause” kind of argument could fly in reality. 🤔

Kent Hovind - "Dr. Dino" - had been the guy that got me into online debates about religion, in a slightly roundabout way. He had always been a fraud, but over the years, and with his various failed ploys and problems, has turned into a total failure of everything he tried to be, even iin his own twisted way. And this is the man that Matt Powell wants to copy. No, he is the least credible source of information imaginable.

About the school shooting thing. The US, a predominantly Christian country, has, by far, the most school shootings in the world. As everyone in the world is either a theist or an atheist, you would think that if religious beliefs or the lack of them was what caused school shootings, then you would see a more even spread across the globe.

The idea of Matt Powell making the big bucks by coming out as an atheist just strikes me as hilarious. You're right to point out that atheism doesn't have the big money grifting circuit, but my focus is on Matt Powell himself. The thing about believing in God is it’s a choice for you to believe or not. You not wanting to believe has no effect on me who decides to believe in God. No one came to me with PROOF of God and I found out myself… I found out through Faith, the very thing most Atheists outright reject as a way to find God and that is unfortunate. The Bible says in Romans12v3 that we can find God through the same measure of Faith that everyone is given so that no one can boast that only he can find God and you must go to him. It’s not rocket science like so many want to believe and it’s quite simple.

It is immoral to force someone into the type of existence that they might not like or possibly even hate to exist in. But it is extremely immoral to force someone into the type of existence where they will be forced to be in horrible jeopardy of possibly going to hell. And so for all the theists that believe in hell it is extremely immoral for them to have kids because they believe that they are forcing them into the type of existence where they will be forced to be in horrible jeopardy of possibly going to hell.

I can't come up with a justification to create anything at all, and when it comes to thinking and feeling beings, it's especially bad. I suppose if an omnipotent being just wanted to create a bunch of pretty rocks and gas balls or something that it's not such a big deal, but the instant one of those pretty rocks can start noticing things about its existence, some kind of ethical boundary has been transgressed.

Sure you could argue most video responses or comments are ignored by him but he’s taken part in Kent Hovind’s idiotic Whack an Atheist videos. He should know the real position of Atheists by now. After doing this for so many years he’s still repeating Hovind’s comments about rocks, which so many people have explained to both him and Powell that is a straw man and it’s getting exhausting to watch.

Let me make sure I've got this right... Thinking that a rock just popped into existence is silly... But thinking it happened after an invisible magician said a magic word makes sense... Riiiiigggghhhhtttttt.... It all sounds to me like "God is Matt's favorite drug"... And, like many addicts, he's convinced that HIS drug is the best one... (Perhaps we need to start doing "religion tests" on people who do stupid things...) There's another thing that has always puzzled me... Creationists always like to complain that "nobody has ever seen life come from a rock"... And they like to claim that many of the miracles in the Bible had hundreds of witnesses... But... who witnessed God creating the world? And WHO witnessed God creating life? As far as witnesses God was the only one who was even claimed to be there. (Unless there's some missing dash-cam footage out there somewhere...) As far as I can tell that was all just "one of God's big fish stories"... "I created the world in seven days... and that fish was THAT big!"
