Hi Avi. A more simple basic question: Can I have free PowerBI and share a workable dashboard on my webpage for users to interact with (filter, turn things on and off etc.). And can I do it with desktop version or do I need an account, and is that account free for such purpose?

a) free PowerBI and share a workable dashboard on my webpage for users to interact with (filter, turn things on and off etc.) Answer: Yes, you can do that by using "Publish to Web" b) can I do it with desktop version or do I need an account, and is that account free for such purpose Answer: You would need to setup a free account on PowerBI.com and you are all set. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnnMq2CAedh0rc0&index=18 cover publishing to Power BI. It does not show "Publish to Web" but you can find that easily on the web. Just try it! It should work without any problems. NOTE: Publish to Web makes the complete report accessible to anyone on the web. So do not use for sensitive data. ⚡Power On!⚡ / Avi

Good information, but (there's always a but), I was hoping you would talk about how these different version work with SSRS or Power BI Server, and the differences (if any) in licensing based on "on premises" or "Cloud". If I'm hosting my own "On Premises" Power BI Server, why do I have to pay full price for licenses? Aren't the licenses based on my Power BI Desktop instances touching the cloud service that is hosted by Microsoft? Is there a difference in licensing or pricing? Is "On Premises" basically an honor system? Thanks.

Hmm... just tried to share content to a free user from my own organization - this user CAN NOT access shared content with free licence. So it seams that your video has misleading information (that suggests, that Power BI pro is not mandatory to access shared content)

Hello Avi, I really enjoy your videos. Can you clarify something for me, please? If I Have Power BI Pro and I: 1. Publish to the web will Free Desktop users be able to see the report and interact. 2.Publish to the SharePoint will Free Desktop users be able to see the report and interact. In both the above scenarios I do not want the users to be able to change any information (Read-only) Basically, do all users whether only viewing the data or contributing to the report need to have Pro to see the reports? Also, are the only other options to export to excel? The reason I ask is that the reports will be going to individuals that want to just be able to view the report get what they need and act on the findings from the report. they are not interested in making any changes, in fact, I do not want to them to be able to make changes. I only want them to be able to use the functionality that is embedded into the report. Thank you

Hi Avi, thanks a lot for the great video! We are starting to roll out slowly Power BI in our company. I believe Power BI will have a great impact in our company but we want to save some money at the beginning. You talk about using a sharing account. But in our case most of the user are consumer. Do they need a Pro Account? Or it is enough the free account. Some of us need the pro account for the data modeling and the design of the reports, but the other people just need to see the reports! Can they use a free account to see the shared reports that we publish? Thanks a lot in advance and keep the great work! Cheers

hi Avi, Do we need Power BI premium for Embedded reports as well? my 100 PBI reports embedded in an .Net application shared to non power bi users via embed token.
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
You would need to buy one of Power BI Premium Embedded SKUs based on your needs. There are three SKUs (showing pricing as announced, could have changed) Power BI Premium EM1 $625/month Power BI Premium EM2 $1,245/month Power BI Premium EM3 $2,495/month So for Embedded, pricing is lower than the regular Power BI Premium SKUs. Read aka.ms/pbiewhitepaper for more.

Hi Avi, You said, that for embedded- pricing is lower than regular. But the same white paper shows same pricing. Can you please provide more insight?
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Ankit. EM are embedded SKUs and start at $625/month. So the starting point is much cheaper than Power BI Premium, where the starting point now is P1 SKU Not sure why the whitepaper was written this way. Note the fine print in the "Power BI Premium" section...It notes (for EM1, EM2, EM3) ..."2. Only allows consumption through embedded APIs and controls..." EM1/EM2/EM3 cannot really be used for 'Power BI Premium'. When I think Power BI Premium, I am thinking being able to go to PowerBI.com and share my dashboard and report with others. EM1/EM2/EM3 are no good for that. You would need P1 at least.

Thanks, Avi! Great video! Idea about shared pro for POC purposes is a good one! P.S. I have a mixed feelings regarding Power BI - a great tool spoiled with really weird decisions and bad communication :( I mean - removing sharing is cutting off casual explorers (of course, if they 100% know that they want to try out exactly Power BI, instead for looking for just "some good BI tool") and crippling Power BI's user base growth. To me it seems to be really bad decision. And communication... this uncertainty about licensing changes, what happens to the solutions that incorporated power bi embedded (what was encouraged by the power bi materials, like one of main benefits of power bi)... well that also seems to be very bad communication. Ok, I hope from now on power bi will improve in those two fields dramatically

Nice Video. I was using Power BI Pro with Trail Version. I need to use with License. I'm designing the Power BI Report and share the report to CEO. What is the best option for this? How much License should buy? Thank You Avi Singh.
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Krishna, to share reports on PowerBI.com you would need a Pro license for yourself and a Pro License for the person you are sharing with. Another option is to simply share the Power BI Desktop (pbix) file. But then the person needs to have Power BI Desktop installed. My recommendation is not to let licensing become a factor that slows things down. Move as fast as you can in building a full prototype (Connect Data, Create Model+Measures, Create Reports/Dashboard). Once everyone has seen the tool and what it can do, it's much easier to have a conversation about licensing at that time. ♥Power On!♥

@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Ashok, there are two ways to "purchase" Power BI Report Server Option a) You can purchase Power BI Premium. This gives you Power BI Premium capacity in the Cloud + a license to run Power BI Report Server On-Premises Option b) If you have SQL Server Enterprise License with Software Assurance, then that can be used to run Power BI Report Server On-Premises As far as I know, there is no way (right now at least) to just buy Power BI Report Server separately. (Weird? Or just Microsoft? :-) )
@ashokpershad
@ashokpershad 7 жыл бұрын
thanks Avi. What's the Option B?
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Ha! That was hidden "below the fold" (KZbin funkiness, it only showed after someone clicked Read More) Option b) is SQL Server Enterprise License with Software Assurance. If your organization already has that, great! If not, probably not the way to go then - consider Option a) in that case.

Great video. Where does SSRS with Power BI fit into this?
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Ah...a tangled web we weave! Microsoft had release “Technical Preview of Power BI reports in SQL Server Reporting Services" but that is now "Power BI Report Server". If you want to publish Power BI Reports your two options are - Power BI Repot Server (On-Premises) - PowerBI.com (Cloud Service) SSRS still exists and will be around and continue to provide what Microsoft is calling "Paginated Reports". To make things more interesting, Microsoft has what's called "Mobile Reports" which is essentially DataZen (acquired by Microsoft in 2015). Personally, I focus just on 'Power BI', as far as I can tell (and as I've heard around the block at Microsoft) - Power BI will be the 'Center of Gravity' for Microsoft BI for a long time to come. Power On!

Hi Avi, great video. If my organization has an Enterprise SQL Server edition with the Software Assurance package (SLA), can't we deploy the Power BI Report Server and then only the developers will have to purchase the Pro license and we can publish the Power BI/SSRS reports for our internal stakeholders and they can consume it for free. Thoughts?
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Rajan, you have it right. With Enterprise SQL Server + Software Assurance you can use that license to run the Power BI Report Server on your premises. And yup, would only need to buy Pro license for folks who need to publish and "readers" can consume for free without any license.

So this should also apply to "Publish to Web". If i have a team of 10 people making dashboards and visualizations, they need Pro to do their work. They can then publish to Power BI Report Server or a web site. How about Sharepoint Team Sites? Should be the same thing. Basically, if you are just passive consumers of visualizations = no pro license.
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 7 жыл бұрын
Okay 'Publish to Web' makes it PUBLIC, in the sense it can be seen by the Whole Wide World. Anyone with the link can access it. So it may not be what you want. If you're working with public data sets, then I suppose that could work. Else if you have your company data on there - you do not want to use 'Publish to Web'. Well you could...but it would come with a risk. Short of using 'Publish to Web' - the readers also need a Pro License or you need to go the Power BI Premium route p.s. I am kinda surprised when Microsoft said the "Free" version does not allow "Sharing", that's true in general...but it still allows 'Publish to Web'. Kinda odd...since I would say that's sharing too. I think Microsoft has left that door open kinda like the Tableau Public concept.

Yes, it would automatically switch you to Free account. No action would be required on your part. I got a lot of emails and notifications from Microsoft warning me that my Pro license is about to expire. If all your content is in 'My Workspaces' then once it goes back to free account, you would still retain access to all of it. If you used 'App Workspaces' (See kzbin.info/www/bejne/roezYoeIiq2ArbM) then you would not be able to access that once you go back to free ('App Workspaces' are a paid feature).

Lost trust in Microsoft, hate that Power BI backtracked on the ability to share with free users. If Power Bi was upfront with their pricing I would have never switched away from Tableau, but I have a feeling that was part of their marketing strategy.
@PowerBIPro
@PowerBIPro 6 жыл бұрын
Yes Mack, that was a very hard transition. I had clients who were building out large solutions in Power BI with that assumption - that sharing would remain free. When I look at Slack/Dropbox I feel that free sharing is a key part of viral growth. Getting over that though... I've slowly made peace with the new model. If I look at the value Power BI can provide small, medium or large business. I feel it's worth the $10/user. But I realize that it's a hard discussion in many organizations. I usually recommend just starting with Power BI Desktop and evaluating the tool. I feel once you see it in action, it's easier to understand the value it delivers.
