I installed Power Mirror Fold/Unfold motors for my car. The kit was provided by Car Trim Home, so this is a sponsored video.
Here's a link to the product: cartrimhome.co...
I also installed sequential turn signal LED assemblies for the mirrors, and that link is here: cartrimhome.co...
I had some difficulty installing the motors, but it looks like Car Trim Home took my comments and suggestions and I have confirmed through R4Primer that the factory did make all the necessary changes to for the difficulties I encountered, so I think it should fit just fine now!
This video is a bit long but I hope you watch through to the end, and please don't forget to subscribe!

Installation Notes For DIY’ers Thanks Phil for posting. I installed the power folding mirror kit on my 2021 RAV4 Prime XSE and video helped. A few items that may help future DIY’s. 1. CarTrim modified the metal housing for the mirror motor I received. No grinding was required to fit within the mirror assembly. 2. CT modified the wiring harness. The only wiring hardness connection to the vehicle it the one that connects to the OBD. The other data port harness connection shown at 5:55 is not supplied and it is not required anymore. I checked with CT, and field checked, and it works without that connection. The wiring harness has a single brown wire with two silver strips that does not connect to anything. You just coil it up. 3. After much trying, I found it a lot easier to fish the wire through the rubber grommet into the vehicle than vice versa, inside the vehicle through the grommet. Remove the rubber boot from the door, leave the rubber boot connected to the vehicle door frame. Compress the rubber boot and fish the pull wire from that end. Feed the mirror wiring through the same way, i.e. from outside to inside the vehicle. The wiring seemed to get hung up on something trying to feed it the other way. 4. When routing the mirror wiring inside the door panel, be sure to avoid interfering with the roll up windows. Mount the wiring outside the window track. 5. The blue and green wiring connector for the right hand mirror are intended to be crossed. Blue connects to green and green connects to blue. It is not a mistake, it is done so the right mirrors folds inwards and not outwards.

Wow, that's all great info! Thank you for taking the time to give your input! I'm glad to hear the housing has been adjusted by the factory to fit correctly. The mirror wiring - I actually didn't notice the color switch, but the connectors would prevent the wiring from going in backwards, no?
@mlanger2163
@mlanger2163 Жыл бұрын
@@PhilsDIY The wiring connector does snap in but you can connect it in reversed. I thought CT made a mistake by connecting the green wire to blue wire. I tried it both ways and when green connects to green and blue to blue, the mirror would rotate the wrong way. Take away, don't get freaked out if you notice the if the wire color changes at the connector for the right hand mirror.

After all that work you did, I just had to subscribe. :) I have a 21 Rav4 Prime XSE and love it... Mods Done so Far: Fit-Cam Front dash-cam Hood Struts Side mirror sequential blinkers Replaced all door switches with the lighted door switches Center console cover Swapped all rear standard light with LED lights Glove box organizer New Horn (no more wimpy horn) Now sounds like a louder American car horn. LOL People can hear it now. Keep up the good work, I like some of your Mods, I must make them mine. LOL.

Very nice job that’s a lot of work. I’m hoping the company takes your modifications and makes changes to the aluminum casting housings going forward. My only concern is that most aftermarket parts just do not hold up like factory OEM parts.Great video and detail thank you.

Hi John, Thanks for watching and for the comments. Yes, the factory did say they would make the modifications, and sent me pictures. But I can't really tell from them so hopefully they did it right. When I took apart the new motor to cut the bushing shaft, it seemed to be pretty sturdy so let's hope they do hold up. I did keep the original part just in case.

So, lets say you need to fold the mirrors to get into a tight space. Thus you hit the fold mirror button and move into the space and then turn the car off. Then you do your shopping, come back and Open the doors. Will the mirrors open, and potentially hit an obstruction that you had folded the mirrors to avoid. In other words, the question I have is ........ Do the mirrors OBEY the manual closing using the switch, requiring a manual opening via the switch, OR is the system 'dum" and upon the next opening of the doors blindly unfold the mirrors??
@PhilsDIY
@PhilsDIY 10 ай бұрын
Hi there, I actually tried out the scenario you described, and in my car, the mirror fold module does not "remember" that the mirrors were manually folded while the car was running. After parking, turning off and exiting the car, then locking, when I unlock the car, the mirrors unfold. I think this is because the switch is a momentary contact switch, not a push-on push-off switch. So I guess that means it's "dumb." Although I can't imagine the situation where you would have to fold the mirrors in just to park the car - how would you or the passenger get out if it's that tight? I suppose if you park with the passenger side up close against a wall, this could be an issue... Hope this helps! Thanks for watching my video and for your interest!

Sorry, I don't know - I know when I face this type of problem I can usually (about 75% of the time) find the right size screw in my collection of spare screws that I've collected over the years. I think if you take one to Home Depot or any of the hardware stores near you, you could probably find a match. Good luck!

Thanks for making this video. Are you still happy with the folding mirrors? Any issues with the blind spot monitor? I have a Rav4 Prime SE too and I watched a video by Rav4Primer where he seems to be using the same kit you used (His materials link goes to the same Cartrimhome production page as yours) but he doesn't seem to make the modifications you had to make. His video was posted in April, so I'm guessing he got his kit before you got yours. He has a Prime XSE. I had decided not not put in the folding mirrors, but you've got me thinking about it again. : )
@PhilsDIY
@PhilsDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, Actually I got mine back in December - it took me a long time to get it finished, because I was trying to go back and forth with Cartrimhome to see what they would do for the modifications. I think they were able to cut the bushing, make the cords longer, but I don't know about grinding down the metal motor housing, which for me was the biggest headache. The bushing that i had to cut was an obvious but easy to fix problem. The motor housing wasn't so obvious and at first I thought I would just live with the gap, but after a couple months I decided to take it all out and grind them down. I didn't finish the modifications until March, but in April I had a bad hand injury that kept me from finishing the video. Anyway, I haven't had any issues with the blind spot monitors, and the added bonus of the sequential turn signals made the whole project worth the trouble. I'll take a look at Rav4Primer's video. He would have bought his after I gave all the modification specs to Cartrimhome, so it's possible they did make all the mods I suggested.

It was very helpful.. thanks...I am just wondering if your car have digital rear view mirror screen??...I really like to do it would you be interested to do it OEM camera and mirror??
@peterfessier9780
@peterfessier9780 2 жыл бұрын
I ordered a digital rearview mirror from Amazon and I hooked it up by just running the wires through the car to test it. Then when I decided I didn't like it, it was very easy to just pack it up and send it back. It did what it was supposed to do in that I had a much better view of what was going on behind me and I could switch it to a regular mirror when I wanted to. However looking at a video image is different than looking at a mirror image and I found it irritating. You also have with the digital mirror, three different mirrors representing things in three different ways, which I didn't like (since your passenger side mirror already is different from the other two). Maybe if my eyes were younger I'd of been okay, I really don't know. Using it as a regular mirror didn't work well as my original mirror, so I decided it wasn't worth it. Just thought I'd post a reply to suggest that it's not so hard to buy one and test it out since you don't really have to completely install it to see how well it works.

One query... the kit has a button which winds the mirror in/out when the accessory power is on. Doesn't the mirror position toggle on the controller in the door do the same thing in the same power setting? I could understand if the button worked when the accessory line was off as the door control doesn't work then.

@@PhilsDIYOK that makes a bit more sense. I purchased my RAV4 in 2020. In NZ they only offered 4 trims, GX, GLX, Limited or Adventure. To my knowledge, all trims have wind in mirrors as standard but only the Limited has auto mirrors. We still don't have the Prime & release of the BZ4X has been postponed seemingly indefinitely. On the door control there is the arrow disc for mirror positioning & below it, the mirror selector. Above it is a 2-position switch for mirrors in or mirrors out. It doesn't work when accessory power is off. BTW If you're thinking about replacing the switch in your car for one like mine, PROCEED WITH CAUTION! I got stung on this one trying to get a lit version for mine. You can order the part from Amayama but there apparently is a number of variants which all look exactly alike. In my case the replacement lights up but will not wind the windows in or out. I've got this idea of disassembling it and assembling the relevant pieces into my own switch, but this is a dubious operation at best.

Hi Phil. I have had the folding mirror added to my truck for about a month now and have an issue. Have you noticed when the mirrors are folded in, that the driverside mirror, motion sensor will flash continuously. If so, how did you fix it and if not, do you have any suggestions on how to fix it. Thank you.
@PhilsDIY
@PhilsDIY 10 ай бұрын
Hi there, mine does not have that behavior. When I have the car in Drive, fold the mirrors manually while still in drive, the blind spot sensor lights don't flash at all. I would take that mirror apart and double check all the wires in there. The sensor itself I believe is in the rear bumper and the folded mirror would not affect the sensors. I suspect you may have a wire that's being pinched or pulled too much when the mirror gets folded. I know it's a lot of work to disassemble that thing, as I have had to do it around 4 times (as mentioned in my video)! Good luck!

You're right, except the grinding part I didn't record. Just the cutting of the motor bushings. The grinding took awhile, as I was going a little bit at a time. But I'm told the current product has been corrected at the factory so it shouldn't need any grinding now

Did you route the wiring from the driver side across to the passenger side differently from this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHfbopd9Z5qShck ? That's the one part of this install I'm a bit concerned about in terms of difficulty, so trying to figure out if there's an easier way.
@PhilsDIY
@PhilsDIY Жыл бұрын
Basically that's the only way to get the wire across to the passenger side. It's not that hard - you should drop the glove box, and then pull the wire through the center console, then tuck the wire up high above the glove box, and here and there you might also want to wire tie it to other harnesses or fixed places. Once you get the glove box out you'll see it's not that difficult. Have fun!

@@angelodla1767 that's really strange. I think it would be best to contact cartrimhome about this, and describe to them exactly what's going on. As far as i know, this product should have an OBD2 interface, as that's where it gets power from.
