The London Livery Companies evolved from trade associations and guilds formed to regulate and control their respective crafts and businesses. But splendid guildhalls expressing civic pride were not confined to London. All major medieval towns had a guildhall.

My family worked for the Worshipful Company of Drapers in the City of London and I went to a school for girls associated with the Coopers Company. at Bow , so I found this interesting.
