Adam didn't really have time to use the axe since by the time he was on the show parents complained to much about the violence and the only time the Rangers could use there weapons was when they combined them and they barely did that. Adam didn't get a chance to properly use the Axe until once a ranger and I pretty sure the canon thing wasn't a guitar pun since it was in the Sentai and I don't think the pun works in Japanese.

To be Honest, Season 3 of MMPR could have been better. Hydro Hog could have worked for Rito and after the Ninja Quest arc, Hydro Hog freezes Rocky, Aisha, Billy, Kim, Adam and Tommy and the Aquitian Rangers take their place suing the Shogun zords and Battleborgs.
