This is an email from the company to me after highlighting the issues you mentioned in the video. Below from CORE Brands (Furman): Thank you for contacting us in regards to the SS-6B. We have been manufacturing that model for 10 years. The SS-6B holds a UL 1449 safety listing so I ensure you the product is safe and we have a failure rate of 0.01%. In trying to keep the chassis as small as possible we chose that style of receptacle to accomplish a small housing. In regards to the surge protection we are utilizing a fused 400V MOV L-N. That was the component with the white housing. As I mentioned the unit does have the UL 1449 certification but I want to share your video with our compliance engineer as we are always looking at how we can improve our products

Update from Furman: Since UL 1449 is a safety listing for a relocatable power tap. UL will accept tinned stranded wires as they will not be torn and fray effectively causing high current going through a small gauge. This is pretty standard going from a PCB to the duplex. Using a solid wire on a small PCB could cause the solder on the PCB to be compromised. I suppose this information renders the review kind of pointless however I think you're right when it comes to the grounding issue

I'm a musician and sound guy and am shopping for some gear to upgrade my current setup. From the Furman website: "Many surge suppression devices are not equipped to handle these kinds of conditions. Without proper protection, the end result is destroyed equipment, or at best, a destroyed surge suppression system. Furman’s Extreme Voltage Shutdown (EVS) constantly monitors incoming voltage, and once any over-voltage condition over 137 volts AC is detected, *a relay opens which immediately shuts down the unit and all connected equipment.* An indicator light informs the user there is a problem. Once the condition has been corrected, the unit may be reset or auto-reset (depending on model) and will operate normally.

23:05 Safety tip: overloaded circuit boards can "carbonize", which means it burns and leaves a *conductive* path of carbon across the board. If the trace was too thin, you can't assume that it would fail open rather than failing short and causing a fire.

I own the SS6B and while it doesn't claim to be a power conditioner, it always comes up in searches for them. So I called furman and asked if it's one and they said no. I also asked about the emi and rf and they stated it does a bit but at a very low level and to use their full on power conditioners for those needs. I still like the strip because of the sturdiness and black metal housing and long cable. I'm a mobile dj as my living. It's important that things be sturdy and black for blending in.

the Furman on amazon is about 28$, and for that it seems pretty decent price for what they offer. I would take that over the other choices. Not sure why so much hate for that product as it seems better that the other 2 choices. When you look at the board for the furman you only see the back and you guess what it could be doing. The specs for the surge protection are on the furman website and they show Standard spike and surge protection - UL VPR: 400V, UL Nominal. Single Pulse Energy Dissipation, 540 Joules. Which is in line with a cheap surge protection strip. Other advantage i see on the Furman, is that if you are unhappy with the plugs that it uses, you can easily replace them.

Should have reviewed the furman ssb6 pro instead of the regular model, the regular version is inferior to the pro version, the pro model has evs and better harmonic filtering as well as a better internal build, for another 40 to 70 bucks its worth it, either way those furman strips actually will do what they say, if you want to see furman at their best check out the pf 1800ar... even their pfc upses are fantastic quality. Good video other then all of your assumptions, please review that pro version of the Furman strip.

They look like pptc resettable fuses with what looks like a thermal fuse sandwiched between them. Also looking at the silk screen on the board it looks as if it's a custom made thing. PPTC fuses get very hot when they go into a over current situation. If it's too hot then the thermal fuse blows to protect the load and to prevent the PPTCs from potentially damaging the rest of the product? Obviously the fiberglass sleeve thing is to help retain the heat to those components.

Comparing the Furman SS-6B to an ordinary power strip, but comparing it to the Belkin Surge Protector is more of a relevant comparison. However, I certainly prefer the Furman surge protector. I'm most likely choose this one for my hi fi audio system if not a more expensive, and elaborate surge protector, that also has power conditioning. Furman SS-6B unit is built like a tank, and effective.

If you transport the Furman often (touring/gigging Musicians, etc) the power cord will undoubtably become tangled, twisted and unmanageable. I've owned at least 8 of them and no matter how good them were wrapped the cords would become mangled messes. Completely frustrating as I swap them out frequently (not because the outlet box breaks but just for the cords.) I'm looking for a new brand and will not be purchasing this Furman model again.
@georgeanastasopoulos58655 жыл бұрын
Update; no! Not the Furman, S.co.tt! Are you serious, and certain? The Furman's electronic package is not as high quality as the Belkin surge protector? I thought it was the other way around. I am enlightened, but certainly a bit disenchanted.

Advice: Don't make a video about something before you do proper research (you make too many guesses and assumptions here)... a simple call or email to the manufacturer could have cleared up a lot of that (as some have done below in the comments). So overall, not very well done.

Hi thank you very much indeed for this extremely interesting video. Presently i am looking for a power strip suitable for my home stereo system and i am trying to learn something. It seems to me that the Furman has the better sockets while the Belkin the most elaborated electronics ? I have a diy idea ... to buy this two strips and combine the best parts of both in a new one ... maybe using a wooden case for everything. I do not know if it is a smart and safe idea by the way. What would you suggest ? Move to a better strip ? which one ? my main issue is some mains noise that could interfere with audio equipment. I do not need much current as i intend to use the strip mainly for source components and not power amp. Thanks a lot again for the very nice and valuable video. Kind regards, gino

This video was published a few years ago, I realize. That said, a power strip and a surge protector are NOT the same thing, but are in fact VERY different. A power strip is basically an extension cord with multiple outlets. It may or may not have some kind of fuse or breaker. A surge protector stops or shunts to ground excess voltage beyond some level (clamping voltage). A surge protector should also have a joule rating - the maximum current the unit can handle - beyond which it fails. Better surge protectors have some degree of EMI/RFI line noise filtering; however, the filtering on cheaper products is usually insignificant, trivial, just there to get attention, a sales gimmick. If you need or want EMI/RFI filtering, get a better product. What surge protectors do NOT have is voltage regulation. Voltage fluctuates, all the time, it is never constant, or consistent. Get over it, or deal with it. A power conditioner, aka line conditioner, regulates voltage and provides consistent quality power to the connected loads. At a significantly higher price. Then we have the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). SOME UPS models provide decent surge protection. SOME UPS models provide decent filtering of line noise. SOME UPS models provide decent Automatic Voltage Regulation. Do your homework. Cost is an important issue to most of us, but so is safety. DON’T BUY CHEAP!

This sort of quality combined with functionality for a high standard, or an in italics acceptable standard is not the case with most computer hardware. The only certain weak link that certainly follows most is the power supply unit within a desktop computer. You either have to buy a very expensive desktop computer, or purchase another power supply that has higher power capabilities, and also build quality; from over 10 years ago, and from what I've read in at least one computer hardware repair, upgrading book. I opened my PSU up, half-way, thought something was wrong, blew out some dust, put it back together, and connected it into the Sony console again. My point is that in the computer, or computing industry, in this case hardware, is that the electronics, devices, adapters, wires, ports, and connections can be seen, observed for the work that such components perform. Should there be the same observational window? Figuratively, as well as actually speaking? What I can say with enough certainty is that most (in italics) computer hardware is of acceptable quality, functionality, reasonable build, and it plain works well, or at least well enough. As for computer software, including operating systems; that's another story. As a very accomplished, famous comic book editor used to say, enough said.

These power strips are a joke. Look inside and see nothing. Hey, Pangea Octet on sale. Regular $499 on sale for $399! How come no lab tests. No view of the insides. Monoprice has 4 outlet metal box with surge for $ 14.99. Or a Tripp-Lite 10 outlet for $52.67. You have miles of Romex and power company aluminum wire in front of this and you probably have a cheap outlet on the wall. It's just another wire in the system. And the system is only as good as it's weakest link.
