Detroit Muscle undertakes a mission to squeeze everything that they can out of a tired 1986 IROC-Z Camaro, while staying on a strict budget.
The initial condition of the car was poor, with a cracked and rough interior, as well as an underpowered engine. We started with a budget of $10,000, which included purchasing the car and making power upgrades.
The first step was to replace the anemic 305 small block engine with a nitrous huffing 350 bottom end. Then we added go fast goodies and a small nitrous kit, doubling the car's power output.
Next, we focused on the interior, which was filthy and in a state of disrepair. We removed the old seats, dash, carpet, and headliner. Transforming the entire interior for about $1,000.
For the suspension upgrades, we inspected tie rod ends, sway bar links, ball joints, and decided to replace the struts, keeping all within our budget constraint.

3K is a bit expensive. If you live in the rust belt you need to be willing to travel, you will save thousands doing so. If you plan on replacing the driveline, go for a v6 Camaro. You can very easily pick one up for $300. Then put in your preferred driveline.

Cars had more character back then but for the most part they are wayyyyyy better now. New cars seldom break down, they have double, triple and quadruple the power, way better gas mileage, they hardly pollute, they have better, heat, AC, seats, anti rust qualities, safety, comfort, etc. etc.etc. and we are not constantly having to work on them. Some vehicles are lemons but overall there is no comparison. I thought the cars of the day were junk at the time.

Mb Quart mids and tweeters, with an Alpine deck and Alpine 6disc. Started overheating and i couldnt get it to stop. Turns out I was missing the lower valence that directs air to the radiator. It was pretty fast for back in the day. I think the SLP package from Summit took it from 225hp to prob 285hp. Which is laughable these days but at the time it was one of the fastest cars in the area. It can be done. People are slowly getting the picture that the broken down shitbox in their back yard that hasn't seen asphalt nor even been registered in twenty years is not a $20k classic. Those 80's Z-28's were a dime a dozen just like Fox body Mustangs and many others yet I still hear that age old line from sellers that think sentimental value always adds 700% to the price. "This car is a classic" and "all it needs is......." and so forth. The list of those who are willing to spend $10k for a $2k car and then dump another $10k to $15k (or more) to have it restored/restomoded are few and far between and are dwindling by the day. I've built many old cars since the early 80's. More then 100 in all. It's a great hobby if you can find a car/truck that's save able and doesn't cost a fortune just to aquire.

Superior HOW? The Mustang was a giant POS in comparison. The Camaro has a MUCH better chassis, MUCH better suspension, more aerodynamic, and well...SBC for the win. Only the rear on the fox was better than the base Fbody rear. I bought an 89 IROC new, and after I moved to FL got a 91 fox GT. Night and day. I was sooo disappointed. The camaro would cruise at 150mph solid, smooth with no problems. At 125 in the GT the window frames had air sucking noises and it was unstable as hell!

Dang, that was at least 100 HP less than i figured for the parts you added. An L31 Vortec with stock Vortec slightly ported heads and Bee Hive springs etc. and thin felpro 1094 .015" head gaskets to bump compression and improve quench should be close to 10-1 compression add a manifold and a LT1/LT4 Lunati 2008072 roller cam and Morel Lifters a 750 holley and long tubes will get you to 400+ HP NA and no nitrous needed, with AFR heads you should be close to 440 HP. Yeah, but then that poor T5 will grenade the moment you stomp on it. You end up having to do a lot more once you get not far above stock HP & torque with a T5. Then you need to question which rear end is in that particular Camaro. If it came with the 10 bolt, it will be a race between the trany or the rear blowing up first. Which negates the whole $10K budget they had for this car. You will spend a ton of money supporting that 400 HP.

They weren't the best built cars, were they? We had an 86 when it was new. Between the Mustang and Camaro of the day, the Mustang was a better built car. It just wasn't a great looking car, and would get smoked by a 5.7 Camaro.

Canary yellow! I know they have to make commercials for summit racing and others, but I was not impressed with the front seats.... they looked like 160 dollar seats..... I graduated hs in 82, and I think these camaros are the perfect platform to use to make a hot rod with.... modern enough to be able to retrofit alot of go fast/suspension parts etc without breaking the bank...

Wet sanding (when neccessary) and buffing old paint takes quite a bit of practice but it's so worth it.. I always used drill buffing attachments for smaller areas that you cant use a full size buffer, but sometimes you have to do it by hand depending on space available and with non painted trim getting in the way . I've saved a few classics from having to get completely repainted.. even older single stage paint jobs can be brought back to life and have an awesome shine when someone knows how to buff properly! I used to do a whole car for about 150 to 200 dollars.. add another 100 if it was black or a dark tri stage color, because then you need to do a 3 stage buffing process with swirl remover polishing compound. When done right itll have a mirror finish, but when done wrong itll look like a 3D hologram of all the inconsistencies in your sanding scratches.. those with experience know exactly what I'm talking about!

Back in the 70’s my family had a used Corvette-only car lot. My dad would spend 30 minutes on one spot getting the paint looking as good as possible, then as he walked away say okay now make the rest of the car look that good. This was before the base coat clear coat system and all the new paint cleaning and polishing technologies that we have today. I was 13 at the time and wet sanding and buffing a car was the last thing I wanted to be doing, I had kid stuff to do.

It's because they ditch the efi, and added a poorly tuned carb. The efi on these was actually pretty good, and can be built on cheaply & easily. Old guys just can't seem to understand that carb's have their limits.
@geoffw86
@geoffw86 2 ай бұрын
Its not the carb limiting power, it's the cam. LSA of 112º is way off
@williamallen7836
@williamallen7836 2 ай бұрын
@@geoffw86 it's both. Even if they had a better camshaft, efi produces higher power output with lesser fuel used. Dial in your efi, and you will make more power with no other changes. My 1968 F100 was running perfect when I converted to a TBI setup back in 2003. It made more power & made a big improvement in mpg. 6 mpg to 15 mpg. Yeah mpg sucked on those old big blocks. It's time for an engine rebuild, and I will be converting to a mpfi sequential fire. Just to see if I can improve upon it.
@geoffw86
@geoffw86 2 ай бұрын
@williamallen7836 hi, well tuned efi definitely will help with fuel mileage. On the dyno, at full throttle, a well tuned carb or efi makes not much difference in terms of peak power. Love efi myself so don't take me wrong. 112 LSA leaves so much potential power on the table that it makes me wonder what criteria was used in specifying the cam. BTW, not an expert, enthusiastic amateur here 😊
@williamallen7836
@williamallen7836 2 ай бұрын
@@geoffw86 But that's ware people get mislead. Unless you plan on trailering the car & just driving the car at the drag strip, you are not going to be spending much time at WOT at high RPMs all that often. Down in the normal ranges of average driving, and even spirited or aggressive driving, efi will perform much better. LSA is but one aspect of camshaft. All of which can be equally important, and involve a given & take to achieve an end goal. Unfortunately they did not cover their reasoning for going with that camshaft. Their choice of wanting to run a 150 shot of nitrous may have played into it.
