I built one in 1976 using a portable cassette tape recorder as a preamp, into a horn speaker that was in a box where the tube went through up to the mic. But to do a homemade rig right you have to be able to switch between the talk box and your regular amp. That's not hard but I haven't seen any DIY talk box videos that show that. Anyway, mine worked great and I could play through either the TB or regular amp with the press of a 2 way button in a little pedal box. But the easiest thing to do is just buy a factory made one.

Great idea. I love the KU516 as a Leslie treble driver but I had no idea it can serve as a Talkbox as well.

you could use a capacitor on the input tube to filter out the bass frequencies. and if you wanted you could add an output jack and bypass foot switch that way you could use it in a pedalboard.

I have an old, extremely simple amp laying around that I often use to play bass, but I would like to use this talkbox design with an AKAI synth. Could I potentially just hook the amp to my PC (which already has all the AKAI drivers installed), then use the same amp to filter out low frequencies, then hook the output to the horn driver? Maybe that way I can get the synth to play on the horn via the amp, but since I'm an absolute newbie at this, I'm scared of breaking anything, plus I don't know if the connections are even viable this way. Just asking to check if I should commit to this talkbox design before diving in. Great video, by the way: straight to the point and very informative. Thanks!

Thank you :) I think it'll work. So from your PC the signal will go to your amp. Then you turn down the bass on the equalizer and you attach the horn driver to the speaker output. I guess it's a solid state (not Tube) amp? Then there should be no issue in regards of having the right impedance (tube amps require the correct load of e.g. 8Ohm, or 16Ohm). And then you just start with low volume. And you turn it louder. In case you hear the horn driver struggling, then it means there might be too many bass frequencies. But it wouldn't immediately blow up if you raise the volume slowly
@rokaq51632 жыл бұрын
@ Wow, that was a very concise answer, thank you! It's no tube amp, as you suggested, so I might give it a try following the steps you mentioned.

Why can't I find this horn driver for sale in the US???
4 жыл бұрын
The Monacor driver is made in Germany. But I think any horn driver that goes down to about 200 or 300Hz should work quite well
@cooperdavis96634 жыл бұрын
@I might have found one that looks promising, is 180 - 6000 Hz a good range?

What cable did you use to hook up the driver?
Жыл бұрын
Any electrical wires will do. Just don't use super thin ones. There isn't much wattage going to the driver, so I guess even a 0.5mm diameter copper wire should be enough (or a thicker one of course).
@papertheproducer Жыл бұрын
@ what about the other end? rca? or regular guitar RTS?
Жыл бұрын
@@papertheproducer From the power amp used a Speakon to quarter inch cable. The quarter inch plug was plugged into a quarter inch jack. The quarter inch jack has 2 wires soldered to it. These wires were then connected to the driver. This can be seen at 0:29 in the video

Can I use it on an audio interface Instead of an amp?
2 жыл бұрын
The amp is needed to make the signal loud for the speaker (horn driver), the interface only has line level outputs to go into an amp or headphones
