This may be an unpopular opinion, I don’t know the whole story and it’s nice they wanted to adopt another dog, but if you already have one dog at home, you have to take that into consideration. Especially an older dog that doesn’t like other dogs… I mean unless you did multiple meetings with the dog you wanted to adopt and you are sure the two dogs can get along well, you shouldn’t adopt another one and cause stress to the older dog.

I sortof agree with this it can cause stress, but Im wondering that Ares is only reacting naturally because other male dogs could be a threat to him or his things, with him being older ofc (territory, food, females etc) and there is no way to control other people's dogs, especially if other people can't even keep them under control naturally either? Beckman makes a great point at the end I think.
@LyrikalMaestro
@LyrikalMaestro Жыл бұрын
I've heard a lot of things about presa canario's not typically good either but seeing Ares be so composed it leads me to believe for being such a big bulky breed of dog it's likely he's just very resourceful and protective. So it might not be other dogs it could be in a sense something the owners overlooked that is extremely minor. I mean he's very obedient, he takes to corrections very well even with the spry youngins but he could be just wanting to enjoy life for being an old brute lovable puppers alongside the puppy at home with his owners, so essentially maybe correcting the younger one would be a better option(?) It's just a surmise I thought of because I almost hardly believe the problem is Ares. I got surrounded by 5 greyhounds one being super old and the other being a baby baby still where I'll say I'm not terrified of animals but knowing how quick a greyhound whether elderly or youngin snaps from an unknown being is a real stress test as Im 6'3.5" tall which the owner for some reason didn't like how they tested me but I simultaneously gained the trust and respect from her dogs that a couple times the youngin got rocked by his older siblings and grandpa where she couldn't stop them enough but I did the clap and poppy tone to them which terrified me but I did get grounds to their level I wasn't a threat but tolerated no harm to be done which soon as I left I guess she dumped me because they wouldn't stop whining for two days straight. Sorry for the long comment but was a generalized thought that this small misforgotten thought could be in lieu of the younger dog being too sparky for Ares liking or other cases like this. Always wanted to see a presa and this was a joyful experience to see finally such a good humble powerful breed of our fellow companions.

It not only makes you a good trainer but a wonderful dog owner too. So nice to see someone not trying to ‘fix’ a obviously old, getting abit tired beautiful dog who just wants an easy life! Totally agree. I had issues with my third dog and had three trainers. I feel like they just wanted to do their thing with my dog and were not listening to all the things I was saying which I believed were helpful to understanding my dog. I tried several different leash walking techniques, none worked, there was minor improvement but none worked. I Did Beckman’s technique and it was a game changer. Instant success! I spent years on the other techniques and was so miserable. This guy listens to the owners and is focused on understanding the dog.

My first thought is that breed is a force to be reckoned with. Their power is no joke. His age and having only one eye makes him set in his way and not wanting to accept a new dog into the home. People need to take into account what breed of dog, age and temperament your dog has BEFORE bringing another dog into their home. Some older dogs will not accept another dog. The only thing to do is hope the older dog will have a level of tolerance with the new dog. Get the new dog to learn to leave the older dog alone. I had an English Bulldog, Lucy 12 years old when my son moved home with a puppy, Keeshond Teddy. I kept the puppy at a distance for the first few months until the get in your face puppy stage passed. I got them to the point that the bulldog tolerated the keeshond and could each lay 2 feet apart each chewing on their own bone, could eat out of their bowls 2 feet apart and they would play tug of war with a long sock. Lol and go outside to potty together. But the keeshond could never enter the bulldogs "circle of space" which he understood with a few pushes from the bulldog. Sadly my bulldog passed at 14 years (Amazing age) and the Keeshond is now 8 yrs. Sorry this is long but people have to understand some dogs like to be alone. Edit: Lucy was a female and Ted is a male and I think that helped.

@@terridavis9278 you are right about that ! I’m not really one for getting a dog from a breeder (no judgement on anyone who does . I’m just typically a shelter girl). But I DID look into it for a Keeshond and found little more than some sketchy “backyard breeders” with no information (or even photos!) of their litters or the parents , no reviews, nothing. I checked out some Keeshond rescues in California (which I found odd that they even exist out here ) and none of them had any dogs available. Thus, I gave up my search for a Keeshond (as well as a Finnish lapphund which was even more of a lost cause but I already knew that was near impossible ). But that’s ok. I’ve got my Belgian Tervuren/ Shepard mix and she’s a handful all on her own .. as to be expected ! I’m actually wondering if my Terv IS part Keeshond because she has clearly defined “spectacles” and I just recently learned that only 2 breeds in the world have that marking. And that’s the Keeshond and Finnish lapphund. So maybe I DO have one right under my roof and just don’t know it yet;) The DNA kit has been ordered! Can’t wait! But the truth is she could be 2 breeds , 20 breeds or part unicorn and I wouldn’t care. I love her no matter what she is !

She does her avoiding and doesnt start fights just from a dog approaching. Her hearing is going bad, but I can still get her attention and point to either side of the road so she starts sniffing or going closer to my side if shes straying too far Shes turning 13 now in the summer! We had an English mastiff that died at age 7 many years ago; the reality is sometimes these big dogs do not live very long, depending on diet, breed and genetics. I heard someone said about these giant breeds: “two years young dog, two years good dog, two years old dog, then anything after is a miracle.” So technically this fellow here is not a middle age man (as Joel is), but possibly entering his sunset years.

Aries has a telltale tail! Right before he breaks bad, his tail gets stiff and gets a hump in it right near the base. It’s like an advertisement “I’m gonna lose it!…but first I’m going to growl and snarl” I can see why these people love Aries, he’s such a cool guy most of the time. It might help remind him to relax to actually touch/stroke his tail before he fires off. Helping him learn to self sooth before it gets too much might give him another tool toward self control. It’s one thing to discipline undesired behavior, but I believe it can also be helpful to help the dog learn thru repeated reminders to self sooth when faced with situations that require relaxing a bit. It could be compared to a human taking a deep breath and counting to 5 instead punching someone who is causing stress😉 It also sounds like the Great Dane brother also could use some manners training.

Love this. First of all, these people have a huge one eyed Presa and then rescue a Dane. That's a lot of dog in a house!!! Some people would question their sanity! 🤣 Then, they have issues and instead of throwing up their hands and giving the Dane back, they come to you. That is just really, really awesome and I hope they can work things out. Owners like that deserve to have things work out! Once again, I love how you tailor what you do based on the dog, with this guy taking his age into consideration. Would love to know of their progress and I am rooting for them!

I think Aries being forced to interact while his people are right next to the strange dogs, makes him act protective. He doesn’t have a problem with females or the puppy though, in this brief meeting that’s shown. I think he just prefers to be the only dog. To me, it’s kinda the same as expecting your kid to make friends and share their toys when they don’t feel like doing either. Aries might never take to their new great dane and I don’t think he should be constantly corrected and forced. Maybe fostering as a trial might’ve been a wiser plan.

We would all love to see how you approach, and the body language of the dogs as well as personality of the new dog. I so think you should be involved with that process since it is the main focus. Even if you go to their area/house. Any way to actually tackle the goal head on! I about jumped outta my seat with joy when I saw this video. Reason why, that's exactly what I dealt with, with my 6 year old Mastiff/Ridgeback. (Tyson) First I want to say I love this couple, what a great team and I admire that they work so well together to create harmony in their home. I've had many people tell me they think my Tyson is a Presa Canario or a Cane Corso.. I haven't put much effort in confirming that, since these Breeds are outlawed in many areas and labeled dangerous... In my opinion any dog is dangerous in the wrong hands... I'm not going to tell you how to fix this dog, for the same reason I'm here on Beckman's KZbin to learn how to improve Tysons behavior.... But I can share a little bit of my experience. First, I want to mention Tysons eyesight isn't that great, He runs into everything and reacts if startled. He doesn't run around and play with other dogs, he's happy and content watching. When He's around young dogs that want to play and jump on him, he gets annoyed and will yow yow, sharp bark, growl, and on occasion has pinned them down then walks away. Also, if I played with the younger dogs and they were jumping and excited, Tyson would get upset and attempt to school them (he's such a party pooper) lol... He doesn't mind me petting or paying attention to other dogs, but he didn't want them to rough play with me. I also had to change Tyson's eating, since he had gained weight and showed signs of joint discomfort. Also, fat wrinkles that at first glance appeared as ribs but was actually fat rolls... lol.. Once he got to a desired weight, he was more active and not such a grumpy pants.. He doesn't like other dogs invading his sleep area. He will allow young pups to eat out of his bowl but not teen dogs.. Tyson is sweet and kind to WELCOMED guests as I see this dog in this video is the same. He's also well trained in all aspects, other than he doesn't tolerate other dogs jumping on him or other dogs rough playing with humans. He shows dominance when first meeting dogs with puffed chest and raised head, but doesn't bark or bite, but if other dog comes at him aggressively, He will put em down.. He won’t bite to break skin, he mouths them at back of neck and forces them to the ground, once they are grounded and submits, then all is good... I'm not saying I allow this, and because of Tyson's reaction when meeting other out of control dog,, I keep Tyson away from unknown dogs... I've wanted to bring Tyson to Beckman but can't afford it at this time... So, I watch every video and am excited to see how he helps this beautiful dog.... I would be great if Family could bring the Great Dane as well to Beckmans. Sorry for the long message... I'm such a blabber mouth.. lol

Older dogs, like older people have aches and pains. Older people can get tired faster when around older people (etc. my grandparents and the little kids during the holidays). Older dogs can get stressed out from the high energy of younger dogs and just don't want to be messed with. Having separation through baby gates and crates as the pup matures, calms and learns manners, (at 8 to 9 months) can still help in developing a relationship between the two dogs.

The owners were so quick with their corrections in the last part, I didn't even see him do anything yet. Good for them! Still, if he just wants to be left alone, I'd teach the Dane not to bother him. Of course that's not the preferred outcome when you adopt a new dog, but is it fair to Aries to let a new dog constantly invade his space? He didn't get to vote on adopting him.

I brought a 8 week old female pittie into a household with an 11 year old male pit . It took him about three months for him to accept her. But thanks to this guy i never let up and made sure my senior dog knew he did not make the rules. Almost a year in and it’s been a pretty smooth transition.

Don’t worry so much about the negative comments. I love what you do on your channel! I’ve got a 10 week old Pit Shepard mix who is already VERY dominant with my other dogs. Your videos have given me the confidence to let “Grandpa Zeus” my 12 year old pit Shepard mix (coincidence) help with her training. I’m a firm believer in balance. KZbin NEEDS your channel! Thank you!

This poor guy, Aries. He just wants to be left in peace, and not bounced on, by ANYone. Other dogs don't know he's blind on 1 side, so as often as not approach from the blind side, including from behind. If his owners have already adopted another male dog, that can't be undone, so his humans have to figure out a way to accommodate Aries' lifetime learned habits and focus on guiding young dog to be gentle & respectful. Space between them key, IMO.

@@athomehoustonbordercollier2035 interesting, I’ve never adopted a rescue, but I’ve seen write ups on them, and I’ve seen some with stipulations(no cats, small children, single dog home, etc etc). Maybe the Great Dane didn’t have any of these issues so the owners thought there would be no trouble. I can understand the Presa having trouble adjusting to a new pack member. I wonder if they took the Presa to the rescue shelter to meet the Great Dane? Of course, I’m just speculating and hindsight is 20/20.

@@esil5853 usually Danes are jn breed rescue. They should have done a meet and greet first. A rescue these days can come from anywhere a lot of rehoming sections to adoption portals. A meet and greet is always reccomended as a 1st step and if they are a foster your agency if it'd not a city agency or private funded like SPCA should be checking in and hands on. So whose to know 🤷‍♀️

Big boy! I agree. He seems like a dog that just wants to be left alone. He doesn’t want to play so a younger playful dog wouldn’t be a good companion. I’m so glad that an old boy like this isn’t forced to be super social. A great understanding of this dog and a realistic expectation of this boy’s limitations.

Since this dog is protective, I would think it would be beneficial to tell the owners not to let the dog stand in front of them in a blocking stance (which I saw him do a few times). That might help a bit, always showing him that the humans are in front and will take care of things.

I dont really think this would help, although in other situation this might be very helpful. Don't forget that this dog has been like this all its long and almost-at-the-end life. You wont change the guarding, simply coz he doesnt have a time, or mind, or body to learn this technique. He's just too old 😔

Beckman has fantastic dog training skills! I’m committing on another video about leash corrections and training with treats. He does give “some” treats to reinforce good behavior, but he doesn’t feed the dogs treats throughout the entire training session, or constantly say or call the dogs name! He is talking the dog for a walk and expects the dog to pay attention to him…. Not the other way around. I bet his kids are well behaved, too! I think most dog owners are afraid to use a little force to train their pets and children. It’s pretty basic to be the leader,and to be consistent with what’s expected. For me, consistency is the key. My dog knows what I expect of him, if he miss behaves, he gets corrected. If my kids miss behave, they get corrected immediately, with love and understanding. My kids don’t get treats for everything they do right either. They act right because they know it’s what’s expected of them (usually).

Presa and Cane Corso both get slobbery when stressed. The chattering is a warning that the breed will give, which if not heeded will develop into a deep growl. Two of the breeds signs of displeasure. My 150lb CC is 10yrs old now, & I have one that turns 3 on 10/23/22. I don't breed anymore though not since the relocation.
