This has been a technique I learned listening to Dan Huff during his early sessions in CCM, country produced albums. You can hear this technique on some of early Taylor Swift, Faith Hill songs, etc. So when the worship style shifted from Integrity Music oriented to Hillsongs, Paul Baloche era, i have been utilizing this technique way back until now in our church. You can even double it up like a polychord especially if there is only one guitarist on the worship band. I called this myself technique ostinato chording because a certain notes is repeated over and no matter where the chord goes. Any church guitarist should utilize this technique because it create good spacing on the overall chord movements of a song especially on worship. Another good thing of this technique it stabilize the song's tonality. There are many advantages. This is a great content. Less is more.

This is great stuff! Super helpful, but I'm wondering does this still work when the chord progression deviates from the 1, 4, 5, 6? For example, I pulled up my recent worship set, grabbed my guitar and turned on "I Trust in God" by Elevation, and they're throwing in the 2 chord. I skipped to the next song on the list "Holy Spirit" by Bryan and Katie Torwalt, and it's a 1, 2, 4 progression. So again, this technique is great and I definitely see the value for the 90-95% that you mentioned. But does this only work in that 90-95% of the time?
@DontGiveUp-qn8he4 ай бұрын
Great Q! The ii chord is def the next most-used chord used outside of the big 4. In the original edit of this video I covered the ii chord in the 3rd song. But it got cut. There are a few ways you could play the ii chord in each position that would only be a slight shift for each position. Just remember the ii chord is one whole step above your I-chord. So you slide the I-position up one whole step whenever you see the ii-chord. This is one of a few ways to do it. Hope that helps!
@shawnbailey59994 ай бұрын
@@DontGiveUp-qn8he Thanks for the response! Just so I understand, in your video you’re playing the 1 and the 5 except for on the 5 chord where you move the 1 a half step down. But for the 2 chord I would play the 2 and the 5?
@DontGiveUp-qn8he4 ай бұрын
For the ii chord, I would move the whole shape higher - both notes up one whole step. Then you’d be playing the 1st and 5th note of your ii chord.

Coming from a rock background, and starting at church with acoustic guitar, it’s very easy for me to “devolve” into just playing the open chords of a song when I’m on electric. Your tips helped me immensely with not only how to find octaves and 5ths depending on the dynamics of the song, but also the power that these “lame” lead lines have when played in context. I saw you only have 2 vids posted so far - I truly hope that number keeps growing! Thanks for the effort and quality you put into this lesson, we all appreciate it 🙏🏻

This is very helpful. I've used your other videos with the different chord shapes. Used the C/G and F/C this weekend. I'm just wondering if you could make a video of the chord options when using a capo. This power of fifths is very helpful but how do I find these when we're playing Bb? Now I use a capo of fret 3 and play a G shape for the Bb chord. But how would I apply the 5ths with the capo? Or should I? Appreciate all you're doing to provide the best tones.
@DontGiveUp-qn8he6 ай бұрын
The concept is the same when you're using a capo. You just don't have access to the frets behind the capo. It's easy to do this and get twisted around a little because with the capo you'd be playing chord shapes in one key, but trying to use the fifths concept for the chords of the actual key.

Gosh, how many times have I heard someone flailing away on the Guitar, the instrument is out of tune, and the player isn't all that Talented, and they can't sing. but, they are up there. Nice video, however would be nice to hear an advanced improv at the beginning so we can be inspired and also work out if the lesson is for us, thanks.
