Such a powerful song about a country that let him down but that same country is his only identity. Ive been listening to this song since its release and its still powerful.

Props to you for understanding the “bitter irony” of the song 👊🏼 You’d be shocked how many Americans (starting with the Reagan campaign back in 1984 when this song came out) think it’s a straightforward patriotic anthem 😑

The song is about the struggle of veterans returning from the Vietnam War and how America turned away from them and shamed them for being part of the war. Most Vietnam vets are the sons of WWI and WWII veterans wheo were welcomed home as opposed to the Vietnam vets who were shunned by society. Many Vietnam vets came home to no jobs, and drug addiction heightened by the stigma behind the negative politics of the war. The song is meant to highlight how these men went through an attrocity they didn't cause, and were thrown away by the very politicians who drafted them to be there.

The lyrics without the marshall drum beat chorus. Amazing song: Born down in a dead man's town The first kick I took was when I hit the ground You end up like a dog that's been beat too much 'Til you spend half your life just coverin' up Got in a little hometown jam So they put a rifle in my hand Sent me off to a foreign land To go and kill the yellow man Come back home to the refinery Hiring man says, "Son if it was up to me" Went down to see my V.A. man He said, "Son, don't you understand" I had a brother at Khe Sanh Fighting off the Viet Cong They're still there, he's all gone He had a woman he loved in Saigon I got a picture of him in her arms now Down in the shadow of the penitentiary Out by the gas fires of the refinery I'm ten years burning down the road Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go I'm a cool rockin' Daddy in the U.S.A. now

@@jamesbondbond8388 It is an anti Vietnam war song, not necessarily all anti war song. I happened to think it is patriotic, perhaps not in a convential sense, but patriotic never the less. Bruce is sympatizing with the Veterans that returned from Vietnam and were treated badly. Everything he sings about is true, and that is patriotic.

@@hannejeppesen1809 sure but not in the traditional sense that the higher powers painted, making up things like veterans being spit on and that propaganda. He was criticizing how the government sent children to fight in a worthless war and did nothing to take care of them when they came back.

An indictment of the American political machine's willingness to send the poor and the working-class off to war and ignore them upon return. Amazing and depressing that so few get what the song is about. You're the only reactor I've come across who kind of gets it. And I guess that you actually fully get it but didn't want to say so. The song is what it is: brutal and heartbreaking. The title "Born in the USA" is ironic; there's no gift or luck in being a US citizen for the character in the song Springsteen sings for. Which is not to condemn the US, but, rather, is to highlight that we Americans (I'm American) fully share in humanity's ready-and-vast capacity to look away and just not give a shit about systemic injustice visited on those we don't personally know, especially if they're common folk. Media shows a child's body washed up on a beach, and the world cares. But, tens of thousands of men carrying in their minds killing and seeing their brothers-in-arms killed -- and what that did to them; and, then, how an uncaring society that sent them to these experiences reacts to and treats them when they return? No! Don't bring this up; don't be a buzz-kill! Springsteen, whose first drummer was killed in Vietnam, decided to bring it up no matter what anyone thought. And the US public then and now has ignored the meaning of the song. Pure and simple: the song means what it means.
