Ty for the part where you showed the electricity was "out of phase". In my old job, there was stuff with generators and stories of people destroying equipment and endangering themselves because they tried to bring a large generator online when power from the power company was still coming in on the circuit. Nice to see a visual representation of that.

If it were an actual outage situation and you plug an UPS into the wall, you would potentially be energizing the electric lines outside and jeopardizing the safety of the linemen working on the lines. I’m sure the electric utility has a separate disconnect for ElectroBOOM’s house that gets opened first.

One tip for if you want to do this is to turn off the inverter before you plug any double male extension cord into it. Then make sure the room breaker is off (and the main) as well. Plug the cord in any direction you like, then switch the inverter back on LAST. This way you don’t risk electrocuting yourself or burning your hands. You might still burn other things, though if you are not careful about making sure your set up is correctly connected. Also switch off the inverter before unplugging the cord.

@de0509
@de0509 7 жыл бұрын
btw for anyone in a similar situation: My car just ran out too recently. I realize that when the battery is a bit low, but it still makes a "sound" when you try start the car, you have a better chance of making it start if you press the accelerator as you twist the keys. I guess this makes the air less restricted into the engine or something. And then you have an excuse to speed a little to recharge the battery a bit faster
@MrOpenGL
@MrOpenGL 7 жыл бұрын
Car alternators are usually built very cheaply and not designed to recharge a battery from zero (or outputting the maximum current for a few hours continuously). When the engine is at about 1000-1500 RPM usually the excitation current is not regulated when the battery is flat and the alternator outputs less than its maximum current, however if you rev the engine above 1500RPM the speed will be enough that the alternator is fully excited and outputs maximum current, which will make the diodes overheat and possibly fail.
@de0509
@de0509 7 жыл бұрын
Ah thanks. Good info is always welcomed. Never had it happen yet tho. Im a really safe driver. "Fast" to me usually means 80-100kmph
@MrOpenGL
@MrOpenGL 7 жыл бұрын
It's not about speed of the car, it's about the alternator's speed. You could do 160 km/h and have the engine at 1500 RPM and it would be fine. Note that this only applies when the battery has been flattened and the car jump-started. After it's charged again, you can do 5000RPM and it won't hurt the alternator.
@de0509
@de0509 7 жыл бұрын
Ohhh... I see. You mean like the alternator is applied to a vaguely charged battery, so like negligible resistance, similar to applying a ~0 ohm copper wire across a battery? Yeah I get the phenomenon youre describing now

That's 2 diode drops of 1.4V total... So in the example where he is drawing 20 amps from the battery, 28 watts of power (1.4V * 20A) would be wasted. ElectroBoom's MOSFet circuit would only drop around 0.1V for around 2 watts (0.1V * 20A) of wasted power in the protection circuit. It's probably why the manufacturers use the fuse & diode method. Since you need the fuse anyway, adding the fuse blowing diode wastes ZERO power. They just need a better diode that doesn't fail before the fuse blows.

Bad idea!!! Doing this can reduce the life (or damage) of the breaker. It also creates arching damage in the receptical, etc. There are __inumerable__ (free & paid) ways of locating a breaker for an outlet. Ways that are so simple _&_ much safer! For example, connect a loud audio source to the outlet. It should go without saying: The volume of the source audio should be loud enough to hear at the service panel. When you flip the corresponding breaker the sound stops.

Why not use a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER for polarity protection
@gabrielflorit4470

Due to the power loss on the diodes. If you are drawing 50A and your diodes have a voltage drop of 0.7V (like the vast majority of diodes) you will be wasting about 35W in every diode of the bridge. And if you are running from a battery that would be really inefficient
