Super detailed video 🙌, but a couple of points of clarification: 1. You don't have to press the pairing buttons with these things as they work straight away without pairing anyway. The pairing button just gives you an additional layer of encryption for your network traffic, and IMO this is mostly just for marketing purposes since anybody motivated to snoop on your network traffic that also has access to your power lines almost certainly has access to your network too. 2. IMO it makes no sense to pay extra for Cat6 cables with these things since the Cat5 cables that come with them will get you to ~600Mbps, yet you'll never get speeds anywhere near that fast over the power line, so the slowest link will never be the Ethernet cable. I just bought one of these today and they are great! Just moved in with some people and I don't want to be a dick and run a long ethernet cord all the way to my room and I'm not allowed to drill holes or put up a bunch of tacks on the walls, but the Powerline is a great alternative and I highly recommend. My online gaming experience is just as good as having a cord in my opinion...but you know, I would always prefer the cord, naturally haha.

Just bought these the other day, very happy with them. Low ping, no packet loss, 50-70% of my max internet speed with the cat5's. Running them in an old house to different fuses on my breaker and one actually is going through a strip just because of limited outlet access near my gateway. Like you said, absolutely amazed how quick and easy the pairing process was. Just two presses of a button.

Thanks for the video. This was helpful to me deciding how to get internet out to my barn which is about 200 feet from the house. My understanding is they need to be plugged into outlets that are on circuits on the same side of the panel bus (same side of the panel). So as you stated they'll still connect on different circuits but the plugs you said wouldn't communicate might have been on circuits that are on different sides of your electric panel. Maybe not but that's my understanding.

I have heard that some powerline adaptors have built in WiFi functionality also. Not what those people who are trying to prevent radio frequency radiation pollution want. That could explain how you are getting your adaptors to work on separate electrical circuits.

I have several Ethernet over powerline adapters and from different brands. They work together but speeds vary depending on a few variables including combination of location and brand used.

Richard Lloyd I think they all use the same protocols but for different speeds, so to answer clearly, they do all work together because I have Cisco, tp link and netgear all working together. I think I have a fourth brand too but I forgot what it was. I use one of them to connect a second WiFi router that was getting cut off when using WiFi each time we turned on the microwave.

The encryption is automatic on the TP-Link adapters. When they link together the communication between them is encrypted (inside your house wiring). I think I understand what you mean by they all work with each other now. Thanks.

Don't know why I noticed this menial occurrence when I have been fighting for over a week now trying to get my AV600 units to pair.

Finaly i have found answer wich no one explained. In your video there is manual where is said that devices have to be connected on same electrical circuit. If you have three phase power line, two devices must be on same line L1-L1 L2-L2 or L3-L3.

I went to purchase via your provided link but at this point (02/2022) it's a bit dated and the item on Amazon is not available as it has a newer version of the product. Question #1, Will buying the next generation version still support your efforts if started from your link, BUT subsequently chose another link for the newer product? Also, it seems the newer version on the product does not need a router on the remote unit and replicates the settings and ID of the original router [Item: TP-Link Powerline WiFi Extender (TL-WPA7517KIT) - AV1000 Powerline Ethernet Adapter with Dual Band WiFi, OneMesh, Gigabit Port, Ethernet Over Power, Plug & Play] and all this is inconsistent with your excellent instructional video, it (the updated item) seems to greatly simplify the process to get started. Question # 2, for signal strength and reliability, should I only use a PL Kit that requires a second router on the remote unit? Please advise

I have been very pleased with all the TP-Link products I have purchased in the past and continue to use them to this day. There is no issue in using the same SSDI and password on a secondary router or access point if it does not overlap the wifi signal of the primary. My assumption here (and probably TP--Link's assumption) is that you wouldn't need a powerline adapter if you had a good WIFI signal where you are installing the access point. I would purchase the kit from Amazon and see how it works for you. If you like it, keep it. Amazon has an excellent return policy (keep all the packaging) if it does not work for you. Couple of comments. Firstly the results you got with LanBench. Alarm bells sounded twice for me, firstly, the result on the right had around 6.5MB of managed memory, the one on the left just 75KB. The session on the right was the slower one .. hmmm. Later on you were doing a ping test, the ping was slow when LanBridge was running and suddenly was fast once LanBridge was terminated. From this we now know that each session of LanBridge is having a significant impact on LAN performance, at least in terms of latency on the device the session is running on. Given you had both sessions on the screen at the time , the second test to be run was seem likely impacted by the first session. I'll have a wild guess you did cat6 first and cat5e second (another assumption, the cable was 5e not 5 ... i haven't seen cat5 for almost 2 decades). Cat 6 is in MOST circumstances not worth the cost difference and will not demonstrate any speed advantages. If we look at the physical differences, Cat6 has a spacer between the data wires within the shrouding so may offer a few percent difference in electrically noisy environment. Cat6 also MAY have additional screening - ironically most cat 6 cable is terminated with non-shielded plugs or is plugged into non-shielded jacks so any shielding is of debatable benefit. I've used shielded cat6 successfully in a very electrically noisy manufacturing environment with lots of large electric motors causing all kinds of electrical fields. For me, Cat6 was a solution to a problem that didn't exist. Great, it theoretically supports a (faster) transfer speed of around IIRC 2200Mb over around 90 metres ... Network cards come in 100,1000 and 10GE so cat6 can't support the 10Gig transfer rates and much cheaper cat5e supports the 1Gig rate anyway. Cat6 MAY support 10GE over (much) shorter lengths but there no guarantees in the specifications that it will do so. Cat6a on the other hand is appropriate but lacks the power saving abilities of cat 7 and in a big data centre, those watts all have to be cooled so can prove important. In other words for the home, cat5e is fine. If you're running a server farm then cat7 / fibre, especially given the power saving of cat7 vs cat6a, however cat7 is a right sod to route/bend so you will see cat6a in the data centre.

Connecting the Ethernet cable to your computer will connect you to the network it should have little effect on your TV or Xbox. The more data one source uses the more it affects the ability of all the other sources to get data as your Internet connection can only dole out so much data. Great video! I like the high amount of technical detail. I know nothing about internet connection, routers and so on. I connected NAS yesterday, the first time in my life, so will be considering upgrading my network. So far I am happy with M5 Deco. Although NAS works on it, I prefer to do some wired connection between the main "router place" on the ground floor and the PC in my room. I will research if it is possible to find AV1000/2000 in Japan and maybe buy it. As I live in a narrow tall house, the ethernet connection is somehow impossible for me right now. The wiring is 15 y.o., hopefully, cheap Japanese sparkies know their craft ;) As your English is very clean, I can easily listen and 1.5x. Good luck and thank you ;)

I installed and connected with tp-link mini router TL-WR810N but the strenghth is very weak under 5 mbps. My internet speed on my laptop is 116.9mbps I also have Apple TV box connected to my TV and works fine. If I purchase and install TPLink AV 1000 connect it with ethernet cable, will I get a strong internet connection.

I can not guarantee performance as there are so many factors in the line quality of your electrical system. I can say they will either connect or not. I my case though not all plugs worked most did and none that connected were lower than 100 Mbps. If you need 2 plugs, get the AV2000. As a bonus, you get a pass through power on both ends. The only real difference I found in research was that the AV2000 is basically 2x gigabit (AV1000) ports combined (hence AV2000 name). I researched and found that most wall power on "older homes", and I really don't know what classifies an older home other than a newer home is less then 10 years old most likely won't be able to support full gigabit speeds (you can get close but not 100%). That said, I got the AV2000 because I wanted the pass through power AND the 2nd port. I plan to have unit A connect to the cable modem under my TV and unit B connect to router/switch/WiFi I plan to move to my office/new network box I am building. I plan to have 1 Ethernet on unit B go into the WiFi and 1 Ethernet go into the switch if speeds allow. Otherwise I will just connect the switch into WiFi and WiFi into the AV2000 and leave 1 Ethernet free on unit B for something. If I remember to update after my testing, I will.

Try every plug you have out there. But if it does not solve the problem for you I would suggest running a CAT6 outdoor rated Ethernet cable to the barn instead here's some examples at Amazon(paid): amzn.to/3SEXiz0 That will give you the most reliable connection. To increase speeds on any Homeplug Powerline, putting toroidal differential filters on your laptop and computer etc supplies (with the Homeplug on the mains side of that) will make a significant difference. I tried simple ferrites with the mains cable passed though a few turns, but these operate higher than the lowest Homeplug frequencies. Winding a toroid as a differential filter effectively isolates all the suppression capacitors and noise in your computer from the homeplug. I've got older AV600 TP-Link units and the best I could get from one end of my house to the other was 10Mbps. Putting a toroid at one end, where my main computer, digital amp, Pie, monitor, router etc are got 30Mbps. Adding another at the remote end (less kit there) got me another 10 and it's running at 40Mbps now. Complete mains filters include a class X capacitor across the mains and this effectively kills Homeplug. A simple differential toroidal choke doesn't, it just isolates one side from the other at higher frequencies. If I connect one Homeplug one side of the toroid and another on the other side, they can hardly 'see' each other. So I know it works at the frequencies we want. Not seen anything like this on the web, except that passthrough type Homeplugs may contain a filter similar to mine. I have no information to support if that is true. If it is, then those are the versions to go for. The Ham radio guys hate Homeplug as it is broad frequency from one or two MHz up to tens of Mhz and emitted throughout the wiring of your house (a big antenna!). It also upsets DSL telephone line based broadband.

Hi Richard, Great video. My concern is that will these work if the outlet at my router is not on the same exact circuit in the panel at the outlet that I need near my Roku. You said that this worked except for a few outlets in your home? My other concern is does this increase my electric bill? I have read reviews on similar products that said this happened. I believe these units power down when not in use and maybe similar units do not. Thanks for posting this detailed video, these are the exact units I was considering buying.

My main concern with internet over power would be packet error rate. Especially if the power line runs near an appliance. 200mbps is great but I suspect actual throughput is a bit slower.

Even at 100 Mbps regardless of the advertising, I would say that is good. I did not have any packet loss on any of the plugs but I did have variance in speed between different plugs. Quick question. Does the adapter that would be connected to the router have to be directly connected, or could it be plugged into a wall Ethernet jack? in my case there is an Ethernet jack across the hall from the room that i need wired internet in and i was wondering if it would be faster to plug it in there or by the router. If speed is what you require connecting directly to the router will give you the fastest performance over the power line adapters. the Max I get out of these things is 200mbps up and download, that is highly because the routers in the next room and the house is new so it has modern good wiring, I wouldn't recommend this for gigabit speeds over a local lan but for internet its great.

You are most welcome. Yes you can connect a WIFI router to the other end. I am going to make a video on how to do what you are asking about in the near future. Take a look at this video where I show how to connect two routers using a LAN cable: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGLXg4qLq9iEaZY and instead of using a LAN cable between the two connect the primary router to the power line adapter and the secondary to the other connected power line adapter. Richard Lloyd Hi Richard, fantastic! I have just ordered a starters kit to try some different options. I did order the latest Devolo MAGIC 2, because of the different options they offer (WiFi and ethernet, and the possibility to use them within the same system) and the claimed theoretic LAN speed of 2400Mbit/sec and range (up to 500mtrs LAN). When the real LAN speed is still higher than my internet provider can offer, that is good for me. I have 3 WiFi routers, and want to set up 3 different WiFi networks on 3 different floors (1 for work, 1 for home, 1 for the car). Using the electric home wires as LAN cable is great for this. Hi Richard, short update. Installed my Powerline kit today. To be honest, I am a bit disappointed about the speed. Speed is nowhere near 50% of the theoretical speed of 2400Mbps. Perhaps the problem is that one of the Powerline adapters is not connected in a grounded outlet. Also have to check which outlets are within the same electrical group, that may give some improvements in the powerline network speed. I have done some speedtests, powerline network speed is 56Mbps, my WiFi network is 250+Mbps. So there is some room for improvement😉 Kind regards, Faizel

I see TP Link now offers a TP-Link AV2000 Powerline Adapter - 2 Gigabit Ports, Ethernet Over Power, Plug&Play, Power Saving, 2x2 MIMO, Noise Filtering, Extra Power Socket for other Devices, Ideal for Gaming (TL-PA9020P KIT). It runs around $88. Is this giving me more speed or something or is it overkill. I don't know how to measure the speed of my router and etc so I can't tell you what the speed is. Ethernet should only be run up to 100 meters. So if the claims on the packaging are correct that actually gives you the ability to go further than ethernet would.

NOTE: The big part of making sure that different outlets will work together with the Powerline adapters is if it's on the same Phase, not the panel. Some homes take in 2, or even all 3 phases, and this won't work if the reciprocals are on different phases.

It varies but I think the performance was very good. As I have stated in the past my number one preference would be to run a CAT6 cable to connect any two network nodes but that is not always a feasible solution. These adapters are good alternative. Richard Lloyd i am planning to purchase the av1000 or av1300 for my living room. The connection is to supply my networking to tv, soundbar, android box, apple tv and box by my isp provider. Currently my internet supply is 300 mbps/50 mbps but i cant get a maximum signal from my 5ghz (ac88u) as my living rooom located at the ground floor while my router is on 1st floor. is av1000 is enough for my setup? or should i go for av1300 for maximum usage? tq

I just purchased this powerline adapter and plugged one into my bedroom wall and used the provided CAT.5e cable (I guess the newer versions provide a 5e cable now?) and connected it to my Arris Surfboard SBG10 modem/router combo. I plugged the other adapter into another outlet on the same electrical circuit and paired the two adapters. Do I have to connect the second adapter into a laptop, in order for it to work properly? Hi I just bought one of these and am having issues with them. They pair up fine but the connectivity is flakey. Unfortunate all of our powerpoints are about 2-3inched off the ground so you can’t plug the extenders directly into the wall. So I had to use a power board. The instructions say don’t do this but I have no other choice. I’m wondering if this is why I am having issues

I am not sure what you mean as far as a "power board" I am going to assume that it is a power bar or power strip. Many of these are surge suppressors and have internal electronics to protect whatever is connected to them and that interferes with these devices, hence why they say don't use them. Try a straight extension cord, the shorter the better and see what happens then. They are just straight through cables and may work for you. Thank you for watching and commenting. If you are in the U.S.A. or Canada, another option is to purchase a rotating duplex outlet from 360electrical. I had a similar issue where the bottom wall outlet is less than an inch from the floor. Installed the rotating duplex outlet and have no issues. One thing to remember is to turn off the circuit breaker before installing so you don't get a few dozen volts of electricity going through you.
