Hey Everyone! Busy ,busy again! 3rd weekend storm in a row 😟. We were supposed to get 40+ cm and 100k gusts, but so far it hasn't been too bad. I imagine tomorrow will be a busy day as the storm is supposed to continue until noon tomorrow... So I probably won't get much editing done this weekend. In the mean time, this is what I'm up to right now! Literally 10 minutes ago, lol I have a partner today and he's driving so I figured I share this quick video while we head to the next job site 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Keep up the great work and we appreciate what you do. I went out in LOTS of blizzards to do no heat furnace repair calls when I was in the HVAC biz so I feel for you. I wonder what is the worst Winter job? For me it would have to be the guys who fix broken water main lines in Winnipeg in -40C weather with a 30 mph wind. We have lots of freeze and thaw problems and city water lines breaking due to age. They have to stand in water. Being a firefighter in Winter must also be very difficult.

Almost always rode single in my work truck. Ridding with a helper is handy but it doesn't take long to get on each other's nerves after a long day. Sometimes you need a break, even from the nice guys... and even if it's only the 20 minute drive to the next job. BTW, we dodged the bullet on this storm in southwest Ct. The bulk of the snow and wind blew 50 miles more to the east and hammered the coast and up toward Boston. We'll still have -20 wind chill all night, but I will be in a warm bed for a change.

It is noticeable that you have a completely different type of electricity network in Canada. Here in Sweden, we have all the cable buried in the ground and then we have central transformer stations that spread "low voltage" to an entire residential area. Very interesting to see the comparisons.
@ronblack7870
@ronblack7870 3 жыл бұрын
it depends on the area. if it's rural/ semi rural the cost of burying is high compared to revenue. in busy cities it tends to get buried sometimes on main streets .

Hey, Bobsdecline, I live right by the water in Connecticut. The last storm we had a week or two ago was all rain with 80K/hr winds. We had a power pole with 3 phases with no cutouts or transformers light up the sky at 5AM we lost power for 2 seconds during the arc flash and came back on. At 6AM two bucket trucks were up there for 30 minutes and left the area but were parked nearby. At 7:00AM there were two arc flashes from the same pole seconds apart and dropped all three phases to the ground the nest pole down. Again no equipment on the pole where the wires came down. The next pole down looks like a reclosure that serves the waste water treatment plant. My guess is is the porcelin ties on top of the pole cracked over time and with the salt water and the rain and wind gave way. When they closed the reclosure at 7:AM that is when things got ugly. Took an hour to put all primarys back up with those splicey things. Joe.

Aaron, You guys must have got the nor’easter that blew through here. Cape Cod got clobbered! Not bad in Connecticut. That word you were looking for was “where the magic blue smoke came from”. Only lineman would know about magic blue smoke though. I can’t imagine the cold temperatures you got up there with all that snow? Some places received 2 feet of snow in Connecticut with white out conditions. My hard hat is off to you guys! 👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻 You have some nice equipment up there. Tandem axle material handlers with Posi Plus booms. They look like the old Holan booms we used to get. They were by far the best! That looks like a 2 man bucket too? I’m guessing an extended cab as well? 6 wheel drive or 10 wheel drive? Onspot chains? Over center booms? You need all the advantage you can get! Lots of your pole line is off the road.
@Bobsdecline
@Bobsdecline 3 жыл бұрын
Hey John! All of the above, except for "on spots". I would love to have them tho for my little truck! The tandems are quite the truck tho, I guess it would be 8 wheel. They're calling for another storm the weekend coming again! There's been some some nasty driving conditions for sure!
@johnclyne6350
@johnclyne6350 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bobsdecline The front axle is not a drive axle? Still a brute thou? We had one like that years ago. It was a digger. Unbelievable traction. The old call trucks used to have “on spots”. The company I work for took away the truck committee. Half lineman & half garage mechanics to come up with the best suited truck & accessories. You know the rest of the story…..the same guy that buys the pencils buys the trucks. No more on spots. Just so you know the “on spots” only work if your going forward. If you try to back up? They are not there to help you. I saw pictures of an oil truck that backed up with “on spots”. The driver lost the truck in a ditch & they couldn’t winch it out. They had to pump the oil out of it first & not sure what happened to the truck? Bad day for that driver. I don’t care what they say about apprentices? They are eager to work & won’t stop at anything. They give the tired hands a break from going up all the time. Keep posting those videos! Your loyal subscriber. 👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻

How often do you have easy access to the problem like that vs having to blaze your own trail thru the down trees and unclear roads to reach the area? We had much of my area out for nearly a week in early January and I understand a big part of it was just the crews had to cut their own path to open roads to reach anything. Our IT guy had to get a ride from a tractor to get to a main road to be picked up by a lifted 4x4 truck to get in to handle a building-wide systems outage

Almost every job in this weather! Our department of transportation and city plows are awesome for helping out though. Even last night we had a call - had to go down an access road to patrol a main 3 phase line. While we can always get our own plows (contracted) the community was quick to clear the way for us to help reduce restoration time. Everyone n a while customers will also clear a path through their yard for us!

Hey Bobsdecline, I’m in North Texas. An ice storm hit and the power was out before i ever made it home from work. I took the next day off, and have been sitting here without power now for almost 24 hours. Iv’e been seeing trucks from out of state (Alabama Power) and owner (oncor) driving up and down the road all day (rural county road) but not one has stopped to fix anything. The center top wire is broken down the street. Why does the power company provide an estimate on power restoration on their website for an area, when once that time passes they put the status as “unknown”? This area has the largest number of affected customers, but somehow we are apparently not at the top of the list. I just love messaging on KZbin in the dark, while it’s cold.
@Bobsdecline
@Bobsdecline 3 жыл бұрын
Lol messaging in the dark while cold is definitely a good time 🎉😬. The initial website estimates are based on trend. They're basically an educated guess. Often times a large area can be down, while perhaps a mainline that feeds that area may be down as well. Crew may arrive and see the damage and report back an estimated time only to discover additional damage that may not be as obvious... An example could be a pole broke at ground level swaying in the wind. During the changeout process they discover a gas main buried directly beside the pole. With a million possibilities, a series of events such as this could easily change an estimated time restoration multiple times and extend it by several hours or even days. If a job gets too big, sometimes it may be abandoned all together as the time can be spent more efficiently at restoring another area with less work involved. If that's the case, arrangements are made behind the scenes to prepare crews and equipment for the more complex job. During large outages or storms work is also focused in areas that restore hospitals, gas, grocery etc.. and not necessarily on the amount of customers affected. The main priorities are active fires or public safety issues

I had a big event the other night. A car took out 2 of 3 poles. I was hearing arcing so I looked out the window. A phase was down but it ever kicked out because it was on a cattle fence burning up the post. I called to report it ad I told them who I work for ad job title because I can see people out by the fires. By the time I got my coat on they killed the lines. My training is I stay back until the line people show up and make sure it is dead so I was telling others to stay back. Eight hours and 6 trucks later 2 new poles and new high line.

Nice! I worked with crew from Hydro QC for two weeks straight a few years back. Great guys. They even had a few mechanic trucks follow their fleet. The posi have treated us pretty good. I found they were a. It slow at first compared to the altec, but much smoother. My first truck, when relieving the position before things were official was a versalift that worked very well. Then came the Terex... Which was nice, but the lower boom bottomed out too high. I have a brand new versalift now and it's crazy fast but the lower boom isn't at all like the old one. If I'm far from the pole, I might not even be able to go down far enough to reach telephone. I definitely like the speed of it tho for the service truck

what an asshole that person hopefully lost his job or is about to for doing such a stupid rap like that with electrical tape and on top of what you said wound too tight around that cable no wonder why it failed but people are so much in a hurry that they're not paying attention to their job and guess what more service calls more power outages because of stupidity from employees not doing their job and cutting corners so it's not your fault Aaron it's others that are working alongside of you or people before your time that decided to cut corners at a big risk to the public that could've been worse if it would've flashed over and it could've caused a chain reaction that happened to me once and that was not at the good at all it was a very bad day for the electric company I can tell you that they had to re-tri plex everything for a mile and a half that's how badly damaged the whole line got
