Epic, raw footage that "tells" it like it is. No distracting product-promo hype, no frilly babble by commentators..Just a graphic record of daring surfers showing their adrenalin-fired respect before the roaring savagery and awesome beauty of the ocean. .......And a BIG thumbs up to the surf-rescue guys. Thank you POWERLINES. You've distilled the pure essence of Mavericks.

Great video. Can't help to flashback about 30 years to when it was just Jeff Clark, Peter Mel, Doc Renneker, pre jetski, drone, often unfilmed, before the helicopters, survival suit, crowds... I saw the Wormhout brothers out - the first guys to tow. Then came Flea, Jay Moriarty (live like Jay), the Moose, Don Curry... then when Mark Foo came over with Bradshaw to catch his last wave. "High Noon at Low Tide" and other early Powerlines films... I never surfed Mavs then, but remember meeting Jeff Clark on the cliff in the very early days (around '93) when it was just him in his flannel. I brought my 7'0" and he was curious as to what I was doing. It was the first time I ever checked it . But he was super nice. Long live the memory of those "outsiders" days, where the incipient mavericks personas were charging it when it was still a quiet and obscure place (save for the sound of detonating waves).

Frightening repetitive dream: I'm somewhere in Dana Point on a tall cliff overlooking beautiful giant shore breakers, just perfect waves! I'm thrilled and ready to catch me some. I'm in the water and a huge set maybe 100' is rolling towards me and I realize I don't know how to surf. You ever have these dreams? Terrifying!
@HeartsofSound4 жыл бұрын
My favorite is the dream where I'm out surfing 20' er's or so and having a blast. Then I spot >100' waves like a row of high rise apartment buildings on the outside already breaking in deep water heading my way and there's no possibility of catching them or avoiding them. Then just as I'm certain that I'm going to die I'm suddenly up on the beach watching them roll in and marveling that they don't swamp the entire beach. Unsure how I managed to get to shore I wake up.

@condor78104 жыл бұрын
Jeff Clark started surfing there in 1975 long before the advent of tow-in surfing in the mid or late 90's. Mavericks got noticed on the "world" map around 1990 when the first photo of the big surf there made it into Surfer Magazine. That was before tow-in surfing was a big deal.

@@condor7810 This from an LA Times Article. www.latimes.com/style/la-os-2tow-story.html "And so the word was out, soon reaching Surfer magazine, whose editors were floored--and a little embarrassed--that they had no clue of Maverick’s existence right here in California. “How do you think we felt when we found out?” Steve Hawk, the magazine’s editor, said sheepishly. Hawk said the magazine broke the story in January, 1992--running a photograph on the cover of a huge Maverick’s wave, headlined: “Cold Sweat.” “It shocked the surfing world,” Hawk said."
