I've been using a 14.2 amp XBox supply for 10 years, powering a 3 channel 600W amplifier with 8 speakers, plus a 12 inch subwoofer. You can run it near full volume without clipping. It takes all 14.2 amps. At a volume level where you feel like it's too loud, it will cut off, but the whole house is shaking by that point. It certainly doesn't need more power, but I want more power. I was shocked to hear how much volume you can get from just 14.2 amps. The voltage is 12.30 volt, but drops to 11.90 volts before it will clip and shut down. The capacitor in the XBox power supplies is tiny, so you need a very large buffer capacitor (I don't have a buffer capacitor unfortunately). I do want more volume, and more power (duh!) so thanks for this video! I wasn't sure where to look.

Hello and thanks for watching, I have heard of people using the Xbox power supply. Before my Powermax setup I had a computer 5amp power supply that barely powered amplifiers. Going through that made me want a decent 12v power supply and purchased the Powermax. Till this day I haven’t had a problem and have powered a 1000 watt amplifier with it, so I’m happy to say the least. I was previously using a repurposed computer PSU as well. Despite it saying 650 watts it didnt do the job very well. It was good for checking that an amp I just bought powered up and wasnt in protect mode but thats about it. Some amps wouldnt come out of protect because it could tell the wires were too small of a gauge (MTX amps). I came across these Powermax supplies and ended up buying the PM3-75LK. The 75 amp version of the one you have here. It is capable of up to 1095 watts continuously so that will be more than sufficient to test pretty much anything I need to. I made a little setup with some 4 gauge going into a distribution block that had multiple outputs so I can hook up the amp, headunit etc. Setup works great and the price i got it for was amazing because they had made a mistake, thats why I bought the 75A, it was priced at $119 and the 100A was $279. The 75A should have been about $219-239 but i ended up getting it for less than the cost of the 30A model.

I believe either option is a good decision, I have never had an issue with not having enough power for an amplifier. But I will say I have learned that running a power supply directly into an amplifier can cause an issue, some amplifiers don’t like to be plugged directly into a power supply. I recommend using a battery or a high power capacitor in-line of any 12v power supply. If you watch more of my videos you notice I eventually ended up running a small battery to make all amplifiers run as they should. That's the beauty of DC. Your battery will stop charging when it's complete. However, lead acid battery life will be shorted doing this, as they do not like max amps past 80% charge. If you want to use this as a full-time battery charger, you will not want to use fixed voltage, as there is no float charge mode either. With extended time at max, volts are unsuitable for batteries; their float charges are always less than the bulk charge. .
