I've been watching this show since the 90's and think now would be a good time to build at least one boosted import engine a year and possibly have a dueling engine series. It's all the same formula [More air + more fuel = more power. Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow.] I know you shy away due to lack of aftermarket support but these boosted engines don't need aftermarket blocks, cranks, heads, intake manifolds, etc. to make big power numbers.

Weird to mention "grassroots" racing at the start of this. This engine build costs around $10,000 in parts alone and a lot more in machining services for that block work. Most likely a builder would charge $16-25k to build an engine like this. Considering most endurance racing teams racing grassroots series like ChampCar, Lucky Dog, and 24 hours of lemons are spending $3-4k per race at the most, the engine cost is more than most "grassroots" racers' budgets for the entire year. For most grassroots applications, just a refresh of a 302 block with a stock mustang gt cam and quality OEM grade internals will make enough power to have reliable fun on track for a few weekends work and under $2k in parts. For the pro drivers like Tommy Byrne competing in the higher dollar series like AER or WRL, then by all means plan for the larger investment of a pro built race engine.
