sledsrme Just some basic chemistry & knowledge: Lean burn will be the cleanest, but we know it damages engine components. Incomplete combustion (running rich) saves engine components, but wastes fuel & generates soot & larger amount of Carbon, CO2 & NOx. Diesels are cleaner in a sense less CO2 is generated & diesels are inherently more efficient, but left untreated diesels spit out much more NOx than any gasoline engine. Hence AdBlue after-treatment systems.
