Great vid as usually Bill. I run fully synthetic Rotella (blue bottle) and have never had an issue with my 2016 F-250 6.7 (~40k miles). I started using Rotella in my '01 7.3 and never had a problem. PS my 7.3 was stolen, otherwise i would still be driving it.

Here's my theory..- he drained the oil, replaced oil filter, cleaned up and drove down to the store to get a 6 pack, then he realized he'd forgot to put the new oil in when the oil pressure light wouldn't go off. Drove back home and put the new oil in it. Now he's to embarrassed to admit it.
@ga8766
@ga8766 5 жыл бұрын
I agree he got distracted somehow and it’s an expensive 6 pack now. It happens to us all my biggest fear is filling up the truck with gas because my company truck is a gas engine and my Ford is diesel which is only driven on the weekend.

I sure hope not. Diesel injectors use oil pressure to function. It would have been one pain in the ass trying to keep the engine running. Maybe he put one gallon in and ran the thing to the store to get the other three gallons...

I really appreciate this video. Thanks. When I bought my used 6.4 from a dealer they offered an extended warranty. Normally I'd never buy one but I figured there could be some hidden $9000 problem. So I bought the warranty for $800 and I got a 6 month, 6000 miles power train warranty. I figured if there was a major problem it would show up within that period of time. So far no problems. Also had the EGR and DPF deleted ASAP. Also I change my own oil and I'd don't see why that would be an issue unless you are a complete moron. In that case you have no business owning a diesel or any kind of vehicle.

Howdy Bill, I have a 2006 F350 Super Duty FX4 King Ranch with a 6.0L Diesel 230k miles. I bought your Arch Oil system added it to my oil when i changed it (16 qts of oil according to the Powerstoke manual in the glove box). Before the oil change the MPG thing in the dash was 13.5ish. The bottle of fuel treatment is about half empty now & the fuel mileage is 13.5ish still. The fuel treatment bottle instructions are for 1 oz. to 1 Gal. The truck is driven a even mix of highway at 65-75 and in town.

A fault would activate for low engine oil pressure and signal a check light on the dash. Normally this will happen after a minute of running so this type of wear is not likely if shut off and filled with oil. Now I would personally pull the engine data set file and check the engine oil pressure section for engine life span ran with low engine oil and rpms the engine e has seen and run for, that will give you insight on just how long the engine has ran with low oil pressure and if it is owner fault. If no signs of abnormal run periods at low pressure I would look towards a bad oil pick up tube(cracked, seal or o-ring failure) causing the pump to suck air.

I see one or two possibilities here, either he did not put enough oil in it after the oil change, ran it and upon hearing noises checked the level to find none none on the dipstick so filled, or he installed the oil filter wrong either by not removing old O ring, or not tightening it up to allow it to prime. Once bearings spin, doesn’t matter how much lubrication you have, as they aren’t getting fed oil anymore so will fail.

Yeah as turbo is part of your priority oil circuit. The oil pump sends oil to the oil filter, then it goes priority to the turbo and also off to the rest of the engine. Turbo spins over 100000rpm so a bearing failure, shaft damage is easy to happen in a short period of time being starved for oil. Definitely would need to be checked for shaft play and or exchanged

Whenever I do an oil change on any diesel, I let the thing drain for 30 minutes or more before I put the plug back in. Makes sure all the oil is out from the heads and anywhere else. Some cases there could be 1 to 2 quarts in the head(s).

You never know what happens sometimes. Some customers think if they lie about what led to the problem that it will lessen the damages an costs of repair. I've seen this before many times. Many years ago a fellow bought a very clean used gmc 7000 flatbed with an 8.2 Detroit in it. ( The engine should tell you how long ago that was) anyway he never owned a diesel before and wanted to start out right with an oil change and lube. Well when I got it it was knocking to beat the band. Couldn't find any reason for it either. Full of oil ( looking and smelling a little off) new filters and what have you. Finally reached out to the customer for more details. I asked about brand and kind of oil along with weight. He told me he used Kendall diesel II. I told him I never heard of it and I'd like to see an emty container or something. He went back to his shop and brought me an emty Dextron -2 jug. Well that explains it. Told him his fate and asked him if he seen it was red? He said never owned a diesel before but knew it took special oil and thought that was just the way it looked. I felt bad for the guy, he spent more fixing it than it cost or was worth
@tiko4337
@tiko4337 5 жыл бұрын
Yep thinking either he cranked it with out or did not put enough in it and drove it. When you mention prime .... are you referring to just filling the filter up before spinning it on ? Or do you crank up before starting some now? Love your videos. I just got a 2016 250 and the first thing I did is change oil and fuel filters. My first diesel. I been changing my own oil for over 30 years in every vehicle I have owned. For some reason this truck has me nervous has hell I guess because they are so dam expensive to fix.

Towed to ford, spun #3 and #6 and two main. I did some research. It seems to be a problem with late 11 and early 12 with plastic oil pans. Ford would not tell me the cause. I wonder if he put kerosene or some solvent in prior to draining the oil in an attempt to clean up the inside of the engine. Pre filling oil filters has to be done correctly or it is a great way to introduce foreign particles in to your oil pump. You have to fill the filter through the small holes with the big hole plugged. That way the contamination if present will be caught up by the filter media.
@alexcurry9273
@alexcurry9273 5 жыл бұрын
Why even prefill a filter, constant high oil pressure at start up fills that filter quickly plus the residual oil is enough for lubrication. People over complicate everything.

My 2002 7.3 has a problem starting after it sits for a day or so. The longer it sits the harder it is to start. However, once it starts, when it is cut off, it will start right up as if nothing is wrong even after sitting for about 12 hours. However, after 24 hours of sitting, it is hard to start again. One mechanic said it was a bad oil pump so he replaced it but after a day or so, it went back to not wanting to crank after sitting. It actually seems as if the fuel is leaking back down from the motor into the tank. Is that possible? Any suggestions??

What we've seen is the *tangless* second main spin slightly in it's bore, starving itself and rods 2 and 6 of oil (passage gets blocked when bearing slightly rotates). You'll pretty much always see a bunch of healthy looking components otherwise. The closest thing to acknowledging the issue we've seen from ford is that at some point (i forget the year) the motor mount brackets got updated (remember all those long blocks coming with new brackets that "MUST" be installed?) We theorize that because of the mount bracket's vicinity to that number 2 main area on the block that it may have been an attempt to prevent possible block distortion... but again, just a theory. What we do know, is it's overwhelmingly the 2nd main and 2-6 rods. BTW, the '17 and up motors are not immune to this either, nor are the replacement blocks with new brackets. Had a replacement long block with 7K on it do the same thing. It would seem that what all the old fashioned people thought would happen with tangless bearings, is happening. But i'm no engineer, just a greasy mechanic. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

At least it wont starve if you forgot to put oil cause it will not even start due to oil driving the injectors. No oil, no injectors, no start. 7.3 are bombproof

A oil Change video would be great. Please include Startup and checking oil pressure gauge next to the speedo and how long to build pressure. It would be fun to see you guys assemble a engine out of junk (scrap man) parts and run then drain and run. I bet it would run for quite a while at idle and off idle. Why do engine computers not shut the engine off?

I've had semi motor lock up with a similar situation, we bought the semi and then changed the oil in the first week having the truck (unknown miles on the oil) we changed the oil and instantly started hearing a knocking sound, but we needed it to run a load so we sent it on the road anyways. Needless to say about 150 miles down the road it had locked up. The only thing we could come up with that caused this problem to happen is that the old oil was loaded with lucus to make the engine sound like it was running great when we bought it. I'm thinking a similar situation may of happend here

One of 2 things happened here, either the guy got distracted and forgot to put oil in it before he started it up. Which would explain the lack of damage to the oil pump id think. Or the previous owner jacked it up, put a bunch of additives in to quiet it down, and when this guy changed the oil it blew up. There is no way that simply draining the old oil, replacing the filter and filling it back up could cause this.

Seems like you could tell if it was run low on oil when you drained it. Unless he put more in after it got noisy.

Did you ask him if he happened to find 12 or 13 quarts of oil, fresh and in the jugs that he can't explain? I had a nephew that had a tire fall off on the highway. Wheel studs were all there and good. He swore he put his lug nuts on after the brake job....... Until he got home and found them on his tool box.
