In a recent update, Indian Railways has announced a major change in its train services to Kashmir. From January 26, 2025, passengers visiting Srinagar will have to change trains at Katra station, located in Jammu. So, no direct connectivity! The decision was taken due security concerns. However, the news has left locals, business owners, and politicians disappointed, as they were hopeful for a seamless connection between New Delhi and Srinagar. Why not run long train to Kashmir and just change train with security check at Katra so that travellers can travel with single ticket. This avoids unnecessary confusion at Katra - waiting for next available train to Srinagar and adds more certainty to the travellers.

You could have direct train from Delhi without halt till Katra and then it follows the route to Srinagar. I am not convinced with this reason. I believe the main reason is the trader lobby in Jammu who will face losses if there is a direct train to Srinagar bypassing Jammu. Could also be the airline lobby.

Apart from security reasons, weather is the second reason. Those trains will be equipped with heaters to keep the temperature down to body temperature of the pasengers. When we go Srinagar by road, every vehicle is checked routinely by disembarking all the passengers - whether it is car, cab or bus.

All news reports say it is because of fear of militant attacks only, not climate. If it was due to climate, they could easily run direct trains during summer. In Pakistan even ordinary trains run between Balochistan (which snows in winter) and the rest of the country. Check out the Pakistan Railway videos of trains running in Quetta during winter when it snows along the route.

@@akshaydeshpande0902 It is essentially a defeat for India that even after having invested so much money and effort into building this line with the lofty aim of "integrating" Kashmir with the rest of the country, we still don't dare to run a direct train due to a fear of militant attack. And why is the Govt still worried about militant attacks despite Operation All Out, surgical strike, Balakot strike and abrogation of Article 370? What more will it take to root out militancy? In any case, many travellers intending to go to Kashmir by rail with their families will be put off by this hassle of having to get down at Katra and having to wait in queue for security checks and then board another train with their luggage. It simply makes more sense to catch a flight. And what about ordinary trains and freight trains? Would they run direct freight trains or do the goods have to go through the difficult road route as before? Who knows.. The whole arrangement is a big disappointment if you ask me. It threw a bucket of cold water on all the "Train to Kashmir" and "Kashmir to Kanyakumari" hype they built up till now.

Apart from security, most people are not aware, the next big problem of not having direct connection train at current times is the extreme cold weather, new specialised trains with heating has been manufactured for this purpose, to run on this route, if these trains run from Mumbai or Delhi where the weather is not that cold doesn't utilise the facilities well.

There is more pressure from Kashmir transport union than security to prevent direct trains from rest of the country. As of now road network is the main transport option for going Jammu/Katra to Srinagar directly. Either people or goods. Both cases it creates livelihood of thousands of tranporters. This direct train service would have reduced 30% of people transport and 20% of goods transport in single year. Imagine the train service marketed as bringing prosperity affecting so many people's current earning. Still it will eventually happen once slowly people starts shifting to train services.

Problem is not whether wrong type of people enter JK but rather, no extremist from JK should be able to sneak into mainland . Nor should contraband be able to get in from JK into mainland. Best option is to give a single ticket from Delhi to Srinagar with a physical changeover at Katra.
